Pena & Fielding
The ESPN StatsInfo blog should already be on your reading list as it provides outstanding information throughout the year. Today's column has this factiod:
"Baseball Info Solutions does video review of every play of every game, tagging plays into more than 30 categories of Good Fielding Plays. Pena was the 2011 leader in the category most pertinent to first basemen: Handling Difficult Throws.
Pena was credited with 58 instances of handling a throw that was either in the dirt or close to pulling him off the bag, 13 more than anyone else in baseball. That’s the most by any first baseman in a season since BIS started charting the stat in 2004. "
Read the link to see what else Mark Simon has to say about Pena as there is some bad with the good.

from Joel Sherman today
#Rays had budgeted about $6M for Pena, but when VMart was lost upped to $7.25M becasue were afraid #Tigers would jump in and take him
by Jason Collette on Jan 22, 2012 11:48 AM EST reply actions
Meaning the Rays are now over budget?
Could get back to it by moving Davis, 1.5 million(with added savings over the next three(7.6 million) which may come in handy.
Or go under and move Neimann…about 3 million…and have some money to add a catcher
They don't have a firm budget number
AF & Stu have always referred to it as a fluid number. If they need more for 2012, they look down the line and see where the dollars can come from.

Psh they got plenty of extra money

funny/(sad?) that nobody follows the law
Then again, military bases that are closed are supposed to give first preference to homeless coalitions yet Orlando gave the old navy base to a developer at a steal of a deal and then just paid some kind of arbitrary fine later on.
by Jason Collette on Jan 22, 2012 7:15 PM EST up reply actions
Shouldn't that stat
be accompanied by the number of total throws deemed difficult to handle? Did Pena have significantly more chances to handle such throws?

The data is subscriber-based and very expensive
In fact, I don’t think they even offer it to anyone but the teams and the conglomerates. I’ll check with Simon though

This is also a good spreadsheet.

You can play with the reverse rankings on each defensive measure for every 1st baseman here
..Rtot..Rtot/total…..Rdrd…Rtrd/year…pretty interesting
I would keep an eye on Nick Evans if he doesn't make the Pirates roster
…and he rakes against lefties too.
He's on a minor league deal with an invite to camp
Would guess Indianapolis is in his future.
by Jason Collette on Jan 22, 2012 12:30 PM EST up reply actions
He was out of options with the Mets. I wonder what the rules are when you leave an organization
Does MiL options begin again? He was a free agent when the Pirates picked him up. Seems he could opt out again if he doesn’t make the team.
He's on a minor league deal now
Not on the 40 man roster so it wouldn’t matter. Just like Kotchman last year.
BTW, Rays have to make another 40 man move to add Pena to the roster. I’m guessing that comes on Monday

De La Rosa or Ruggianno?
unless AF has a deal coming over the next couple of days.
They have to make a move once the signing is "official" and announced by MLB
Ruggiano seems to be the logical candidate unless they can move someone for something low because another team wants preference over another to avoid the waiver process.
I’d like to see Ruggiano get a chance with the Astros. Lets him get back home and they have the playing time to offer.
by Jason Collette on Jan 22, 2012 12:49 PM EST up reply actions
Either or both probably clear waivers, although AF likes to save those moves for later in the spring(for guys he wants to try to keep).
Have to think he is still actively looking to make a trade at this point.
I find this a silly thought.
After taking care of their first base vacancy, the Rays can now accelerate a deal for B.J. Upton to get a shortstop. Currently, Sean Rodriguez is slated to play there over Reid Brignac. Tampa Bay could also use an everyday catcher, with Jose Molina currently slated to start.

And Topkin sets Cafardo (above) straight:
With Carlos Pena aboard, the Rays are probably done shopping, writes Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. While there’s some talk of adding a right-handed hitter to the bench, it’s not likely to be a major signing. A trade is still possible, however, as they have a surplus of starting pitchers.

