Athletics Shopping Brandon Allen
Per ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, the A's are shopping 1B Brandon Allen.
Obviously here we would expect the Rays to have some degree of interest (lacking a long-term solution at 1B) but it's unclear how much.

Can anyone sell me
on Brandon Allen as a 1b for the Rays in 2012 and not a spring training “maybe” option at 1b?
Not saying I am against Brandon Allen, just need to be sold on him.
26 on opening day isn’t old but it isn’t exactly young.
367 Major League Plate Appearances and a .210/.297/.383.
If it means having to give a spot on the 25 (0 options) and give up something for him, is it he worth it?
I really hope we aren't interested
While he does have potential, I think we would have to be desperate to want him, and he probably gets traded to someone else before we get desperate. He should be about 10th on our list if 1B at this point.

b/w he and juan miranda we'd have two very intriguing low-cost candidates.
throw in canzler as well. id like to see us target another higher cost/named player, but id love to snag him for org. depth.
no problem
with that (combo option) and wouldn’t mind him in the system for organizational depth. If the A’s would take a Vogt or Ruggiano for him that is about as high as I’d go.
Am I devaluing him?
I would of probably never heard of the guy if not for his mammoth shot in Arizona
I’ll pass.
Matt Moore. That is all.
Am I in the twilight zone??
Why would you guys not what him?? Who cares about 367 PA? The kid can mash and has a great eye. TB has to take risks on players with high offensive upside if they (TB) ever intend to establish a stable hegemony in the AL East.

I'm not trying to knock on you, Joey.
Mr. Negative gave sound reasoning. If you have some reason why you don’t want him, I would love to hear it.
Hey Woody
can you sell him to me?
Kid can mash (AAA) and has a great eye (AAA) sounds good and I’d love to have him in the system.
What would you give up for him?
What is too much for him?
Would you automatically give him a 25 man spot?
Does he have any options left?
I think some of the static for Brandon Allen comes from the idea that it would take a decent prospect to get him and he’d automatically be given first base job and the search would be over.
I don’t think there are many here who care one way or another if the Rays did or didn’t land Allen, just what the Rays give up, where he plays (AAA/Tampa), and if like Rglass suggests he is only an option for part time duty, etc.
I'd give up Nick Barnese
or a similar level prospect

Brandon for Brandon trade
Guyer for Allen
A’s looking for OF’s, Guyer is actually a couple weeks older than Allen.
no no no no no

hell no
Ruggiano for Allen, 2 possible DFA’s as was already suggested. A’s need the OF’er more, Rays need the 1B more. Not that I think Ruggiano or Allen will ever be anything special, I still prefer him to Miranda who also failed in Arizona, it was a SSS but he failed in his short time in that little league park called Yankee Stadium.
Brandon Allen just seems like Pedro Serrano or the better known, Wily Mo Pena. I don’t think he will ever be good against something other than a fastball, if it has movement, he will K.
Matt Moore. That is all.
Difference between possible dfa and shopping a player
I’d say Kila is a more likely dfa candidate among A’s 1b than Allen
Ruggiano will be 30 vs allen 26
Dont know how that trade benefits the A’s at all.
How many are they gonna carry?
And who has options?
I think Barton makes the team but do any of the other 3 even have options left/can play a different position?
Matt Moore. That is all.
Some think Allen can play LF
He actually did with dbacks in limited time, he showed surprising athleticism and speed
I would offer one of our AA pitchers for Allen
I think the numbers he put up in ARI in a SSS shows that he has patience posting 170/350/483 and then he struggled in OAK but who didn’t last year. I wouldn’t mind giving up a lobsteing or maybe Barnese. Any thoughts? Who would be fair value from the Rays to get Allen? His insane raw power just intrigues the shite out of me, can’t get that moonshot he it in Chase that made J Upton look like GD that was a bomb and that’s saying something. Any thoughts?
Do you guys think BAL would consider trading Mark Reynolds for one of our starters?
this guy isn’t that far removed from a 44 HR 24 sb season and he looked pretty decent at first after not hacking it at 3b. Any thoughts? Who should we offer?
Never easy to get a same division trade
but Mark Reynolds. If people think Upton strikes out too much, they will flat out hate Reynolds.
Matt Moore. That is all.
But Reynolds Ks swinging
He’s more of a Karlos Pena model, of which most fans are more forgiving.
Use the force, Lueke
Because he never met a pitch he didn't like
I don’t understand what stopped us from throwing 3 crap pitches to him and getting the K last year. He hit us pretty well and the guy swings at everything.
Matt Moore. That is all.
You like a poor man's Branyan?

