OK, so I swear I am not a conspiracy theorist. 9/11 was not an inside job, and JFK was killed by Harvey Lee Oswald.
But something strange is going on with the Rays announced attendance this season, and I'm wondering if anyone else is noticing it, and whether this could be researched somehow.
I'm a season ticket holder. I've been going to games at the Trop for years. I realize the capacity this year was reduced, especially in the corner upper deck sections.
And yet... Something smells fishy to me. Tonight's game against St. Louis was a perfect example!
I was at tonight's game against St. Louis. The announced attendance of 23,897 means that approximately 1 in 3 seats in the stadium went empty. Not only did visually I didn't get this impression at all (I'd say no more than 20-25% was empty, putting attendance closer to 26-29,000), but the lines at the ticket windows today were as long as long can be.
The announced attendance continues a pattern of numbers that have surprised me all year long. Time and again, using the experience of parking, the lines in concession, and the physical appearance of the place, I've estimated 4,000-5,000 more fans in the games than the Rays have announced. The Red Sox series, for example, had two games with announced attendance at or right below 20,000. I certainly felt the stadium was fuller those two nights.
So, does anyone else see what I'm seeing? Are our beloved Rays fudging the attendance numbers?!
