The Rays Tank: Goodnight, Pittsburgh

Dilip Vishwanat

Sweethearts of the 2013 postseason no more, as the Pirates lost to the Cardinals 6-1 in St. Louis last night.

Though it didn't wrap up as desired, the Pittsburgh Pirates were quite the story in the majors this season, allowing the franchise to make their first postseason appearance since 1992 and corralling a bandwagon of fans near and far.

They just couldn't defeat Adam Wainwright and the Cardinals last night, allowing St. Louis to better their record to 8-1 in elimination games since 2011, and advance to the NLCS for the third straight year. The Dodgers will head to St. Louis to kick off the series on Saturday.

One final DS game remains in the postseason picture, with the Athletics hosting the Tigers tonight in Oakland, a rematch of the pitching duel from last Saturday: Justin Verlander vs. Sonny Gray. The winner will head to Boston to kick off the ALCS tomorrow.

- The media wasted zero time in asking, "Where will David Price end up this offseason?" with Price responding that it's "something [he's] prepared himself for." Expect a breakdown of potential landing spots, the type of prospects the Rays would require, etc. coming soon.

- Our own Gareth Rees got some love in Jonah Keri's fantastic baseball dictionary on Grantland, with his photoshopped masterpiece of a domed Fenway making an appearance under "Dome Sweet Dome." The list is a solid reference guide, with everything from complex analytical terms to slang and sayings old and new. Definitely worth your time.

- Hal Bodley of MLB.com wrote a piece looking at the brand of baseball the Rays have developed over the past few years, making it to the postseason four of the last six and forcing wins when they seemed most unexpected.

- Tangotiger expressed their surprise that Joe Maddon's continual deploy of pitchers on Tuesday night doesn't occur more often in September baseball.

- Delmon Young wants to return to the Rays in 2014, while Joel Peralta expressed desires of seeing Fernando Rodney back in a Rays unfiorm.

- Jay Jaffe broke took a look at the blockbuster Dodgers/Red Sox trade that has resulted in helping both teams with their success this season.

- We're all well aware that Shane Victorino tends to get hit by a lot of pitches, so Fangraphs took a look at the location of the pitches hitting Victorino.
