Down On The Farm: July 12

Pretty nice day down on the farm. Hak-Ju Lee set a Montgomery record, and Tyler Goeddel is re-heating up.

AAA Durham Bulls (43-49)

The International League All-Stars were shut out by the Pacific Coast League All-Stars 3-0. Leslie Anderson had two of the IL's five hits batting second, and Dane De La Rosa struck out two in a scoreless inning. Former almost-Devil Ray Fernando Cabrera struck out the only batter he faced.

AA Montgomery Biscuits (11-8)

Montgomery rode a solid start from Nick Barnese in their 6-2 win over Jacksonville. Barnese earned his first win with his first good start since rejoining Montgomery, allowing just two unearned runs on five hits and no walks in 5.1 innings. He has a long way to go to restore his prospect status, but it was a nice start. Michael Sheridan was the offensive star of the game with three RBI including a double and solo home run. Ty Morrison also had two hits, and Hak-Ju Lee's double extended his hitting streak to a Montgomery record 21 games.

High-A Charlotte Stone Crabs (6-12)

A late home run by Hector Guevara gave the Stone Crabs a 3-2 win over Lakeland. Braulio Lara had his most effective outing of the year, only allowing two earned runs in seven innings. It's only the second time this year Lara has pitched six or more innings, and it's tied for a career long. He only struck out two, but he also only allowed one hit and walked two. Guevara had three of the team's six hits as Charlotte's leadoff hitter, and he also doubled. Sam Fuld played center field for the Stone Crabs and went 1/3.

Low-A Bowling Green Hot Rods (10-8)

Two Hot Rods combined to outduel A.J. Cole in Bowling Green's 3-1 win over Burlington. Trevor Shull got the start and struck out four in four scoreless innings, but it was Jake Partridge that got the win with five innings of relief. He allowed Burlington's lone run, but he did strike out five. All three Bowling Green runs came in the 6th inning. Juniel Querecuto drove in the first with a single, but the big blow came one batter later when Drew Vettleson drove in two with a double. Tyler Goeddel had two more hits for the Hot Rods, and he now has a .952 OPS in 16 second half games.

Short Season-A Hudson Valley Renegades (12-10)

Hudson Valley quickly fell behind 3-0 Wednesday and came up short in their 4-2 loss to Batavia. Jesse Hahn allowed three 2nd inning runs in his three inning start, allowing five hits, walking one and striking out four. Eduar Quinonez settled the game down with four scoreless innings as the Renegades cut the lead to one, but they would get no closer. Joey Rickard collected three hits as their leadoff hitter and stole three bases.

Rookie Princeton Rays (11-10)

Princeton was rained out.

Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (9-12)

The GCL Red Sox pitching dominated in game one of the doubleheader in the GCL Rays 2-0 loss. The Rays could only muster four hits against the Red Sox staff, led by starter Ricardo Betancourt with six strikeouts in 5.1 scoreless innings. Geisel De La Cruz wasn't up to the task, allowing two runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings. Bralin Jackson reached base twice, and Spencer Edwards recorded his first professional hit.

The GCL Rays poured it on in game two of their doubleheader to beat the GCL Red Sox 7-3. Jiminson Natera gave them a 1-0 lead three batters into the game when his single followed walks by Clayton Henning and Johnny Eierman. Natera would later hit a solo home run as the Rays expanded their lead to 5-0 before the Red Sox finally scored. Eierman and Natera both had two RBI. Stepan Havlicek threw four scoreless innings to start the game, and Damion Carroll and Jason Wilson combined to give up three runs in relief.
