Down on the farm May 20: Pitching dominates

The Rays have really been extending their pitching prospects lately - Jim Donten

Rays pitchers combined for shutouts in three of their five games Sunday

Those efforts were highlighted by Taylor Guerrieri who threw a career high six innings.

Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (27-15) ***Featured games of the day***

In the resumption of a suspended game earlier this month, Bowling Green dropped a 5-1 decision to West Michigan. The game had been suspended after only half an inning, and it happened to be Reinaldo Lopez's turn in the rotation again. The Whitecaps scored a single run in each of their first three turns at bat Sunday, and that would prove to be more than enough. Lopez finished with four runs allowed in 5.1 innings on seven hits and two walks while striking out three. With two outs in the third inning, the Hot Rods scored their only run of the game on a Tommy Coyle triple to score Granden Goetzman. That was Bowling Green's only extra base hit out of seven on the day. Tyler Goeddel struck out four times.

In the regularly scheduled game, Taylor Guerrieri set a career high in innings pitched in Bowling Green's 8-0 win. For the second straight start, Guerrieri exited without allowing a run, this time through six innings. He struck out three, walked one and allowed one hit. The Hot Rods scored a pair of runs in the third inning, but it wouldn't be until the fifth inning until they really blew it open. With one out and Leonardo Reginatto on second base after a steal, seven straight Hot Rods reached base on six hits and one walk and produced the final six runs of the game. Joey Rickard led the team by reaching base three times and hitting one of Bowling Green's four doubles. Despite hitting into a double play in the big fifth inning, Reginatto had two hits and stole a base.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (26-18)

Durham's game ended two innings prematurely due to rain, and they were unable to make a comeback in their 3-2 loss. J.D. Martin will be credited with a complete game as a result despite only pitching seven innings. He allowed all three runs, two earned, on nine hits and a walk while striking out seven. The Bulls could only manage four hits, but they also drew five walks against Orioles minor leaguer Zach Britton trying to work his way back to the majors. All four hits were singles, including one by Wil Myers. Myers and Mike Fontenot each reached base twice.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (22-21)

With a three run inning and dominating pitching, Montgomery topped Huntsville by a 3-0 score Sunday. Merrill Kelly was one of several Rays pitchers to deliver effective performances yesterday, firing 6.2 scoreless innings with five strikeouts and only three hits and two walks issued. C.J. Riefenhauser and Juan Sandoval retired the final seven batters of the game in order to complete the shutout. After two quick groundouts in the third inning, the Biscuits mounted a rally. Kevin Kiermaier doubled, and Robby Price walked to put two runners on. A single, double and single hit by Mikie Mahtook, Cameron Seitzer and Todd Glaesmann respectively each scored runs.

Class-A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (17-25)

Felipe Rivero got himself into trouble, but he also worked his way out of it against a tough team in Charlotte's 2-0 win over Ft. Myers. He struck out four and worked through 5.2 innings, but he allowed six hits and walked three, only retiring the Miracle 1-2-3 in one inning. Fortunately, they went 0-9 with runners in scoring position and left 13 runners on base. Richie Shaffer's two out single in the first inning provided the only run the Stone Crabs would need, but they would tack on another for good measure five innings later. Shaffer had two of Charlotte's six hits, and Ryan Brett stole his first base of the year.

Star of the day- Guerrieri has two straight starts without allowing a run.

Goat of the day- Reinaldo Lopez allowed 50% of the runs for the organization Sunday, very ugly performance.
