The Offense, It Fails: Rays Lose Nightcap to Yanks, 4-2
There have been many defining moments of the Rays seasons thus far, but this one....this one I think takes the cake. Let's set the scene real quick.
Top of the eighth, score tied 2-2. The Rays and Yanks have been battling back and forth in this game, with the Rays refusing to give up and tying the game late thanks to two home runs from Kelly Shoppach and Sean Rodriguez. News has already broken that the Red Sox lost to the Orioles, so if the Rays were to win, they'd move to within a 1.5 games of the Sox with a chance to make it one game tomorrow.
Jeremy Hellickson and C.C. Sabathia neatly matched each other over seven innings of play, but Sabathia opened up the eighth by showing some signs of tiring. He got one quick out on a flyball by Shoppach, but then he allowed a single to Desmond Jennings and a freak single to B.J. Upton on a liner that bounced off his glove. Evan Longoria fell behind in the count 0-2, but fought back and refused to bite on a number of close pitches, eventually drawing a walk to load the bases.
So here we are. Top 8, tie ballgame, one out, bases loaded, and huge stakes on the line. The Yankees bring in David Robertson to relieve Sabathia, and up to the plate walks Ben Zobrist. It was now or never for the Rays; these sort of opportunities don't come by all too often against the Yanks, and you could just feel that if the Rays didn't score here, that was it - game over. The game and the season hung in the balance.
And on the first pitch, Ben Zobrist hits into an inning-ending double play. The Yankees would score two runs in the bottom of the eighth, and just like that, the Rays are 2.5 games back of Boston and they've lost the last three games in a row.
I'm not saying this loss is Zobrist's fault; even though he did have a horrible night at the plate, the Rays' offense in general was pretty pathetic. They also couldn't get in a run in the second inning, when they had runners on first and second with one out, and their 3-5 hitters went 0-10 on the evening. The Rays just struggled. They couldn't get the timely hit, and they weren't quite good enough in the end.
So it goes.
Game Notes:
-
Simply put, Thursday's game is now a must-win for the Rays. To help give them the best shot possible, Joe Maddon has flopped the rotation around; Matt Moore will get his first major league start Thursday, while Jeff Niemann will start Saturday instead. Supposedly this is because Niemann is battling some soreness, but what player isn't sore at this point in the season? I'm going to call a bluff on this one.

Let's see if this can help show how extensive Ben Zobrist is failing
In his last 30 days citing all AL players with at least 100 PA, he is dead last in :
wOBA 219
wRC+ 33
Wouldn’t you think he needs to be at least moved out of the middle of the order, where his failures wouldn’t be so devastating?

At this point anyone. The gap between bad and Zobrist is staggering

AT the time winning 3 of 4 at Fenway seemed thrilling, but now it's pretty commonplace
as the O’s did it on top of us very easily.
First time the O’s have won a series at Fenway since ’03

Given how bad Zobrist had been all day (0-4, 4 Ks), I would have preferred taking the 1 run on the safety squeeze there

frankly...
Maddon managed yesterday like the traditionalist manager that he has tried not to be during his stint here. If you squeezed your eyes and looked closely, that looked like a PInella-managed game in both cases.
Not using Peralta in the 8th for either case was very puzzling. Peralta is death to lefties this season and frankly is the best option now that we know Moore was not available because he was starting today. If Peralta comes in, that forces Girardi to stick with the rookie or put in Posada who hits righties very well but Peralta is an exceptional pitcher vs lefties.
If Peralta blows it, I can accept losing a game with your best relief option on the bump but I cannot accept Cesar Ramos and Brandon Gomes working high leverage situations in non-extra inning games with what is at stake.

That inning stunk
McGee struck out Nunez, allowed a 2-strike double to Swish, and got Granderson to pop out. His stuff was good he should’ve stayed in. Don’t want Teixeira hitting as a righty? Fine, pitch around him (which either Juan Cruz did or his control sucked, and if it’s the latter this is my point about just leaving the guy whose stuff looks good in) and let McGee face Cano. Also hate giving up the Cano AB even when Ramos got it to 3-1.

Eh, looking at Tex's splits, I'm okay with the decision.
Although like Jason, I’m not sure why he chose Cruz and not Peralta….I guess this is probably second-guessing since Cruz flopped and he’s generally been reliable, but that seemingly would have been a good time to bring in Peralta.
Instead, Maddon tried playing the matchup game, but I think a part of the problem is outside of a handful of guys, most of our ‘pen isn’t terribly solid.

Or in other words, Ramos is no Choate.
So you have to factor in the splits thing, but then also the quality of the reliever.

by having Gomes vs. a LHB with the bases loaded

Well....yeah, that was weird.
I’m not sure what Maddon was expecting. It’s like he brought in Gomes for Montero, and then got outmaneuvered when Posada came up.
For how bad he’s been overall, Posada has a .353 wOBA this year against righties.

But seriously, he played the matchup game for both Cano and Tex, and the pitchers walked the batters on both occasions.
Rough ’pen.

I thought of that.
But then I thought our bullpen holding a one run lead, and I couldn’t make up my mind anymore.
it would have brought up Damon with 2 outs and created a potential scoring opportunity
It was an impossibly tough day for Zobrist off the field with the travel, his daughter having the surgery and everything and striking out in his previous 4 PA’s in the day showed it. He took the same backdoor slider looking in the previous 2 at bats and chased a fastball up and away in the one before that in the game.

