The 2012 Rays really starting to round into shape. I would keep ALL the pitching (may need to trade them to fill greater 2013 needs) and need to get blown away to trade Upton. We do need another catcher however. Maybe planning to sign Keppinger/Renteria/Theriot and trade Brignac for a catcher, with Beckham and HJL in the wings?
Tigers might be in "all in" mode, so to speak, and more willing to shell out resources for another starter?

He’s an 80 hit tool with power. Even if the walks don’t come, that’s what, a Vlad Guerrero comp? I’ll take that.

Prince Fielder was a free agent meaning he could sign anywhere. The Detroit Tigers baseball team offered him 214 million over 9 years to play for them. Prince Fielder accepted.

every time i use it
you should see the look I get from Stu when I sport my purple Boggs jersey!
This deal makes no sense because
1) Detroit already has one of the best 1Bs in baseball
2) They already have a DH (who is only missing 1 year with injury)
3) There’s no way anyone else was offering anything close to 214M
by benderbrodriguez on Jan 24, 2012 3:22 PM EST reply actions
It is simple....
Have Fielder at 1B this year with Cabrera at DH. When Martinez returns next year, move Martinez to catcher, keep Cabrera at DH, and keep Fielder at 1B. Then move Aviles to the SS posistion and move Peralta to 1B. And then you move Fielder to 2B. Santiago then has to learn to play RF, moving Boesch to LF. Raburn takes a seat on the bench and Delmon Young takes the catching position. Martinez then goes to 2B and Fielder goes to the bench.
Between all the moves, the defense should get a little worse. But Boras said the Tigers had to have Fielder, so I guess they did.

Take a good look at the Carlos Lee/Astros situation this year
Because 6-7 years out, Detroit will be in the same boat. I mean car.
Carlos Lee was never anywhere near as good a hitter as Fielder

And it was for 6 years, not 9.

Wow!
I guess that takes Detroit out of the market for Damon.
They did this because Martinez is out this year? Are they anticipating moving him before the 2013 season? He is still owed $38 million from 2012 through 2014.
"I have interest knowing that I loved playing there and they are a team built to win," Damon said.

I don't see anyone else
unless Toronto is interested to platoon him with Encarnacion or perhaps limit Lind’s exposure to lefties. As far as I can tell, Encarnacion does not have much of a split vs. righties, but Lind has been pretty bad against lefties.
Still, it doesn’t seem Damon has much bargaining power left.
I'd rather be dead then go through another season of Johnny's Quest

I agree with most what everyone is saying
Detroit had no need for the guy, unless they think they are all in this year, with that division, but even then, their pitching staff is definitely succeptible to failure, ESPECIALLY with a injury to one of them. Turner could be the turning piece. It makes no sense financially or position wise, other than wanting to spell Cabrera half the year at first. They still owe Martinez a ton too. This is what makes the “1 game playoff” so damn stupid and scary,.
If you believe in a religious god or deity, tell Santa hi for me too.

Victor = 36

Wow....wouldn't think that much disparity.

yeah. i was just gonna say subtract martinez's wOBA from fielder's wOBA then divide by 1.15 and multiply by however many PAs.

With the Tigers no longer needing a DH, they may have lost any interest in bringing back Ordenez
He had to have been considered a possibility, but probably no longer. If healthy, he may accept a lesser role(and money) to PH, DH part time and if his foot is healed well enough, he could still play a few games in RF, giving Joyce a day off against certain lefties.
If Thome can accept 1 million to basically just PH in the NL, Ordonez may see the value in playing on a contending team, getting 200 AB’s and making 1-2 million.
Wow, Fielder in the AL. This probably doesn't hurt us too bad, but, wow.

But I still think it’s absurd. Prince may be worth 20M/yr for the front half of the contract, but sluggers don’t age well. This will be an albatross by the end of the deal.

