Scott Deal Official; Signs For $5 million in 2012, $6 million option
Via Marc Topkin. Scott's deal also includes a $1m buyout on the 2013 option, essentially paying Scott $6m for this season.
This deal pays Scott like he's a 1-1.5 WAR player, which looks about right to me. Scott has averaged 1.2 WAR over the past three seasons (and that's including his injury-plagued 2011), and his lowest full-season WAR total is 1.2. So even if we expect him to regress some due to age, injuries, whatever, this seems like a fair deal.

I want Pena too, but I wonder
Does this add too many players with holes in their swing? One of the reasons why they let Pena go was because of the strikeouts. What Damon and Kotchman added last year was contact. The trade-off was power. But the result was less K’s. Is the tradeoff of more power worth the extra strikeouts?

what makes you think pena would sign for $7mil?

Notes from Friedman's teleconference
On how Scott will be used:
-dunno where he will hit in the lineup yet
-depends on the other bat that we add
-love his success vs RHP & that he handles LHP well enough so you don’t need to have another roster spot to handle that
-Scott could even play 1st on opening day and may even see time in the OF at times
Does adding Scott affect handedness of what the team wants at 1st:
-other attributes factor in to that as well that we are still looking at
-still have a lengthy list of guys to look through to find the best guy possible
Everyone taking grounders @ 1st yesterday during workout:
-still looking for a bat, while being flexible to expand the applicant pool
-offensive fit with the unit, defense, and that net result
-there are times when enough offense trips the defensive value line when it makes sense for the team
Damon:
-his loss was more about the ability to add Scott and his abilities. Someone the team has valued for quite some time
Cobb:
-Very confident as to where he is at this time coming off the surgery
Trade/FA routes are still viewed as even possibilities. There are good options on both fronts weighing economics of FA deal against what you have to give up in a trade.
Still no hard & fast roster number so decisions are not being made solely on 2012

Not sure there
If you add a Pena, you could keep Canzler and jettison Elliot. The risk there is if something happens to Longo again, you have to shift Sean over to 3rd, Brignac takes SS, and there is no reserve MI available outside of what you call up (Beckham?) from Durham.
That’s why I keep looking at Betemit who could be the Aybar/Lopez type that has the ability to play both corners if needed

by Jason Collette on Jan 12, 2012 2:29 PM EST up reply actions
9 starters
Scott as full-time DH
bench is the backup C (Lobaton/Molina), the backup SS (S-Rod/Brignac), Fuld, and one other. I would think that’d be Guyer.
by AndrewTorrez on Jan 12, 2012 3:01 PM EST up reply actions
particularly if the 1B solution isn't a plus bat, that would be angrifying
Rays absolutely have to pinch-hit for Molina and Brignac every game, and if it’s a lefty, you’re basically talking about having one pinch-hitter on the roster (Sean Rodriguez). To me, it’s pretty obvious that the team needs a right-handed bat a LOT more than a fourth shortstop.
I know you’re just the messenger, but yeah, this Theriot talk is annoying.
by AndrewTorrez on Jan 12, 2012 3:11 PM EST up reply actions
yes, this is what I intended to put
2 blanks are for the missing 1B and the bench guy then
Lobaton switch hits, but you don’t use your 2nd catcher as a pinch hitter much & given that Fuld & Brignac are both lefties, that would almost dictate the other guy being a RH bat.
I'm not a fanboy, I'm an awesome dude

Don't give the Rays any ideas
They may carry Ruggiano over Guyer like they used him over Jennings last year.
Matt Moore. That is all.
I just don't see it
Guyer’s going to be 26, so you don’t care about service time, AND he’s now had a full season at AAA, so he doesn’t need any more time to develop. He is what he’s going to be.
by AndrewTorrez on Jan 12, 2012 3:20 PM EST up reply actions
Hey, I want Guyer on the 25 man roster also
It’s just how the Rays normally work that worries me about him.
Matt Moore. That is all.
Could you imagine if they somehow dealt Fuld this off-season.
Damon, Kotchman, and Fuld all gone at once? Fans might go nuts
In all seriousness, I think Fuld’s a lock to stay but that’s the only bench spot I’m certain about right now because he can play all 3 spots in the OF in a pinch. Plus, you know Maddon wants to let him pitch
I'm not a fanboy, I'm an awesome dude

Just thinking, Pena could sign elsewhere, sign Kotch plus, IF Cordero falls into our laps ($7M?), go ahead and jump on it (wow, that sounded weird). Payroll almost $70M? Just a dream, of course, but that’s a WS team.

