Trade Deadline 2013: Rays acquire Jesse Crain from White Sox

USA TODAY Sports

If healthy, Crain will provide another strong option in the back of the Rays 'pen.

The Rays have acquired relief ace Jesse Crain from the White Sox, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.

According to Joel Sherman, the deal is for "future considerations."

On July 3, the White Sox placed Crain on the 15-day DL, retroactive to June 30, according to MLBTR, so he is eligible to be activated now.

Before going on the DL, Crain was having a fine season, striking out 11.29 batters per nine innings while only walking 2.70 per nine. If healthy, he would immediately slide into the back of the Rays bullpen, and alleviate the pressure on setup man Joel Peralta, one of the most often used relievers in the league.

Crain is in the final year of his contract, so this is purely a short-term aggressive move by the Rays front office (although the cost is likely to be very low).