Speaking of 1B that can hit moon shots
I don’t like how we don’t even get mentioned anymore.
According to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman, Carlos Pena is drawing interest from the Indians.
He’s also being considered by the Yankees, and perhaps the Tigers. Pena, 33, batted .225/.357/.462 with 28 home runs and 80 RBI in 606 plate appearances last season for the Cubs. He’d make for a solid addition at DH or first base for the Tribe. They’ve also expressed some interest in Casey Kotchman.
I understand why all 3 would be interested but Rays are hopefully interested also. Derek Lee is leaning towards retirement and I am getting this feeling that Kotchman will be back at 1B in 2012.
Matt Moore. That is all.
I have liked Allen as well but I think the Rays have him already in Juan Miranda
The concern is that the Rays have signed their DH in Scott and because he is a LH’ed bat who may struggle with left handers and already strikes out a ton, they have to balance new bats with guys who don’t KO. Allen is most likely a clone and Pena may be as well(and a lot more expensive). I still believe the Rays need a solid bat(or two platoon bats) that they can count on offensively to produce decent numbers but who can do the job defensively at first base, with one of them being a RH’ed bat.
If not Carlos Lee(who could play the position for 150 games), than Derrek Lee has to be considered a mostly full time guy along with a lefty handed bat to back-up(maybe Miranda). From the A’s, Chris Carter(RH’ed) would be a better upside guy, but the problem with him is he is butcher with the glove and the Rays have Scott already to DH. Barton could still be in play because of his defense and OBP and he would cost the same as Allen.
4 million to play on a contender, for the first time in years, get some days off to DH once in awhile, climate controlled temperatures...
…might convince him to play one more year.
I think Derek Lee is an NL hitter
He’s still low on my FA list but I’m not sure who AF actually wants.
Matt Moore. That is all.
Perhaps but I might be inclined to throw out his half year with the O's, considering his past history.
I mean…who really can get excited about playing for them?
If AF had someone in mind, he may have already acquired him. Have to think he still has designs on whomever becomes available once Fielder signs.
With Gomes signing with the A's(another DH/LF type), both Allen and Carter seem to be heading out of town
Carter would look good, if not for Scott being here. I don’t think the Rays could afford to carry both at the same time, although stashing him in Durham(insurance if Scott isn’t healthy) or even for 2013 wouldn’t be the worst thing.
They are fine for AA depth, sure
but we don’t have a 1B at the moment and we have 6 pitchers. I hope Friedman can find a trade that fixes both issues fast because shockingly, I am not patient.
It also seemed like the off season was picking up steam. One day, we hear that the Rays are interested in Damon and Pena, the next we hear we like Scott and within an hour, we sign him, soon after, AF is talking about another bat coming and the Maddon extension and then…it died again.
Matt Moore. That is all.
Agreed on needing a definitive solution for at least 2012.
I recall what AF did when he traded for Soriano as the last piece to the 2010 puzzle. Which keeps bringing me back to Carlos Lee. Take on half his salary(8-9 million) at the cost of a Neimann. Than bring in a cheap back-up to supply late inning defense and some flexibility.
Carlos Lee can hit, don't get me wrong
But I feel like AF can and will do better than him in the end. Plus if you want to pay a guy 9 million to play 1B, why not ask the White Sox to eat just 4 million and get Konerko instead?
Matt Moore. That is all.
First, Konerko, the Sox most popular player, is going anywhere right now.
Second, he is still owed 25.5 million dollars….. 12 million this year and 13.5 next year(with 7 million of that deferred at 1 million a year for the next 6 years). That makes it 18 million to account for to see what the Sox will eat. Half of that might require a very good prospect going back to the Sox.
Two years of Konerko for 9 million?
Indeed. But that is not going to happen. Even if the Rays took all his contract(which would be a risk at age 36), because he is still super productive, trading him with 2 years left ,the Sox would be talking a very, good prospect. He has a very, very nice contract.
With the Tigers losing VM, the division opens up for the Sox still being a contender with the addition of maybe one more OF’er. Which is why I don’t see them moving Konerko this season.
They traded Queintin, Santos, Frasor already
And are still trying to trade Floyd and Thorton. The Danks deal was out of no where but they sure don’t seem like a team going for it this year.
Matt Moore. That is all.
I will say this though....
…Carter has had a lot more PT at first base over the last 3 seasons and he may becoming adequate enough to handle the position in a platoon system…especially if he finds his game offensively.
