Desmond Jennings Promoted, Reid Brignac Optioned To Triple-A
From Marc Topkin, St. Pete Times:
#Rays Jennings called up, Brignac optioned to durham
It's about time that Desmond Jennings got promoted to play left field -- apparently he'll start there tomorrow -- but the move to demote Brignac is a bit of a shocker. Many people were speculating that B.J. Upton was involved in a trade, considering that he was pulled from the game for no apparent reason, which forced the Rays to lose the DH and play Damon in left field. Odd? Certainly. And isn't it weird that the Rays now have five outfielders on their roster: Jennings, Joyce, Upton, Fuld, and Ruggiano? Something feels off here.
Topkin got a quote from Upton stating that he hadn't been traded and nobody within the industry has heard anything about an Upton deal, which seems to squash those rumors. But still....something just doesn't feel right. Brignac has struggled mightily this season and deserves a demotion based on his pitiful offense (.207 wOBA), but this leaves Elliot Johnson and Sean Rodriguez to split the duties at shortstop. It's certainly a very odd roster right now.
I'm thinking it's either one of two things: Upton did get traded and the shoe just hadn't dropped yet, or else Friedman decided to demote Brignac because he didn't want to send Fuld or Ruggiano through waivers. Once Upton is dealt, they'd both be fine outfield depth, so it seems the Rays may have to carry an imbalanced roster for a couple of days in order to keep them both around.
Either way, it points to the Rays dealing Upton sometime soon, so the writing is on the walls. The Desmond Jennings Era in Tampa Bay has officially begun.

5 OF sounds like a lot, but than add Zobrist and Damon who both play the OF
we actually have 7 guys who can play OF right now and only 5 guys on the IF, this makes absolutely no sense unless it is connected to another move. Not too mention if they wanted to give Reid some time in AAA to work on things and/or call up Jennings and let him play LF they could have done either a couple months ago.
FWIW the Nationals are playing out west tonight and are in the 7th inning
let see what happens when they finish up tonight.
Ya I agree
After there game is up

As long as he isn't the center piece of the deal I'm okay with it
but BJ Upton/Ian Desmond is looking more and more like it makes sense.
Welcome, finally to the team Jennings
With that being said, I don’t get a few things. Upton was not hurt, there wasn’t a lack of hustle so maybe pull him because the game is over? Ok, makes sense, why remove the DH instead of simply putting Ruggs in LF?
Well right now we have 2 SS who can’t hit, a 6 man bullpen and 6 guys who can play the OF not counting Damon.
Under construction
This is very strange

Upton may already be in a bunch of potential deals...
Maybe they just pulled him because the game was over and it’s just protecting themselves for a future move.

I know I'm being irrational but I think we will get screwed on a BJ trade
I know Friedmans track record but I just love BJ. He’s so underrated and will only get better.
I just hope we keep Shields. Flip Jeff or Wade for a good 1B spect.
I thank Draysbay for proving that Loose Change fanatics exist in mainstream America, and more importantly for Chik-fil-A spicy chicken recommendations. My life is forever changed

I don't think we will get "screwed" but I definately think we will look back on it and probably lose
unless the prospect turns out great. BJ seems to be getting his power back and if he can go to a better hitters park and get on base more, I can definitely see him being a 25 HR 50 SB guy
Only way we get screwed is if you're still buying the BJ potential v the facts

Is Danny Espinosa considered untouchable?
because I would rather the Rays go after him than Desmond. He has hit for good power so far this season and plays good D at 2B. Could he play SS?
No matter how much they are hyped, my teams always find a way to disappoint.

many in Nats org believe Espinosa can play SS
but it would take a lot more than Upton to pry Espinosa away.
by raysfaninminnesota on Jul 23, 2011 12:29 AM EDT up reply actions
Found this when looking at Desmond
Espinosa is unlikely to be dealt, but Desmond is another story. His .580 OPS is the worst in the NL and some within the organization would like to trade him, move Espinosa to short, and promote Triple-A second baseman Steve Lombardozzi.
Looks like they believe he can move to short

Who are potential fits for Upton?
Braves (Looking for a RH bat)
Nationals (Long rumored)
Brewers (Gomez out w/ collarbone injury?)
well of those 3, I would probably remove the Brewers
Not only is the farm system empty but Morgan is having a great year for them, would they really want Upton just for lefties?
Under construction
also Philly
Does Milawakee even have anyone good in their system to trade?

Those philly phans would not stand for BJ's caught lookings for very long.
But perhaps the change of scenery, and a different batting coach would help with that.

I agree that he has to know something is up even if nobody is telling him anything. I hope he goes to Washington, his hometown team, and turns out to be a superstar and he is given a chance by the fans to succeed….let me rephrase that….given a chance by the local media and talking heads to succeed. I guess it turns out maybe it was a bit lucky if he gets moved but I was at one of the Yankee games with my wife and she wanted a Upton shirt but they were all sold out.
Maybe the royals traded for him haha

now lets make this quick damnit, anyone know any of the Nats twitter bloggers.
Just curious for people who know how minors work
How many more years until Hak or even Beckham could get called up? 2-3? or more?
with the rays about 6-8 years.
Sarcasm of course.

Our FO always takes their time but it also depends on how they perform
If Beckham plays great next season, I say Sept 2012 for Beckham. Sometime in 2013 for Lee
Under construction
it depends on who they bring in with these trades assuming no clear compition blocking them at the ML level
I think Beckham 2013 and Lee 2014. I think Lee will end up playing CF but I am on an island of 1 with that one.
ok cool thanks for responses
still trying to figure out how minors work
I am also in the market for a new webcam.
