Others have had enough of waiting on Upton. "He's always just showing flashes of what he's capable of," said an American League scout. "The lack of adjustments and the same damn swing every time and knowing how much better he can be just drives you crazy."
Kevin Goldstein talked with front office and scout types asking them if they would rather have Yoenis Cespedes or different currently major leaguers such as Colby Rasmus, Drew Stubbs, and B.J. Upton. The vote when it came to Upton was 5 to 3 in favor of the untested Cuban.

BJ all the way!
BJ running down balls in left center is fun.
His hot streaks, sporadic as they are, make me happy.
Also, the frustrating side of his game just makes his positives more magical.
His game is like an enigma inside a mystery.
BJ adds excellent drama; will he strike out or will he hit an awesome opposite field double?

If the Rays value Cespedes highly, it makes a lot of sense to try to sign him
It is said he would likely need 3 months in AAA to get his game into form which puts him coming up around July 1st. Enough time to evaluate how the season is going and maybe have a better idea of what to do with Upton. Trading him(if that is the case) gets the Rays a couple of good prospects.Rays could keep Upton and have Cespedes ready to make a bigger impact in 2013 but be be able to contribute in RF or DH this year.
I would try to sign Cepedes to a deal similar to Chapman where he gets a five year deal with a nice signing bonus of maybe two million up front with the rest of the signing paid out yearly, over the next 8 or 9 years(at maybe 1.5 a year) for a total signing of about 16 million.. In addition he would get a yearly escalating contract staring at 1 million than going up in small increments(1.5,2, 2, 3 with maybe an 5 million option in the 5th year). That could get a team friendly contract that may total close to 35 million but is paid out over several years without any one big hit. The type of small market, under the radar deal that the Rays could offer with the long term future in mind. Cespedes could still play in a large Cuban market but with maybe less pressure than let’s say, Miami for very good money, if that’s what he’s looking for.
Cepedes seems to be an un-Rays like move
Multiple teams are in on him.
He is not being under valued.
Emotionally, I would rather put money into extending Upton.
I liked BJ’s 2011 season; more please.

Theres no way
that the Rays will be in contention to sign him. too much, too long of a contract, and too risky of a move. the rays will move upton at the trade deadline or will try to sign him to an extension next winter.

Possible that he nets a draft pick
A trade during the season seems only likely if the team is out of contention.

I hope those same "front office types" whatever the shit that means have the same attitude after this season so Beej can come back on a deal that makes sense for both sides

6 yrs, 900K signing bonus, 42M would make sense

No way would I commit that to BJ
Defense will fade. Speed will erode.

That's what happens when you spend all your time focusing on a player's flaws
Focus on what BJ can do and you won’t say stupid things like you’d rather have Cepedes.
The question will become is Upton worth what he could get on the open market?
He won’t be asking for 7 million next season and is likely to get paid upward of 10-12 million a year for 4-5 years from some team in FA. I would think the cost for the Rays to extend him will probably come close to that. The Rays have never paid that much to a player on a long term deal.
In that light, if they don’t feel Upton is worth that, a guy like Cespedes(if they buy into his projections), who might be able to be signed for a team friendly deal(even with the risk), becomes an option, IMO.
The centerfield FA market next offseason
There are a few options for clubs to look at.
That could help keep BJ’s price down some.
The Nationals are threats to over pay him though.

If those GMs commented on DRB, they would receive warnings

Casey Fossum is back in the AL East
MLB 2K7’s Casey Fossum was impossible to hit.
His eephus pitch would beat my old roommate’s Yankees every time.

I hate Upton's bat, but...
I went to the afternoon Rays/Reds game last year with a friend of mine that is a diehard fan of NL teams. He asked me why our CF was playing so shallow. I told him “because he can”. Two innings later, my friend was impressed.
Yes, I am that dufus in the beer-soaked Iwamura jersey. Why do you ask?
Juan Miranda seems like a good bet

He's one year younger
so I would hope BJ would have a better career WAR just by having a huge advantage in time played.

You'd be the favorite most likely.
Taking a proven MLB player.
