Rays Lose 13-4, Trade Entire 25-Man Roster
The original manifestation of this recap comes from SBN Tampa Bay, that Website.
James Shields could not buy an out. Shields (L, 9-9) cruised pretty easily through the first inning, got saved on an excellent Sam Fuld throw to home in the second inning, got tagged for a run in the third, and then lost a football game in the fourth.
James Shields' fourth inning went like this: Walk. Single. Sac bunt. Triple. Walk. Single. Fly out. Homer. Double. Single. Homer. Strike out.
It was a murderous inning. All told, the Oakland A's had a 10 to 0 score and an easily-predicted win by the top of the fifth.
This, of course, does not mean James Shields has gone completely kaput, that his season is ruined, or that his strong first half was an illusion. Indeed, his strong first half had been partially a product of good luck, so hopefully Shields has balanced all that luck out in one go 'round, rather than being unlucky in several games over the final stretch.
See, Shields has a BABIP this (.259) a good many points under his career numbers (.302) and a LOB% (80.3%) in a similarly lucky fashion (72.3% career). So maybe tonight's .526 BABIP and 35.7% LOB will be enough to sate the Luck Beasts for the rest of the season, and we can thereby forget about this outing.
Meanwhile, as the Rays watched their ace melt into puddle of despair, the A's starter Trevor Cahill (W, 9-9) whatever'd his way to a win, pitching 7 and 1/3 of scoreless, non-explosive, boring, efficient baseball.
Notables from the game:
- Desmond Jennings, playing center field for the first time this season, made a nice sliding grab on a line drive late in the game. He did, however, look a little iffy going back on balls hit deep -- iffy at least when compared to deep ball master-thief, B.J. Upton.
- Rather than do something exciting like ask Sam Fuld to pitch, Rays manager Joe Maddon elected to have recently recalled Rob Delaney and Brandon Gomes pitch the final four frames. Delaney went three innings and allowed as many runs; Gomes pitched a quiet eighth.
- In the bottom of the ninth inning (i.e. Thursday in the Eastern Time Zone), with nearly half starting Rays player pulled or moved around, the Rays scored four runs, two of which came on an impressive home run from Matt Joyce, who worked a 1-2 count full and then blasted a dinger into right.
- Oh yeah, Robinson Chirinos played some first tonight and had some Kotchmanesque ground ball singles. #veteranpresents

I have no fantasy of the postseason but there are a few things I want
I want to see our big 3(Cobb is pushing for a big 4) do well. All 3 have lost so far in this series. I want to see the young guys look good, Jennings continues to look solid but Gomes…I dunno, McGee hasn’t pitched enough for my liking and Chirinos is hitting for the same average our C’s have all season.
I’m gonna be surprised if Upton is on the roster by tomorrows game and a intriquing spect from a team that would be interested, Starling Marte was pulled after 1 AB today, he was not injured and the Pirates are interested.
Trade Upton, Farnsworth, Shoppach, Damon, Kotchman, Peralta and see what we can get.
Basically keep Price, Shields, Hellickson, McGee, Gomes, Longoria, Joyce, Jennings, Chirinos (I believe), Zobrist and my surprise that I want to keep, Sean Rodriguez. The rest, see what we can, so many bad players, try to start a lot of this over, this 2nd half is shaping up for a Devil Rays type of play.
Under construction
I still want to keep Farnsworth
he is still under contract for next year.
No matter how much they are hyped, my teams always find a way to disappoint.

Trades & Find out what's wrong with Longo
I too want to keep Farnsworth…and for sure Damon…and are you nuts…Kotchman is definitely a keeper.
I really think the swoon they are in starts with Longoria…I’ve said it before, there is something wrong with him. Something in his life/mind or whatever. He needs to get himself right. Somehow someone needs to get into his life and find out. If not, trade him. I like Sean at third anyways.
Let’s hope they get this swoon ended, and soon.

But like I said, he’s so young and its his first year of pro ball, I just don’t care.
If we’re talking about this next year then sure, I’ll express some concern. There’s just too many variables for me to get worried. How’s he handling being away from home for the first time? What are the coaches having him work on? Did he/they change his approach when he got to camp? ect. ect. ect.
Furthermore, what % of those K’s are Swinging? What’s his O-Swing look like? Contact rate? It he whiffing the fastball? Breaking balls giving him fits?
There’s just too much going on in that first year for me to put much stock in any of the stats. Regardless of how outlandish they are.

If you said that "two weeks ago" I probably did take the Vin approach.
He’s played in 28 games on the year. “2 weeks ago” he’d played in 15ish. 28 is a relatively SSS, and 15 is half that..
some examples
Andres Galarraga – 7 BB and 55 K’s in 202 PA at 19 in the rookie league in 1980
Ron Kittle – 19 BB and 55 K’s in 177 PA at 19 in the rookie league in 1977
Russell Branyan – 27 BB and 120 K’s in 310 PA at 19 in 1995 in Sally Lg

Kittle is the closest, but O’Conner is worse then them all
Seriously
55 in 202 is like 27%, that’s fine. 55 in 177 is 31%, that’s still 9% less than O’Conner currently.

