Before the Rays signed Carlos Pena, I thought that Brandon Allen was a serious possibility for the then open first base position. I am always skeptical of PCL numbers but they have been solid and he has shown some power at the MLB level in 370 AB spread out through 3 seasons. Now after signing both Pena and Luke Scott, is there a roster spot available for a 26 year old 1B/ DH/ LF making $ 480 K and under team control for the next 6 years ?
Allen`s splits are pretty pronounced in SSS (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=allenbr01&year=Career&t=b) so a platoon situation would not work since Pena and Scott are both LHH as well. This leaves only LF as an option and I don`t think that Brandon Allen > Desmond Jennings vs. RHP.
It seems a shame that there is no room on the roster for Allen when Elliot Johnson holds a 25 man spot but I think that the Rays pass on Allen. Another case of bad timing.
