With all of the rumors surrounding the Rays 1B options seeming either implausible, rehashed, or terrible sounding, and many analysts talking about how Fielder's signing will set the rest of the market, I have an interesting idea to propose
Fielder signs with the Nationals--latest trend, from what I hear
and the Rays trade for Adam LaRoche--either a SP like Davis for the bottom of their rotation, or Upton, since they need a CF quite badly. The link below discusses the Nationals signing Fielder, and LaRoche, his contract, trade value, etc. I found the discussion by National's fans at the bottom most helpful.

LaRoche is worth less than zero to the Rays
Unless Washington eats LaRoche’s contract, they won’t offer even a bag of peanuts.

The Nats would probably take a C prospect from the Rays and pay 5-6 million of Laroche's salary.
That might not be a bad 1 year deal if nothing else materializes this winter.
They think they could get Upton straight up
Upton is a 4 WAR player with an outside chance of a breakout year this year. Laroche is a 2 WAR player tops. I would take Laroche as a salary dump if they eat $3 mil of his salary. Would effectively be like signing Luke Scott to a 1 yr/$6mil deal.