The Rays are having stability issues
just like they had at the start of the season. Rumors of B.J and Big Game being traded. Damon and Kotch having no contracts for next year. Once these issues settle and the air is cleared they will get back to baseball.
GO RAYS
I've said this before and I'll say it again
2013 is the year the Rays need to look at to make a run at the division. This is why I would trade shields now and get a young ML ready 1B/DH/C and some more good prospects. Nobody should have a problem w/ a rotation of Price, Hellickson, Moore, Cobb, and Niemann/Davis/Torres/Archer. Keeping Shields just doesn’t make sense for this team IMO. Again, an Upton trade needs to bring us back a C or some type of good offensive player. I believe someone mentioned this earlier, but the Rays just need to trade Upton, Farnsworth, Peralta, Kotch, Damon, and I’m going to say Shields. Their season is done and the players are playing like they know that. 2013 is the year we should all look at for the Rays to make another run if we get the right pieces in place (i.e. C, 1B, SS, LF, DH, and bullpen)
Non Mollare, non mai mollare!
ItaliaNole A.K.A. SavvysNole
Replacing half the team
with what. The Rays are building a team based on pitching and strong defense. They have money constaints to work under. They don’t have to wait on 2013. Nobody can predict that far into the future. They will continue to play for wins, this year and next year.
They may compete in a different division next year and might even be in a different league.Out goes your new DH theory.
Go Rays
They will not be in the NL
An NL will most likely be coming to the AL so that there are an even 15 teams per league (currently 16 in NL, 14 in AL).
That's a lot of question marks.
The problem with all these trade James Shields for _______________ (insert top 1B/C prospect) scenarios is that the Rays would be placing a lot of faith in players (acquired player + replacement SP) that haven’t proven anything at the major league level. Take a look at any of the BA Top 100 lists from the past ten years. How many of these top C / 1B became successful MLB players with two years?
The proposed 2013 rotation, which would be the teams strength, features one player that has reached success at the major league level. That’s a big gamble. Look at what happened to Davis/Niemann/McGee who were all top flight arms. Davis and Niemann are being sent to the pasture by fans and McGee is fighting for a bullpen spot.
The Rays have pieces in place for a successful 2012 team that could have a chance at the playoffs if they get lucky. They’ve established positions of need, and should have enough cash available to fill those holes. Trading Upton and letting Damon walk will free up a nice chunk. Keep Shields, keep Farnsworth, try to get Kotchman at a favorable rate (though don’t pay for his 2011 production) and take a shot at a few players that flamed out in the past and try to build for a run in 2012 and 2013.
Easier said than done, takes two to tango, etc...
Pick your cliche, there just isn’t much in the way of sure-fire bats, especially with power, in the minors right now. I wish we had made a run at Lucas Duda in the offseason. I’d much rather have him and Justin Turner than just about anybody in Durham right now

2013 is the year the Rays need to look at to make a run at the division.
Agree somewhat but with no one showing up at the Trop and watching less on the tube, AF needs to think short term(the rest of this season) and strongly about 2012. While maybe trading popular names in Upton, Damon, Shields are positive moves in the right direction, he runs the risk of losing even more fan support for the remainder of this season and into next. And while attendance is already down and being out of the race is going to hurt anyway he cannot throw the towel in all the way and I think it is a concern that weighs in his decisions.
Having said that though, he should be able to make some moves(mainly by moving Upton) and some fringe players that are not going to be part of the future,Kotchman, Peralta, Farnsworth, Neimann, Davis, some prospects(Torres, Beckham, Archer….) in packages that may bring ML ready guys back who can begin the process of revitalizing the team and the fans…now. He can keep Shields(unless blown away) and add pieces of need that may bring enthusiasm back to the team, their performance on the field and to a becoming a a more disinterested fan base with each passing loss. Players that can play right away and maybe begin turning things around not only for the rest of 2011 but giving the team a jump start on 2012. And that could be the start of a long consistent run for the next several seasons.
We know AF has the smarts to pull it off. The question is whether he has the where with all(call it guts or balls), maybe lessens his stance with some GM’s, and can take advantage and the opportunities that seem to be in place right now.
If they don't show up after 2/3 ALE titles and a World Series trip
when are they going to show?
Gotta do what’s best for the team and not worry about the attendance at this point.
Twitter: @mbleazy
when are they going to show?
That’s what AF and the FO needs to answer. And that is aside from the stadium issue, which needs to be addressed too. They may have the opportunity now to re-tool the team with young, under control new talent(to go along with those here that have years left) so the fans know the names on the back of the uniform will be the same on the front for those same years.
I think the have the resources to do that now by adding talented players at needed positions and begin the process.
PS: The rotation
Outside of Cobb and Neimann, they have all looked blahhh. And those should be our front 4 guys, maybe an extra day of rest is exactly what they don’t want, especially Shields and Price
Under construction
Don't know if the Rays need another Jennings/Guyer type prospect for their OF now.
I go positional needs first during this time.
Make Price the closer
… until he can find a second pitch he can count on. That solves the rotation for now. Field offers for Farnsworth, Peralta. Keep one to set up.