The reason Casey Kotchman had such a great season is because that’s how he is supposed to play. He got an eye problem fixed so he can actually see the ball now…. Kotchman has the leading career fielding percentage of all 1st baseman… there is no reason as to why he shouldn’t have a gold glove right now.
@RealNolenBailey
Well
If the Rays brass has one weakness, it’s writing off clubhouse presence. They did the same thing after the ‘08 season, letting Hinske & Cliff Lee leave, and the ’09 team missed the playoffs. Damon was a great teammate & showed a young team how to act like professionals. I’d rather have that than 10 more homers.

And Cliff and the boys took quite a bit of pleasure hearing the complaints of the opposing teams and trainers about the volume of their hippity hop.

I suppose the Rays could have used those 17 plate appearances in which Cliffy hit .125/.176/.125 before hanging ‘em up for good. That’s definitely why the ’09 Rays missed the playoffs.

I don't know...
A full season of acting like a professional and we’re going to judge him for being upset that he wasn’t signed back? I don’t think any less of him.

"I’m disappointed in the fact that I thought they would be interested. They said they would, but obviously, actions speak louder than words. But at the same time, I respect it is a business decision. They made the decision that was right for their team, and I respect that. It’s their choice; they have every right to make that choice. I’m on to a new chapter in my life."
Except that’s what Luke Scott had to say about Baltimore today. That’s all Damon had to say. Scott gave 4 years of his career to Baltimore & could have been angrier, but wasn’t.
"Leaving Baltimore is difficult because I put in four years of my life there. The fans have been wonderful to me. I really appreciated the fans and the love they showed me. I’ll miss my teammates, of course. I built a really good relationship with my teammates. I desire the best for my teammates and for them to do well. At the end of the day, the game is a business and I am happy to be with the Tampa Bay Rays. It’s a great team, a great organization and I am glad to be a part of it."

given the number of Johnny Damon Specials he hit last year
that just doinked into shallow LF or RF and turned into doubles, I think teams have a very real fear that he might drop off sharply.
I liked Damon’s tenure here. He was always a class act around the fans on the road here in Baltimore; he’d come over and sign Rays gear, Tigers gear, Red Sox gear, even Yankees gear. (I never saw anyone try to bring Royals or A’s gear, but I suspect he would have signed that, too.) He talked to me every game and offered to sign anything I or my family wanted signed. He was much more accessible and much nicer than I expected. I’ll miss him.

At some point shouldn’t we stop worrying about that when you have players like 31 yr old Zobrist going into his 7th season with the Rays, and 30 yr old James Shields also going into his 7th season with the Rays. Not to mention players like Price, Longoria, Upton, etc.. who have been here for all of the past 4 years of playoff chases/runs.

How about another Lee?
I’ve tossed around the option of Derrek Lee as a cheap RH bat for 1st base. He plays solid defense and despite his O’s numbers last season, he provides some pop, could do some DH’ing and the Rays could pair him with a LH back-up 1st baseman(or a rotation with Scott).
But when it appears that other than Fielder(out of the Rays payroll) as an impact bat there is no one else available, I thought of Carlos Lee from the Astro’s. I am sure they want to move his 18.5 million left as he no longer fits in their plans(he is a FA next year) and he’ll most likely be moved at the deadline anyway. He had a good year in 2011 as he became strictly a 1st basema(who has played good defense 7.8 UZR/150 the last 2 seasons) and was a 4.6 WAR player. He could still hit 20+ HR’s and hits for average. Plus he has always had a ridiculously low KO rate, something the Rays could use in the middle of the order and he could be in a DH mix as well.
Rays couldn’t take on his entire salary but the Astros are trying to shed more salary and may be open to eating half his salary in return for one or two good prospects(maybe an/Archer/Romero and a young OF’er..Vettison?) Not sure if they would be interested in a Davis/Neimann but that could help a deal.
If the Rays were “going all in” for 2012, could they may be willing to add 9-10 million(like they did with Soriano) and maybe get an impact bat who fits in very nicely with what the rest of the line-up?
I don't feel Carlos Lee could hit 20 in this park
He turns 36 this season and his HR/FB rate has gone down each of the past 4 seasons, in a hitter’s park. He could have 50 XBH here, but 35 of them would be doubles

by Jason Collette on Jan 12, 2012 5:07 PM EST up reply actions
Perhaps but in comparison to Pena the projections aren't that far off in terms of production
Although both projections would be down at the Trop. But the difference is a much higher average and very few KO’s(100 less than Pena) and maybe those doubles become an asset in this line-up.
BP's projections
Carlos Lee: .273 TAv, 1.9 WAR
Derrek Lee: .283 TAv, 1.7 WAR
Carlos Pena: .292 TAv, 2.4 WAR
Bring back Los
I'm not a fanboy, I'm an awesome dude
i put the least value in BPro WAR of all the types, seems to correlate the least

