Down on the farm April 18: Segovia homers again

Pitchers are having a hard time keeping Alejandro Segovia in the ballpark - Jim Donten

Richie Shaffer also picked up his first home run of the season

The organization got back to its winning ways with a 3-0 record in the minors.

Class-A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (5-8) ***Featured game of the day***

Charlotte scored four runs in the first three innings en route to a 5-2 win over St. Lucie. All of the more interesting prospects in the Stone Crabs lineup contributed, highlighted by Richie Shaffer hitting his first home run of the season in the third inning. Two innings earlier, Jake Hager led off the game with a double, and after he was inexplicably sacrificed over to third two batters into the game, Drew Vettleson brought him home with a single. Vettleson finished with two hits and a walk. Meanwhile, Jesse Hahn had another outstanding three inning start; he struck out six and only allowed one hit. Jake Floethe relieved him and was okay, allowing two runs on five hits but also striking out four and walking none. Lenny Linsky picked up his first save of the season.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (9-5)

After a bumpy first inning, J.D. Martin settled in to lead Durham to a 6-2 win over Charlotte. Three batters into the game, Martin, making his second start since Mike Montgomery went on the DL with a forearm injury, allowed a two run home run to Steve Tolleson but would cruise through the rest of his night. He finished with seven strikeouts and the two runs allowed in 5.1 innings on five hits and two walks. Durham would quickly respond with all six of their runs before the fourth inning, and they owe a lot of it to Tim Beckham. He drove in three runs on two hits on the night, including his first double of the year. It's a day that ends in 'y', and that means Hak-Ju Lee reached base three more times. Vince Belnome added three hits.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (7-6)

A three-run second inning proved to be just enough for Montgomery in their 3-2 win over Mobile. Mark Thomas drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly after Cameron Seitzer doubled and Todd Glaesmann singled to start the inning, and their final two runs were brought in on a two out triple by Shawn O'Malley. O'Malley would be Montgomery's only batter with two hits. The Biscuits may have been fortunate because Merrill Kelly was not sharp. He only allowed two runs, but he walked four in five innings and only threw 57% of his pitches for strikes. The bullpen picked him up though, and three relievers combined to throw four innings while only yielding one baserunner. Juan Sandoval recorded the last four outs for a save.
