The Tampa Bay Rays have designated first baseman/outfielder Brandon Allen for assignment, according to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times. The Rays made the move official today after activating Allen from the 15-day disabled list.

Allen appeared in four games for the Rays before hitting the DL with a strained right quadriceps. Over his 13 at-bats with the Rays, Allen went 2-13 with a home run and three RBIs.
Allen started the season with the Oakland Athletics, who acquired the 26-year-old from the Arizona Diamondbacks last July. Before he was designated for assignment by the A’s, Allen had only appeared in three games, going 0-7 over that span.
2011 was Allen’s most extensive stint in the majors. Over his 175 at-bats with the Diamondbacks and A’s Allen hit at a clip of .200/.277/.377 with 17 extra-base hits and 18 RBIs. Allen is a career .268/.355/.488 hitter over nine seasons in the minors.
