Rays Community Prospect #22 Runoff
This time it is between three players: Canzler, Linsky, and Carpenter. These players are all fighting for the 8 or so votes between all the other candidates that have now opened up.
Russ Canzler: An older prospect, Canzler has some power and good hitting ability. His defense is limited. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=canzle001rus)
Lenny Linsky: Linsky was an interesting pick, as he was drafted so high despite being a reliever. Despite that, he should prove a valuable pick; a guy who can move up the system quickly and offers closer upside. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=linsky000len)
Ryan Carpenter: Another 2011 pick (7th round), Carpenter has an unusually high ceiling for a 7th round college pitcher. However, he has been unable to (so far) mantain the great stuff he has shown in some outings. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=carpen001rya)

Probably because he's not actually a good prospect
I’ve explained why over and over, and I have real backing for it. If people don’t want to change their minds, that’s their perogatives though.

I get what you're saying about righties at Durham, and lack of position, comparison to Lobaton, etc.
But theoretically, all of those things are quantifiable. What you’re saying is that they downplay Canzler’s numbers to a certain extent.
What would Canzler have needed to hit in Durham last year for you to think of him as an actual prospect?
It would be hard for me to think of him as one
But at the very least, he would have needed to hit better than Dan Johnson, Justin Ruggiano, Chris Richard, Kevin Witt and others who have never been able to make the major league transition have hit in Durham in recent years. It would also help if he had a defensive position, if he was younger, or if he had a longer track record of hitting well than two seasons.

Ruggs has never been given a legit chance.
He’d make a fine bench/4th OF on most teams, and would be okay as a longterm replacement. He seems to be good on defense and has 0.6 fWAR over the course of 207 PA.

That's all well and good
But a guy who hits well enough to be a 4th OF is not what you want of someone whose only natural position is DH.

Okay.
Is this a legit comp? Or are you just saying using Ruggs as a guy who has succeeded in Durham?

I mean he hit fairly similarly in the same environment
The only part that’s somewhat bothersome to me is the disparity in ranking between Guyer and Canzler, as they both hit about the same at the same age, and I’m not sure the defensive difference is enough to justify. I do, however, feel a lot more like Guyer could be a Jason Bay-style late bloomer than Canzler, and overall Guyer’s tools are just better other than power.

People with jobs love Canzler.
Being that people without jobs who live in their mother’s basement are better at baseball analysis, this probably means that he’s the wrong choice.
offensive, my mother and i live in a duplex and there are very few basements in florida

i'm okay with it
getting past the Canzler roadblock might move things along. Then again, there might be a massive C.J. Riefenhauser vs. Matt Bush duel to the death just over the horizon.

The Lobaton and/or Chirinos brigade should exists, but they don't
Either will likely make a bigger impact to the big club than Canzler, plus they’re catchers.

I think I'm voting for Riefenhauser next
by AndrewTorrez on Jan 12, 2012 10:47 PM EST up reply actions
he is basically the pitching equivalent of Canzler so
good numbers, questionable major league talent/potential.
the difference is that Riefenhauser is 21
and in the two years since being drafted, has done everything you could want a pitching prospect to do. I’m not saying that makes him the next Matt Moore or anything, but at some point you have to take the guy with the questionable scouting reports but glowing numbers. Now seems about the right time for that.

Sonny was great for us in 08 and servicable for a little while after.

if we get out of CJ what we got out of Sonny I'd be pleased as punch.

SSS
The numbers were pretty glowing in BG but really dropped off at Port Charlotte. That is very important for a guy with no above average pitches.
Not really.
CJ has zero above average pitches while many have agreed that Canzler can hit a little. Canzler has done very well at AAA at a reasonable age while Riefenhauser has only had success at Bowling Green and struggled some at Port Charlotte.
I like Jake Thompson much more than Riefenhauser.
yeah but there's something to be said for having an array of pitches and we've seen a few pitchers get by with that skillset at the majors for at least a few years
not saying it’s common or desirable, but if you don’t have a plus pitch it doesn’t completely spell doom for you. I hope he continues to show success as he moves up the minors.

Riefenhauser had crazy splits
There’s no way he survives as a starter having to face so many righties

if he becomes a lh-specialist, then id say the backend of the top 30 is a dec place (id personally go for higher upside guys who will probably never see a cup of coffee with my vote, though).
Why should a left handed specialist who hasn't even pitched well in A+ be at the backend of a Ray's top 30?
he isn't a lh specialist yet. he's still a starter.
but if he is death to lefties, then he should have a fairly good likelihood of being a RP. a guy with a good likelihood to be a big league player has a spot at the back-end of the top 30. just like people voting for canzler, linsky, and fleming.
I guess I don't see it that way.
It is nice that he has been death on lefties in A ball, but I want to see him put up similar numbers at higher levels like Canzler and Fleming have.
True.
But then again, I think there is a significant difference between Canzler and CJ. And I can’t find an arguement for taking CJ over Thompson.
Of course.
It just doesn’t make his posisition favorable. And he most certainly doesn’t have a nice floor like I have heard people suggest.
This Canzler thing
Reminds me of how Elijah Dukes got elected as the #15 prospect in all of baseball in the first MiLB community prospect poll. A few people were just very bullish on him, willing to ignore his blatant shortcomings, and since others were splitting votes, he somehow snuck in there.

and dukes would probably still be a big leaguer if he wasn't absolutely nuts with one of the worst family/support systems out there.
Would you like to re-read my statement?