In short
He’s a one tool player being paid like a superstar.
by sattp on Jan 25, 2012 10:00 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Hitting for power and average are two tools that maybe 5-10% of MLB players have combined at his level
†††If you love Jesus Chris and are 100% proud of it, copy this and make it your signature!†††
by Sandy Kazmir on Jan 25, 2012 10:38 AM EST up reply actions
You are correct about the number of tools (and how good he is at them)
But I would be hesitant to hand out a paycheck like that to an all bat 1B/DH type player. He’s certainly one of the better average/power hitters in the league but you’re going to pay face value for those tools. The tools you usually get more of a bargain on (defense, base running, position scarcity, etc) are simply non existent.
It’s certainly a defensible move since the Tigers are in win-now mode and you can pay a bit of a premium for the productive years you’ll get out of him while that window is open even if it harms you at the end. However, I’m certain they won’t get $214M worth of production out of him. That and the fact they are going to harm their defense by moving Cabrera up the defensive chart takes some value out of it.
Don't worry about the money, it's not yours. The Tigers just added one of the premier hitters in either league to their offense. That's a good thing
The upgrade in offense is worth the tradeoff in defense for the next five years. No other team has two .400+ wOBA hitters in their lineup that I can think of. You can’t gloss over his strengths and only highlight the weaknesses because his strengths make him a 1%er in his field.

by Sandy Kazmir on Jan 25, 2012 1:06 PM EST up reply actions
Don't get me wrong. He's a great player but has some flaws.
I am just stating that they pretty much paid face value for him and that’s precisely what they’ll get. It’s not an awful deal and if the Tigers are spending big then they could have done worse but it’s not like a great deal or anything.

wOBA figures are from Zips, yes.

If Cespedies signs with the Marlins(and shuts out the Nats again), I can see the Nats giving AF a call about Upton
Only player on their roster I would have to get would be Henry Rodriquez as a set-up/ closer type for 2012. After that I need 2 good prospects that fill out Rays needs..one of their 1st base prospects..Moore or Marrero(whom ever they value more) and Lombardozzi, who becomes the utility player the Rays seem to be looking for.
That combination may be worth what you could expect to get for Upton now. A good ML’er, all be it a reliever(but one that would solidify the back end with closer potential) and two good prospects of need. If the Rays are comfortable with giving Guyer LF for 2012, it could fill out the roster, especially if they want to move a SP for catching help.
Bleacher Report was advocating Upton for Espinoza
Im not sure how much I like Espinoza more than seanrod. Struggles versus rhp and strikes out a bunch, but switch hitting abilities are nice. Im assuming they would play lombardozzi at second.

Too bad it's Bleacher Report.
I would be down for Espinosa. 3.5 WAR as a rookie 2b who plays good defense. Plus, he’s had more success and achieved more of his potential in the majors leagues already than Rodriguez has. I like Rodriguez a lot, but Espinosa seems like the guy Rodriguez was supposed to be, so why wouldn’t you prefer that?

.251 BABIP last season. Put up Pena like numbers 18 BB%, 27 K%, iso over .200 and defense continues to improve every year. I see him more as a Napoli type (pre texas ha).

If a three way needed to be created...Rays , Nats, Padres?
..how about Rays send Upton to the Nats, Chirinos to the Padres
Nats send Desmond to the Padres and Tyler Moore to the Rays
Padres send Hundley to the Rays and Bartlett to the Nats.
That actually seems kind of even at first glancr
I still hope we could get more for upton though. Upton and Chirinos for Hundley and Moore seems light. I would hope Upton could net that alone without Chirinos being involved.

that certainly depends on the standings, doesn't it MR budman3?
"Please break your typewriter and computer and never come out of your ass cave again"
Yes it does but to my point, what does it matter if a reliever is in the package? Now or later?
If the Rays get a couple of good prospects and happen to also get a ML reliever in the deal, what’s the issue? Is it just that I named Hernandez first(as the rostered ML’er that might interest them). Seems to me that Upton’s value should bring back some combination of a ML’er and at least a top 50-75 prospect(maybe two). I don’t think the Rays would get hung up if the ML’er was a quality reliever and any prospects were valued by them.
So you're trading Upton for a reliever? Got it.

And at that, they will have to expect to offer him at least a 12 million contract(set by averaging the top 125 players salary). Would you offer him that much to maybe pick up a pick and maybe a supplementary one?

While they have big talent, I don't think they will put it together this year

I see it like:
Rangers
Yankees
Rays
Tigers
Angels
Sox
Jays
This is obviously biased and bold, but I believe this list could be flipped any and every way possible, excluding the Jays. Speaking of the Jays, I love the direction they are heading, and would love it more if they weren’t in the ALE.
Bold prediction: the Jays will finish 3rd in the division this year, in front of whoever implodes (I’m thinking and hoping Yankees).

