Alex Torres Plays the Hero, Rays Stay in Hunt With 6-2 Win
Entering the day just one ill-timed loss away from irrelevancy, Saturday's game did not get off to a roaring start. Jeff Niemann was on the mound, working on a full seven days rest, and right from the beginning it was obvious that he didn't have his best stuff. After falling behind the first two hitters he faced -- and walking one of them -- he left a 91-MPH, please-hit-me fastball over the inside part of the plate to Jose Bautista. A mere 0.00005 seconds later, the Rays were down 2-0.
Niemann just barely managed to sneak his way out of the first without allowing any more runs, stranding runners on second and third, but Joe Maddon had already seen enough. To start the second inning, Maddon called in Alex Torres from the 'pen, later clarifying that he didn't remove Niemann because he was injured; he pulled Niemann because he was pitching like crap.
The Rays had managed to tie the game in the bottom of the first, scoring courtesy of a throwing error by Mike McCoy and a double from Johnny Damon. But the Rays weren't exactly hitting laser beams off Ricky Romero -- if not for that error, the Rays would have been blanked in the first -- meaning further offense was likely to be hard to come by. So no pressure, Torres -- you simply have to keep the game close, or the Rays' season is effectively over.
Keep the game close indeed. Alex Torres shut the Blue Jays down in order in the second, and he went on to toss five scoreless innings. He struck out five Jays while only allowing three hits and one walk, and it was easily his most impressive performance in the majors to date. He primarily worked off his fastball and changeup, mixing in a handful of sliders, and holy cow, his changeup can be quite devastating.
Torres threw his change nearly as often as his fastball, and while Brooks Baseball only shows him getting one swing and miss with it, I swear he had more. He was unafraid to throw his changeup in any count, including six on the first pitch, and the pitch had an unusual amount of movement. Changeups normally break like a fastball with more sink, but Torres's change was dancing out there:

It was a real pretty pitch to watch. Moore has stolen the spotlight this season, but it's worth remembering that Torres is a highly ranked pitching prospect and has quite a bit of upside as well. And his first major league win couldn't have come at a better time.
With Torres shutting down the Jays, the Rays were able to tack runs on the board at their leisure. Ben Zobrist hit his18th homer of the season to give the Rays a 3-2 lead, and then Johnny Damon tacked on some runs in the eighth with a three-run blast. Johnn...erm, Brandon Gomes, Joel Peralta, and Kyle Farnsworth slammed the door closed for the win, and the Rays pulled themselves within 1.5 games of Boston.
Yes, that's right - at 1.5 games back, the Rays could theoretically be tied with Boston by the end of tomorrow, assuming the Rays win their game and Boston loses both games of their doubleheader. Unlikely? Sure. But Tim Wakefield and John Lackey are pitching for Boston, so holy hell, I'm excited.

I wish we could see Torres at least 1 more time before season ends
Hickey has worked with Torres on pitching more north-south, according to an article in Sunday’s SP Times, to help reduce his walks. Today it really showed. He gets a handle on his walks and he can soar to the top of minor league prospect-dom, ala Moore when he got his control in order.

If Archer progresses, this'll be the most pitching rich the Rays have ever been.
Price, Shields, Hellickson, Niemann, Davis, Moore, Torres, Cobb, Archer…just incredible.

Andy Sonnenstine will be in our rotation next year. I think the redsux will steal him from us and add him to their dominating rotation. Similar to what they did with crawford.

Archer
should be dangled out in trade for a top prospect this winter. Not a mid level AA guy either. Teams that are pitching starved and looking for a top of rotation starter to add to their system, will overpay for a guy like Archer who has yet to command his stuff in AAA.
Archer could be an ace in the hole to obtain that catcher or first base prospect that the Rays are in the market for.

I hope Brandon Gomes doesn't get lost in this big win
I know Joe loves his match-ups but he went traditional today and it was beautiful to watch our 3 best relievers shut it down in the 7-8-9
potential for a shut-down pen is there
If Gomes, De La Rosa, and McGee continue to improve, along with vet carryovers Peralta and Farnsworth, Rays got the making for a above average pen.

are telling me that there is a 97% chance that Wake or Lackey win against the yankees and we lose against the Jays. Somehow I am having a hard time believing these odds. I do like the “it is not very likely” scenerio.
To tell you the truth, if I were an unbiased analysis, I would not think that it is very unlikely that Wake and Lackey crap out.

This just in
I forgot to take into consideration that the redsux saved John Lester ,by only letting him throw 55 pitches that the yankees absolutely crushed.Lester will be able to pitch against the showalters, thereby giving the redsux a 97% chance of winning
at some point the stats take a back seat
to the major mental gripping that must be happening in the Red Sox locker room. Heard Adrian Gonzales crow about this is “no different than our 2-10 start”…yeah, right. At 2-10 you still had 150 games to go, now you have 5.
“Saved” Lester – from what? He’s been terrible for a few starts, and if they expect strong performances from Lackey and Wakefield they’re like the Rays, pinning their hopes on rookies…except the rookies are like the 2-10 start – lot of time and promise. Wakefield is used up, and Lackey is just broken and not dealing with it well emotionally.
I really feel that the emotional aspect of this is taking a bigger toll on Boston than Jon Lester giving up 8 runs in 2 2/3 IP. The Rays were not expected to contend, the Red Sox were annointed WS Champs in March. That clubhouse has to be tighter than a drum head right now.
What in the world are you talking about?

So Guarded

How unlikely is it? I will go out on a limb and predict that the Rays and Red Sox will be tied come nights end. I will use the fringiest (new word) of statistics to make my case!
Rays have won 13 series in a row against Toronto at the Trop and for the hell of it, I’ll predict the streak runs to 14.
The Yankees have not lost a doubleheader since 2006 or something like that, so I’ll go ahead and hedge to a minimum split.
Wakefield and Lackey? I’ll hedge on a sweep unless the Red Sox put up a lot of runs and Girardi goes to the no name bullpen and basically says “uncle” in one of the games.
Go Rays!
Torres
Mentioned this on Twitter yesterday. For those who watched the game, Torres had a moment somewhere around his 2nd or 3rd inning of work where he seemed to really have a leap in confidence.
I’d like to say that he 100% believed he was a major league pitcher and he was in control of the outcome of each hitter. I don’t know if I’m saying it the correct way.
Another observation was he seemed comfortable with Lobaton and had a good rhythm going.
It was great to see. No doubt when Torres has his command and confidence he is a very difficult pitcher to hit.
Those seeing a future doe DeLaRosa also probably had Mssrs Glover and Corcoran on their fantasy teams
