The Rays Tank: Hideki Matsui Retires

Justin Sullivan

Godzilla calls it quits

When the baseball world last saw Hideki Matsui he was pinch hitting in the bottom of the 9th inning in a one run game against Seattle. The pop-up to the shortstop would be the last out of the game and of his career, as he announced his retirement yesterday. His time with the Rays was short and uneventful, though he did homer in his first game with the team, which is pretty cool.

In his 34 games as a Ray he hit .147/.214/.221. In seven seasons with the Yankees hit hit .292/.370/.482 and was World Series MVP in 2009. After his tenure in New York he spent a successful year with Anaheim (.820 OPS) followed by a sub-par 2011 with Oakland before giving it one last shot in Tampa Bay. Those who covered Matsui have nothing but nice things to say about him, which isn't a bad way to be remembered. Now that he's retired he'll have plenty of time to catch up on his other great passion in life.

Goodbye, Gozilla. You were the one Yankee I could never bring myself to hate.