The safety squeeze used by the Rays only takes place with runners on the corners, not the bases
loaded as was the case last night. It works much easier when you have to tag out the runner instead of an easy force out at home
follow me on twitter @sternfan10
Also works easier when it is unexpected
Zobrist is a good bunter and the defense was not playing up….all he has to do is push it toward A-Rod. Deezy was on third so I’ll take his speed on a contact play over A-Rod cleanly fielding that ball and making the throw around the runner.
I'm not a fanboy, I'm a _______
by Jason Collette on Sep 22, 2011 9:13 AM EDT up reply actions
I would bet Zobrist could get one past A-Rod too, since he was in the dugout
and Chavez was at 3B last night.
Point is, how many times has Maddon put the play on w/bases loaded?
And if Zo had such an awful, trying day either give him the full day off, PH for him or bat him lower in the order, as his last 30+ days have been dreadful
follow me on twitter @sternfan10
even a stronger case...whoever
Assuming the pinch-hitting penalty, pinch-hitting for Zobrist in that case is a wash considering the options that were on the bench from the left side to face K-Rob.
Additionally, pinch-hitting for him means reducing the defense in the field in the final two innings at a key position on the defensive spectrum.

Valid points, but still a degree of uncertainty.

Sure but situational context is important
In the 8th inning of a tie game, that one run is crucial. Incidence of scoring a run is more critical than maximizing run potential.

I maintain that our bullpen versus the Yankees w/o Moore or Farnsworth is a high run scoring environment.
The expectations aren't ideal
But you still would have a second opportunity to drive in two other runners in scoring position.

Higher expected runs, but higher volatility as well. Swinging = bigger inning, bunting = better chance for just 1

The maych up Maddon wound up with Gomes v Posada, with the bases loaded
is probably not whta he envisioned at the start of the inning. Yankees have too many SH and Grandy and Cano hit LHP good enough that match ups become moot
follow me on twitter @sternfan10
They pinch hit for Montero with Posada as soon as Joe made that switch
Posada hits lefties this season (.810 OPS) while Peralta has held lefties to a .436 OPS this season.
In 60 PA’s, lefties have a .834 OPS vs Gomes.
It was a piss-poor decision

McGee needed to stay in, and if he had to be yanked; then you go to Peralta.
Matchups are a ridiculous game given the switch hitters and the hitters they have on the bench.

Don't know why everyone's so frustrated
this is how our offense has been all year. Great one minute, invisible the next. Inconsistent offense has been Rays MO for this entire regime. And that’s because the Rays can’t afford to get players with more consistency. Consistently good hitters get paid big money. Rays have to take chances and find players with upside and hope for the best. My goal is to strive for 90 wins. And if playoffs happen, they happen.

I just hope they go after some potential bats
whether Votto is realisitically available, Logan Morrison or Billy Butler would be excellent choices. Logan cheap, high upside with loads of power potential, and Butler an extremely consistent hitter with upside and only 25.

DITTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Rays are just a bunch cock teases.
They did this last year when they limped into the playoffs w/ no offense. I had to sit through those two Price starts at the Trop and this is just more of the same. We need some bats please :(
Moore should have a big advantage tonight.
With the Yanks celebrating late and having clinched the division, Moore will probably face the ’B" squad and a struggling Colon tonight. Should be an easy win….
…oh wait! Wasn’t that the scenario of the first game yesterday?
I'll pose this question and coming from me it may surprise you
Going into this NY series and knowing BAL was going to Fenway and play the Sox (haven’t won a series there since ’03 (4 game), did anyone think we would/could realistically gain ground in the WC chase after-conclusion of these events? I doubt it
So if we win today, we’re back where we were on Sunday afternoon, 2 GB the WC
Let’s win today and win both series at home and put some pressure on the Sox and Angels to do the same or stay home

I had said I was just happy the Rays made it interested
If Boston played well in the final two weeks and the Rays came up a little short, fine. I could handle that. But Boston is trying to give it away. They lost 3 of 4 to Baltimore and at best we won’t be any closer after tonight than we were Monday morning.

Joe was outmanaged more than I've ever seen anyone get outmanaged before yesterday
The whole Gomes to face Montero thing was just comical. It was like Joe didn’t realize that Gomes wasn’t going to face Montero.

If the last two arms available were Gomes and the incumbant Ramos, I would have been okay with the move
But my god, that was Peralta’s situation all year long. Peralta has certainy recorded 4 outs before.

follow me on twitter @sternfan10
Joe made a ton of moves based on 'feel' and they all didn't work
I’d rather have Friedman manage in game to be honest. Or just hire someone to make a logical program that can take into account numerous variables that Joe doesn’t seem to take into account (you know, like PH).
I thank Draysbay for proving that Loose Change fanatics exist in mainstream America, and more importantly for Chik-fil-A spicy chicken recommendations. My life is forever changed
There is more to managing the bullpen
Than the events of one game. Joe is without Farnsy and Joel can not be expected to pitch all the time. Joe tells his players to go day by day,but as the manager he has to strategically play out the rest of the year. He has to pick when an effective Joel will be used. I give him a pass on dumbass call.
The overiding issue facing the rays is Zo. Zo has to be productive for us to win. Kotch can not protect Longo and Joyce is questionable against lefties. Watching Briggy try to fill in for Zo is like watching Sonny pitch. We all know the outcome and it ain’t pretty.

Didn’t get number 20 last night but we got what was most important. A Yankees win and clinching the division. #Yankees
