Jesse Johnson-US PRESSWIRE
The non-tender deadline has come and gone with a few surprises.
Last night was the deadline for clubs to tender contracts to their arbitration eligible players.
Of the Rays eight eligibile players, all but one, OF Ben Francisco, were tendered contracts.
The players that will be going to arbitration are David Price, Jeff Niemann, Sam Fuld, Burke Badenhop, Matt Joyce, Sean Rodriguez and in somewhat of a surprise due to potential price tag, Ryan Roberts. Francisco was the only non-tendered Ray. The Rays under Andrew Friedman have never lost an arbitration case.
The Rays must see a future for Roberts, perhaps playing a lot of second-base for the club in 2013.
Elsewhere, notably non-tendered was Orioles 1B/3B Mark Reynolds, who would make an excellent target for the Rays who are in need of a corner infielder with pop. Reynolds struggled at times in 2012 but hit 15 home-runs after Aug. 1 and finished the year with 23 bombs.
- Once thought to be a future ace, Braves pitcher Tommy Hanson was traded to the Angels for bullpen stud and former closer Jordan Walden. Hanson has been trending in the wrong direction lately and the back-end of the Braves bullpen will surely be a force to be reckoned with.
- According to MLB's drug testing program, 10% of players took adderal this year.
- Other notable non-tenders: Brian Wilson, Jair Jurrjens, Geovany Soto, Brandon Synder, Ryan Sweeny, Jack hannahan, Rafael Perez, Daniel Schlereth and Dan "The Great Pumpkin" Johnson.
- Denard Span was traded to the Washington Nationals, forcing the Phillies to look elsewhere again for a CF. They are currently targeting Angel Pagan. Also, Russell Martin signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates leaving the Yankees scrambling to find a catcher. A.J. Pierzynski seems like a fit with that short porch in right field.
