Wade Davis Is Masterful, Rays' Offense Handed Win On Silver Platter

ST. PETERSBURG, FL - AUGUST 24: Infielder Ben Zobrist #18 of the Tampa Bay Rays celebrates after scoring the winning run in the tenth inning against the Detroit Tigers at Tropicana Field on August 24, 2011 in St. Petersburg, Florida. (Photo by J. Meric/Getty Images)

It wasn't necessarily pretty or easy, but the Rays won. Like a blooper to short that gets caught, it's a line drive in the record books. And hey, after the first two games in this series, I'm willing to take any sort of win, no matter how ugly.

When I say that last night's game was "ugly", I'm only really referring to the Rays' offense. The Rays managed to get 15 baserunners through 10 innings, but they could only scrape across three runs the entire game. The first of those runs came off Evan Longoria's 22nd home run of the season, and the second was the result of two consecutive walks and then Johnny Damon doubled to center field. That was almost enough to win the game, but the Tigers found enough offense to tie the game and force it into extras.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, the Rays loaded the bases off a single, hit-by-pitch, and walk, and then Elliot Johnson stepped to the plate. Johnson did about what you'd expect -- weak ground ball to third base -- but then fate decided to smile upon the Rays. Brandon Inge inexplicably decided to try for the force out at second base, even when he could have easily nabbed Johnson at first, Zobrist at home, or Kotchman at third. Instead, he threw to second base, and Sean Rodriguez -- who had been hustling the entire time -- slid in just before the throw reached. Game, set, match.

Inge_medium

(h/t Collette for the image)

Seriously, awesome job by Rodriguez to be hustling that hard on the play. But wow, it's still somewhat sad the Rays have reached the point where it takes this much for them to score with the bases loaded.

But anyway, enough of the depressing offense: Wade Davis was spectacular today, which is always a phrase I'm more than happy to write. He threw arguably his best start of the season, lasting a full nine innings and only allowing seven baserunners (four hits, three walks). While he did allow a home run and a handful of runs, he had his pitches working like none other. He was locating his fastballs and blowing them by hitters at 95+ MPH, and he generated 9% swinging strikes overall on the evening. He was getting batters to swing and miss on his curveball and slider, making him look like an entirely different pitcher than he was earlier in the year.

I must admit, I was skeptical that an injury was the real reason Davis stunk earlier this year. Or at least, I was skeptical it was something that could be fixed with something as simple as a trip to the DL. His velocity was way down and all his secondary pitches looked like crap, so it looked to me like it would take a considerable amount of time for him to work through all his issues and pull himself together. But I'm sure as heck glad that I was wrong.

I think there's no such thing.

What he means is too passive an approach (which is interesting to debate), not too fine a batting eye.

be still my heart:
I asked Beckham after the game—a digression about him follows, you’ve been warned—if he was looking for the breaking ball. No, he said he seldom sits on an offspeed pitch. He was actually expecting a fastball, but adjusted to Atkins’s poorly thrown deuce and nailed it. Two innings later, Beckham smacked a first-pitch fastball from Atkins for a hard line-out to third base. Reports from the lower minors on Beckham’s plate approach were middling, but so far in Durham he looks like a hitter with skills and the canniness to use them. Best of all, he hits line drives. Even his homers travel low to the ground.

The only thing to keep an eye on, as far as I can tell, is actually a good tendency of Beckham’s that has, at its outer extreme, a downside: His batting eye can be at times a little too fine. A couple of times, including last night, I’ve seen him take pitches right on or near the outside corner that were called strikes, to his displeasure. Russ Canzler sometimes does it, too. But this is really a minor quibble. In fact it’s a good habit to see in a 21-year-old, one you don’t want to see him break.

Beckham is fun to watch in the field, too. He often gives a little leap/hop before the pitcher winds up, in order to stay on his toes. He’ll sometimes follow that with a little roll of the shoulders. He’s lean and athletic and coordinated, and he’s got energy to burn—the kind of player you want to nickname “Jitterbug” or “Zipper.” He charges soft grounders with great quickness.

Beckham is quick in every way. In the top of the ninth, he tried to convert a 4-6-3 double play. Second baseman Ray Olmedo had fielded Hudson’s broken-bat grounder and made a good throw to Beckham at second base, but the ball was hit rather slowly and the lead runner, Carlos Rojas, was bearing down on Beckham. Trying to unload the relay throw in a jiffy, Beckham whipped it a little too sidearm, and the ball tailed way off and into the Bulls’ dugout, advancing the speedy Hudson, who had the throw beaten anyway, to second base. (He didn’t score.)

