Do you know what feels really really good after a losing streak by the Rays? A nice organizational sweep. On Friday, the Rays and all their minor league affiliates that played (Durham's game was postponed) were victorious.
Triple-A Durham Bulls (10-5)
The game was postponed due to weather.
Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (8-7)
The Biscuits accomplished an interesting and unusual feat in their 16-7 victory over Mobile: they scored more runs that they had hits. And it was not one of those three run games with the one hit a three run home run. The Biscuits collected 12 hits on the night, but also collected eight walks and benefited from several defensive miscues by Mobile. Both Robby Price and Riccio Torrez reached base four times, with Price collecting a home run and Torrez a double. Neither Victor Mateo nor the recently promoted Andrew Bellatti were particularly effective on the pitching side, but they didn't need to be with the way the offense was rolling. A 12 run third inning below the game open early for Montgomery.
Class-A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (6-9)
Behind a terrific start from Ryan Carpenter, the Charlotte Stone Crabs edged the Jupiter Hammerheads 2-1. Carpenter only allowed one run in seven dominant innings, striking out ten batters while only walking one and surrendering four hits. Shay Crawford and Austin Hubbard sealed the win by pitching a scoreless inning apiece. Altogether, the Stone Crabs pitchers struck out fourteen batters while walking only one. Richie Shaffer and Kes Carter drove in the two runs for the Stone Crabs. Carter and Jake Hager were the only batters to reach base multiple times.
Class-A Bowling Green Hot Rods (11-3)
The Bowling Green Hot Rods continued their impressive start to the season with a 5-2 win over the Dayton Dragons. Dylan Floro received the start and pitched five innings of two run ball. Brandon Henderson and Nick Sawyer followed in relief. The offense collected 14 hits on the night with Thomas Coyle leading the way with three hits, including a double. The Hot Rods led for the entire game, scoring three in the second inning before tacking runs on in the sixth and eighth innings.
Star of the Day: Ryan Carpenter continues his impressive run of starts to begin the season.
Goat of the Day: With the organizational sweep, I'll pass on this award.
