Badenhop, 29, was acquired from Miami last off-season for minor league catcher Jake Jefferies. In his lone season with the Rays, he made 66 appearances totaling 62.1 innings. He led Rays relievers in inducing double plays, earning two outs in 18% of opportunities, well above the league average of 12%. His 3.55 xFIP was tied for a career high, and he stranded 76.9% of baserunners. According to MLBTradeRumors, he was projected to earn $1.6 million in his third year of arbitration eligibility.
The Rays currently have three relievers under contract for next season totaling $8.3 million: closer Fernando Rodney and righties Joel Peralta and Wade Davis. Jake McGee is one of a handful of potential bullpen options that will have their contracts automatically renewed for 2013. Other pitchers on the 40 man roster include Brandon Gomes, Josh Lueke, Cesar Ramos and Alex Torres.
Mondesi Jr., entering his age-20 season, is the son of former All-Star outfielder Raul Mondesi who played in the majors from 1993-2005. The elder Mondesi is now the mayor of San Cristóbal in the Dominican Republic. Mondesi Jr. was signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2010 for $80,000, and 2012 was his first season playing stateside ball after two years in the Dominican Summer League. For the Helena Brewers in the rookie level Pioneer League, he batted .231/.282/.374 with a 4.7 BB% and 29.2 K%. As the walk and strikeout rates would indicate, he's known as a free swinger and has a bit of power. The 5'10, 180 pound outfielder played mostly right field in 2012 with the occasional game in center, but he does not have the arm his dad had. Then again, not many do. He's the older brother of Adalberto Mondesi, signed by Kansas City for $2,000,000 in July 2011, and he's considered to be a superior prospect compared to Raul. They played against each other in the Pioneer League.
Raul Jr. will likely need to improve his baserunning. In a July game for Helena, he hit what was believed to be a 9th inning game tying home run against Missoula, but he missed home plate, and the game ended on a successful walk-off appeal by the Osprey. You can check out the video on Deadspin.
