Rays Community Prospect #26 Runoff
With only one vote seperating the two, CJ Riefenhauser and Robinson Chirinos are going to a runoff.
C.J. Riefenhauser (LHP): A 20th round pick in the 2010 draft, CJ had excellent numbers in a little over 100 innings at Bowling Green. However, reports indicate that he lacks an above-average pitch. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=riefen001cha)
Robinson Chirinos (C): Another catcher, Chirinos was nabbed in the Garza trade. Althletic for a catcher, Chirinos has shown eveything to be a good catcher, except a quick release. If he can get his throwing down, it is hard to see him not playing at the MLB level, even if as a reserve. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chiriro01.shtml)

can I point out that Chirinos hit .218/.283/.309 in 60 PA in the majors and .259/.343/.376 at AAA as a 27-year-old?

Only if I can point out righties hit like .280 against Riefenhauser
We might be talking loogy vs. backup catcher here

LOOGY with starter upside vs. a player with roleplayer upside?
That’s probably fair. I think people who assume Chirinos — who could neither hit nor field last year — is a “definite” MLB backup. I’m not sure he is (although obviously I hope so).

How about Loogy with starter upside vs. a player backup with an average starter upside?
Before this year, BA said he could be a starter. And while we all like to pick on Chirinos’ throwing, hiw blocking and receiving are both good.
And that he also hit a 159 wRC+ in AA-AAA the year before.
With a similar number the year before that/
I’m not going to dismiss him after one bad year.
25 in A+, 26 in AA
I like Chirinos. I hope he succeeds. I just think it’s important to consider the risk that he’s not a major-leaguer at all.

The risk is much higher that Riefenhauser doesn't make it, imo.
It seems to me that Chirinos has a higher upside and a higher floor. You obviously see it differently.

I might be weighing the brief stint Chirinos had in the Bigs, but I'd be shocked if he's ever close to average at controlling the running game.
that may be true, but his bat may be able to keep him as a back-up
while I voted for CJR, there is a good chance he becomes Carlos Hernandez Pt2, I very good AAA pitcher that just doesn’t have the stuff to make it in the majors.
His release did seem horribly slow.
But people said that his arm was strong. I’m assuming that those scouting reports have something to them, and that he’s still improving his release.
these seem like 2 awful options to me. i like pretty much every 2011 draftee listed more than these guys.