The Angels are really, really good
Daren, Weaver, Wilson, Pujols, Kendrick, are all probable all stars, and Bourjos, Aybar, Callaspo, Hunter, Trumbo all project as above average players (some with all-star upside). Not to mention that Mike Trout’s waiting in the wings

Like I said, I'm optimistic
Heck, I’m predicting the Yanks will fall apart and the Angles won’t put it together. Maybe it’s bed time.

The Jays main problem is they lack any position players who are even league average, after Bautista, Yunel, and Rasmus (assuming Lawrie wasn't a flash in the pan, you could include him too)
And their only reliably good pitchers are Romero and Morrow (who isn’t without any question marks of his own)

Actually the Jays really aren't all that good...

Jays have major upside, but they still need back end pitching BADLY.
And yes I like the Angels, they are old, and now that I think about it, a injury to someone might be a bad thing to be able to bring Trout back. Rangers pitching is way suspect in my view, lineup is nice, but where we really differ is on the Sox. Ellsbury won’t have a year like that, Ortiz is really done, Youkilis’s back is off the health radar, Crawford is gone for a while at beginning and is just looking awful, they traded the spark plug Reddick, Aviles at SS (really), and their top 3 pitchers are a walking injury. I think they finish 4th.
If you believe in a religious god or deity, tell Santa hi for me too.
Also to mention that Cherington is dumping minute payroll of production
to probably sign Oswalt, who will join Youkilis on the lower back orthopedic chair every day, and their fans are really nervous about what he is doing. Trust is not anywhere in that organization at the moment. Its in shambles.
If you believe in a religious god or deity, tell Santa hi for me too.
Their position players need more work than their pitching really almost
Adam Lind at 1B? Thames in CF? No one at DH?
These are 3 positions they’re getting basically REPLACEMENT level production from. The Rays don’t even have that many below average positions (assuming you think Luke Scott can be a league average DH)

Rasmus will play CF, he won't be as awful last year...
and I really like Rajai, but he is their 4th of behind Rivera. Encarcion is their DH. If Lawrie plays like last year, their lineup is pretty potent. but they won’t make playoffs no.
If you believe in a religious god or deity, tell Santa hi for me too.
If Rasmus is in CF, they're screwed in LF
Encarnacion at DH has little to no value, I would think
by benderbrodriguez on Jan 25, 2012 12:38 AM EST up reply actions
Encarnacion was actually pretty respectable at DH second half of the season
which is when they got him away from 3B. For his cost he’s pretty good value.
You’re right that we’re a ways away though, 1B and LF are still big question marks and behind Romero and Morrow we only have a few probables atm. Best guess is that Alvarez will be a very tidy addition to the rotation this year, he’s going to be very good, the rest of our depth is all question marks though.
The Jays will be an above .500 team this year, if only for having Johnson/Rasmus/Lawrie fulltime and having Arencibia healthy. We’ll likely not threaten you guys for a playoff spot though.
Yup
I still like the direction they are heading—made a couple nice trades; young talent—and while it won’t be enough this year, I think they have a bright future.

But let me make this clear, I mean sleeper team in the ALE, not playoffs.
I think the upside is a third place finish in the division with a little help from somebody.

Ortiz is really done? What reason could you possibly have to believe that?
Other than that I mostly agree with you
by benderbrodriguez on Jan 25, 2012 12:21 AM EST up reply actions
he played last year for a contract, he was gung ho on having a good year
and the only reason he came back to Sox was because nooone wanted him, he is late thirties and his wall that he will hit will be quick quick, and when they started faltering in beginning a little, he will mail it in. I’m positive.
If you believe in a religious god or deity, tell Santa hi for me too.
You're actually being quite negative.

About Ortiz, well yes. Thats the point of believing he is gonna hit the proverbial wall.
I’ll attempt to be more positive about my negative thoughts on someone

ah shyt.....damn it how did I miss that.

To me, as long as he doesn't hit a bomb, I'm fine.
He is worse than Sid Bream on the basepaths and actually holds up the other runner more often than not.

MLB network pretty much did the same thing last week...
there is no ESPN conspiracy against the Rays