I just don't like Pena's KO's in the middle.
400 combined KO’s between Longoria, Pena, and Scott is frightening.
Who else doesn't really like the idea of us becoming a HR hitting team in a pitchers' ballpark?
Here’s to hoping the guys get better at situational hitting.
let's not go crazy here
Adding one player isn’t exactly remaking the offense.
by AndrewTorrez on Jan 12, 2012 5:40 PM EST up reply actions
Agreed but this is under the assumption we will add Pena.
Or basically any typical 1B that is in our price range…basically, low avg designed to hit home runs.
Agreed and Scott is nothing but a "nice move" and although inexpensive, he is a risk.
It is an AF special that begins to “compliment” what is already here. The main move is going to be how he addresses 1st base now. The Rays need to be about striking out less, getting runners on, over and maximizing run scoring situations. Big bats with big holes in the middle of this line-up has been part of the inconsistency this team has struggled with the last few seasons.
I honestly don't think it matters.
Guys who are good hitters are good hitters no matter where they are. Just because you play in a big park doesn’t mean that the road to a good offense is a bunch of slap happy singles hitters. Find me a 1B/DH who can carry the position with his bat without big time power and I’ll take him, but Ichiros doesn’t grow on trees.
Most guys with that approach can’t sustain success.
by Whelk on Jan 12, 2012 5:43 PM EST up reply actions 3 recs
The Rays already hit a lot of HR and had one of the highest ISO in 2011
It worked then. I’ll take it in 2012.
btw, they were 6th in the AL in HR but 5th in the ALE. 5th in ISO but 4th in the ALE ahead of the O’s. I wouldn’t mind keeping up with the division in the power department to go along with the pitching rotation.

I guess it's all we can get at this point.
Since we can’t afford a high-OBP speed guy. I just hope somebody will hit at least near .300 for us. For whatever reason I feel that we’re getting away a bit from what the Rays are all about…occasional HRs, also speed guys who steal bases and guys that then proceed to drive them in with clutch singles.
So should we get a 1B who hits occasional HR's and is fast?

I would settle for a 1st baseman who can hit in the middle of this line-up, hit 20 Hr's, hit for a .280(or better) BA and won't strike out.
And he has to be an A+ fielder
It sounds like that's what this guy wants.

I think the gator man wants a "pure hitter"( a guy who not only can hit .320 but drives runs in when situations presents itself) in the middle of this line-up..d
….as opposed to one who has power but strikes out a 150 times and leaves a ton of guys in critical scoring situations. I tend to agree with that but they are few and far between so I would be fine with a hitter who may have some pop but is more likely to drive in runs because he is a very good hitter and makes good contact(as opposed to KO’ing a lot) in run scoring spots. In the Rays current make-up speed is not paramount but plus defense is because of the emphasis they place on it…especially with the opening being at first base right now.
I guess Butler comes to mind....again.

Butler does profile as that type of hitter but again, I don't see him as available as many here would think.
And while 24 million for the next three seasons is expensive and possibly could fit into the Rays long term budget, that option may have been removed with the Scott signing. Butler is not a good defensive player.

Guys who fit that offensive description last year (.280 AVG; 18+ HR):
Gaby Sanchez
Paul Konerko
Eric Hosmer
Miguel Cabrera
Carlos Lee
Albert Pujols
Add in great 1B defense and that takes out Lee (not his usual position, though he might be able to learn), Konerko, Hosmer, and Cabrera.
We’re obviously not getting Pujols, but I wouldn’t mind Sanchez. What I think this really shows, though, is the folly in describing the type of player you want as opposed than just looking for a good player, however he goes about being good.
by Whelk on Jan 12, 2012 6:15 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
Sanchez definitely fits that bill but I don't see him being moved right now.
That’s why Carlos Lee is interesting because he appear to be a candidate to be moved. He seems to have settled in as at least a good defensive 1st baseman and though he may show some signs of regressing, coming to a contending team couldn’t hurt. Expensive?…perhaps, but maybe do-able in the right deal.

And they have to ask ownership to let them spend AND they want the guy to platoon with Santana at 1B. Wouldn’t it make much more sense for them to get Kotchman?

I have no doubt there
But the lack of money and them wanting a guy to platoon, I think Kotchman fits them much better.

I want Pena but would be happy with Kotch
The beauty of signing is we hold onto to our pitching surplus, allowing AF to take out his whipping stick once a big pitcher gets injured or someone goes Hamilton-Cabrera in spring training. I am all for making a poor mans version of the Garza trade with Nieman or Davis to a desperate suitor.

few things
Didn’t get out of college until he was 23
Astros insisted on giving Jason Lane way too much playing time when he didn’t deserve it. He got 345 PA’s in 2006 while hitting .201/.318/.392 while Scott could only get 249 PA that season and hit .336/.426/.621. They had Preston Wilson on the other corner
who was just as unproductive in 2006 but the Astros were paying him $4M so they had to play him.
