Down on the farm July 10: Belnome homers

Kirby Yates looks thrilled. - US PRESSWIRE

Vince Belnome's seventh homer of the season tied up the game late in an eventual Durham win

Princeton's foray into extra innings was not as successful as Durham's.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (58-35)

Durham's bullpen threw five scoreless innings in a 12 inning, 4-3 win over Charlotte. After J.D. Martin exited having allowed three runs on eight hits in seven innings with six strikeouts, Kirby Yates started the bullpen effort with five strikeouts in two innings. Frank De Los Santos, making his first appearance with the Bulls in two months, Jeff Beliveau and Cory Wade each pitched a scoreless inning each. In the 12th, Ryan Roberts delivered the eventual game-winning run with a double to score Brandon Guyer. In the eighth inning, the Bulls were down 3-1, but Charlotte made the mistake of pitching to Vince Belnome who hit a game-tying two run homer. Belnome drove in three runs on two hits. The top four hitters in the lineup, Guyer, Tim Beckham, Roberts and Belnome, combined for nine hits and reached base 11 times.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (9-11)

Montgomery was off.

Class-A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (12-7)

A big inning late in the game gave Charlotte a 5-1 win over St. Lucie. After two quick outs in the seventh, two singles and a walk loaded the bases for the Stone Crabs. After Kes Carter drove in two with a single, Luke Bailey got credit for a steal of home on a double steal with Kes Carter. Ryan Brett singled home the fourth run of the inning to put Charlotte up 5-1. Jake Partridge got the spot start and pitched four scoreless innings, but the big story on the pitching side was the Rays organization debut of Ramon Ramirez. He allowed the lone run of the game in three innings of work on two hits and a walk while striking out four batters. Brett had two of Charlotte's six hits, all singles.

Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (12-7)

Bowling Green was off.

Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (13-10)

Hudson Valley's offense stumbled again in a 10 inning, 2-1 loss to Vermont in a morning contest. James Harris singled home Granden Goetzman in the fifth inning, but those two hits were among only four the Renegades were able to get during the game. In the 10th, Wilfredo Soriano led off with a double against Eli Echarry, and a sac bunt and sac fly got him home to win the game. Aaron Griffin started and pitched well despite allowing a solo home run. He finished with just one run allowed on four hits and no walks in six innings with three strikeouts. Former first round pick Dylan Covey struck out five in four scoreless innings for Vermont. Hudson Valley went down 1-2-3 in six of the 10 innings.

Rookie Princeton Rays (4-13)

Things were going okay for Princeton until they allowed seven runs in the 11th inning in a 10-3 loss to Pulaski. Oscar Armenta was called on to pitch the 11th and promptly allowed a leadoff home run. The Mariners obviously wouldn't stop there though. They would collect six more hits in the inning, including a three run homer with two outs, and Armenta would be charged with all seven runs. For some reason they also laid down a sac bunt in the middle of the inning. Despite only allowing one run, starter Jorge Rodriguez lasted just 3.2 innings, striking out two and allowing four hits and two walks. Elias Torres and Hunter Lockwood each had two hit games, and Lockwood's included the first professional home run of his career. Pulaski reliever Eddie Campbell struck out 10 in five innings.

Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (6-8)

The GCL Rays received good pitching and eventually walked off with a 3-2 win over the GCL Twins. Thomas Milone, Ryan Henley and Erick Vasquez all reached base with one out to load them up, and Clayton Henning hit a sac fly to score Milone to win the game. Perhaps the big story of the game was Grayson Garvin's return. The former first round pick hadn't pitched since June 11th last year because of elbow problems, and Tuesday he struck out two batters and allowed a home run before leaving the game. Three Rays relievers combined to only allow one more run in 8.1 innings, but it could've been worse. Christopher Crisostomo walked eight in 4.2 innings but only allowed one run. Three Rays had two hits each including Milone and Kean Wong.