Beckham’s quickness of body may come from quickness of character, too. I asked him if he thought the Bulls were maybe a little tired, perhaps suffering the delayed hangover of a 10-day road trip from Buffalo to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to Norfolk to home. “Tired?!” he shot back, incredulously, as if only a total lazybones could possibly think such a thing. No way. You win some, you lose some, he explained, and there’s another game tomorrow. To repeat: Tim Beckham is still only 21. Tired? Who’s tired?

My last question was about his ninth-inning throwing error, and Beckham’s eyes, well, quickened. He was taken aback, perhaps, just a little, for just a second, as though dwelling on the negative was a pointless and frankly annoying thing to be asked to do. Yes, he quickly agreed—mainly to dismiss the line of questioning, I perceived—the throw was too sidearm; and then he was ready to move onto the next thing, which happened to be the shower. I bet he was in and out in two minutes.

Davis

I was at the game and it looked like from my vantage point, admittedly behind the plate so I may not have had the right angle, that Avila’s homer was still on a pretty good pitch. The velocity was a little down on that one – 92 – but the more I see of Avila the more I’m impressed with that guy. Have to echo the comment of someone else the other day “how can we get one of those?” Overall, Davis was outstanding last night. It’s interesting though about his approach this year. Someone must have told him to cut down a little on velocity for better command because when he wants to amp it up later in the game he clearly can rush it up there at 95 or 96

Does Evan get to 30 this year? He's locked in right now and only needs 8 more the rest of the way. I think he falls short but gives it a good run

Dude’s going to end up with a pretty typical year minus a month despite struggling with injuries and ineffectiveness for most of it.

Yeah, BABIP seems depressed a bit, but love seeing the BB:K numbers being better than ever and having more power than we've seen since his rookie year when he was just up there hacking

His wOBAcon is down substantially, but that’s due mainly to his decrease in strikeouts and horrid BABIP.

wOBAcon:
2008: .460
2009: .444
2010: .431
2011: .364

Love this progress:

Aforementioned BABIP issues:

He’s subbed liners for fly balls, which you don’t really want to see, but his BABIP is down across each trajectory and the weighted BABIP in the total row is down substantially.

With 34 games left, let's say 4.5 PA a game, which yields 153 PAs remaining.

Factor in his 11.3% walk rate and 16.7% strikeout rate and he’s left with 110 balls in play. At his season 45.8% flyball rate and 16.1% HR?FB, that would put him at 8.

Definitely in reach.

SSS. teh biggest issue is taking innings from price/shields and giving it to davis/niems.

though it may help shield the bp. itd be an interesting case study taht id love to see them try with our pitching depth.

by rglass44 on Aug 25, 2011 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

That's a fairly typical argument against the 6 man, but most teams don't have 6 pitchers of the quality we do

It’s not like you’re giving a bunch of innings to a space filler at the expense of your ace. We have 2 #1s, a bunch of 2’s, and a 3 or a 4. Sure the best guys don’t get quite as many innings, but if it means they can go 8 or 9 everytime out then that’s a pretty nice bonus. I liked it in it’s small experiment, but don’t think it could be applied as well league wide or even next year when we will probably lose one or two of these guys

All this trade talk

has me perplexed. I don’t understand why we need to shake things up. To me our payrole is managable with just a few tweeks.
In the last 120 games our current roster has a 69-51 record.
That is a .575 win percentage. Over a full season, 575 gives the team 93 wins.
The one upgrade that I think everyone is on board with,is an upgrade at ss.
A new ss and a move to a new division would make us a playoff team. Both of these scenarios look easily attainable to me.
Does anybody think this team has played over it’s head ,the last 120 games? I do not

im worried about a dropoff from our 1b position.

we need to address the bullpen somewhat (i think there are gains to be found through experience in mcgee/gomes), we need a bopper for 1b/dh (if we bring kotch back, then dh), a short term ss solution would be a nice start, and getting anything out of C would be nice. i do think people are undereestimating the talent on this team. whoever pointed out our anemic ba with risp points to a big reason for offensive failure. gtmi, smh.

jaso/cheerios
hammer/swisher (1b/dh)
zo/srod
furcal/reid
longo
joyce
jennings
guyer
fuld

catcher is pretty strict platoon w/ cheerios getting some righties. the 1b/dh is manned by hammer/swish with joyce occasionally at dh. zo can rotate to of against lefties if need be to get srod abs. reid spells furcal against some righties to try to keep him fresh. guyer/fuld in a platoonish lf with guyer spelling joyce in rf against some lefties and fuld spelling jennings against some righties.

If they haven’t traded him yet they aren’t going to. I’d still love to trade Beej and Niemann for Blanks, Frieri, and a low arm, but I’m not sure the Padres do that deal as Beej is redundant and they can literally call fans out of the stands to pitch at home games.
