I was reading the nice article on the front page about the Rays lack of success developing catching prospects. The thought occured to me, who exactly is the last hitter that the Rays have successfully developed?
I'm sad to say that I can't really remember. I popped through the list below pretty quickly and get left drawing a blank.
Evan - Not really, Evan brought his own talent to the table. Hard for any hitting coaches to take credit for this one.
Zobrist - Not so fast. Zobrist had to bring in an outsider to learn how to hit.
Upton - Really? You call that hitting? BJ devolved into a low average, moderate OBP guy with moderate power from a guy with huge potential
Pena - 1 season doesn't count as developing a hitter.
SRod- nope
Brignac - nope
Navarro, Jaso - nope, nope
Joyce - same guy he was when we traded for him.
The only guys I can think of are DJ, CC and Aubrey Huff.