Yea, Cafardo's comment made no sense
I just don’t see a C or a SS on the market that makes sense to move BJ in his final year for. It would have to be a big name & paired with a SP to make the most sense but a team willing to do that isn’t going to give up an everyday SS and take a rookie at that spot or sign the drek that is left on the FA market for that spot.
Alcides Escobar from KC? Too lopsided of a trade
Brendan Ryan? Like Escobar, defensively worth it but the bat….
Would have enjoyed Scutaro, even at $6M, but the Rox appear to want to use him at 2B this season and go with all of that young and unproven pitching. A SP for Scutaro swap would have been nice.
by Jason Collette on Jan 22, 2012 12:09 PM EST up reply actions
Jonathan Herrera would make a decent UTIL IF.
Can’t really hit well, but he’s got good patience and a good eye, and he plays good defense, I believe.

More curious to see who the team adds for org depth as jobs are drying up
I like the Rhymes pickup but wouldn’t mind another experienced bat or two in Durham
by Jason Collette on Jan 22, 2012 12:30 PM EST up reply actions
Scutaro would have been nice hitting in the 8 spot.
Davis or Niemann are both better than Mortensen right?
by JoeMasGlasses on Jan 22, 2012 1:02 PM EST up reply actions
Easily
But Boston & Rays are never going to make a trade with one another as long as both are considered ALE contenders.
Fact Rockies traded for Slowey and then flipped him to Cleveland a few weeks later seemed odd. Maybe they’re still on the market for a SP, maybe not
by Jason Collette on Jan 22, 2012 1:04 PM EST up reply actions
Mortensen is terrible.
Probably wouldn’t even make the Durham rotation.

Yeah I guess its just a salary dump so they have $ to get Oswalt
At least that is what MLBTR is reporting. Still seems like they could have gotten more for Marco. That would be sweet if the Rox flipped him to the Rays, he would fit what we need pretty well.

Rays can't afford Scutaro at this point.
Suddenly no love for Brignac and S-Rod?
I don't think there's any denying that Scutaro is a better bat at SS than either.
by JoeMasGlasses on Jan 22, 2012 1:16 PM EST up reply actions
Scutaro has low risk involved
Rodriguez and Brignac are high-risk while Rodriguez is the only one that has a chance at high reward but that would take a significant change from his performance vs RHP to date.
by Jason Collette on Jan 22, 2012 1:20 PM EST up reply actions
Yep
But I think Scutaro exemplifies the offense/defense tipping point that Friedman has mentioned a few times. Jason Bartlett, if you will.

BTW....thanks to you all
We’ve already surpassed 100K visits this month on the site and are on pace to eclipse any 2011 in-season monthly total. By later today, the 1st 22 days of January will have eclipsed all of March, October, and November of last year
As I said in another post, if the Rays can live with Pena's KO's, Blanks as a RH'ed DH/1st base platoon/Lf'er makes sense
Move him for Neimann. Or make it Davis and a decent prospect and have the Padres add Hundley.
Pena & Kotchman help Evan's Gold Glove
Evan is surely thankful for Los and Kotch. He has even admitted so. Evan is notorious for short arming routine plays. He just takes them too easy. Difficult plays he is right on.
You are correct...
But the throws in which you have time to actually consciously think about your motions just makes the throw harder. On those tough plays it’s usually just get rid of it as quick as you can, thus taking out the thinking part.

So do we trade for a young cost controlled 1B now
that has a ton of upside but needs some more simmering in AAA, or do we cross that bridge next off season. I feel like this year to year 1B thing doesn’t give the fans something to connect with. I love Pena personally, but don’t see it being longer than a one year relationship. We need a year to year anchor in the Longoria vein we can watch.
It would be nice
I do not really see an ideal candidate to shift to 1B from the farm next season unless the team wants to give Joyce a year of working on it and let him do it next year.
It is an expensive position to fill due to the power demands of the role.
