Matt Moore Will Be Called Up From Durham Monday
According to Jerry Crasnick the Rays' top prospect, and the best pitching prospect in baseball, Matt Moore will join the team on Monday.
The Rays moved within 3.5 games of the Red Sox on Sunday and apparently are going all in on one last push for the playoffs. They play three games against the Orioles and four against the Red Sox this week before starting a series with the Yankees that includes a double header. It's likely that Moore will get the start in one game of the double header and will be used out of the bullpen until that time.
Moore has dominated at every professional level, winning the Southern League player of the year award and putting up a 1.37 ERA / 2.02 FIP and a 13.50 K/9 in 52.2 innings at Triple-A Durham to close out the season. With apologies to Jeremy Hellickson, this is the most exciting call-up the Rays have had since David Price made his debut in 2008.

Guessing it's for the pen since Farnsworth's elbow leaves them short-handed

I'm not a fanboy, I'm a _______
79 SO in 52 IP is unreal, even at AAA
This is the perfect opportunity to wean him in as the emergency closer.
14/f/cali
So who goes then?
Don’t we have to make room for some of these guys?.. I’d guess Moore has about 15 innings to work with if they plan on giving him 25 more than the previous..155 currently, 145 last year
Ekstrom got DFAd for Canzler
Jay Buente or Rob Delaney can go for Moore

Alex Cobb move to 60-Days DL?
Could open up a playoff spot for Moore also #justsaying
David Price all over again
Even sneaking him on a possible playoff roster like we did with Price too.

For people who are wondering, it appears that Matt Moore will be pitching in relief for the #Rays
I do this for free
any chance Matt Bush gets called up soon as well?
Our pen with Moore,Howell,Peralta and Bush working the later innings would be nice. Also hope Farnsworth can be back for that 4 game series with Boston

I really hope Moore starts one of the double headers.
I’ve got tickets for the whole series and I’m taking that day off work in order to get my Rays fix. Does anyone know if this uses up one of Moore’s/Canzler’s options by being added right now?
No. You've got it backwards.
Once they’re on the 40-man roster, if they get sent down and spend at least 20 days in the Minors for a single season, it uses an “option” (ie, they’re optioned). There’s no minor league left to send them down to for 20 days this season. Most players can be optioned 3 times. In other words, once they’re placed on the 40-man, they have three years until they’re full-time majors (excluding injury, obv). Anyway, after 4 years in the organization, they have to be added to the 40-man or be exposed to the rule 5 draft. I’m not sure what year each of these guys are on, but it may be that they would have to be added to the 40-man roster this off season anyway.
Hey All
Coming over from Athletics Nation.
I want to spend my first post telling you all how excited I’m about this!
Been watching this guy slay this year and its pretty special, serious serious envy.
Congrats on the sweep too, couldn’t have happened to a better team, really.
Here’s to hoping you get the wild card!
Rockies fan also dropping in
Super excited to see this. I did a guest post here the other night saying “Do it!” and reminding everyone of the historical precedent. Not just Price in ’08, but Adam Wainwright with the Cards in ’06. Remember him striking out Beltran to win the NLCS?
Using a top minor league starting prospect as a late-season reliever is a great way to break them into the bigs. Pressure on a rookie? Sure, but pitchers of this caliber KNOW they’re going to bigs soon anyway, so there’s none of the “Oh no, if I fail they’ll send me back down for good” pressure that marginal prospects have. Instead, it’s proven to be “This is where I belong. Let me pitch.”
This should be fun.
2011 Rockies -- what the hell?
Nice to see good fans from other teams stopping by to applaud rather than bad fans coming here to troll
Kudos, you guys.
and there goes our season

The greatest thing about calling him now
Is the pressure to start him in the big leagues the FO will get from the media/fans if he does well.
Hopefully we trade a starter over the offseason for some kind of bat, and free up a spot for him. Even if we do that, we have a strong 5-man rotation, while trying to figure out what we also should do with Cobb.

it would be risky but if we cant trade a starter
I wouldnt be opposed to felizing him. He would be like johnny venters but better and than stretch him out in 2013

I don't care if we trade FOR a starter
