Bowling Green picked up the only win of the day.
Triple-A Durham Bulls (55-34)
Four third inning runs for Norfolk put Durham in a hole they couldn't get out of in a 5-1 loss. In that rough inning, Jake Odorizzi allowed five hits and walked a batter, including an RBI single from former Bull Russ Canzler. The former International League MVP had three hits total. Another former Bull, Jason Pridie, once traded by the Devil Rays for Brendan Harris, would later hit a solo home run to extend Norfolk's lead to 5-0. Ryan Roberts' infield single in the bottom half of the seventh drove in Durham's only run. Odorizzi finished with the four runs allowed in six innings on seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Tim Beckham picked up a couple hits.
Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (8-8)
Montgomery was postponed.
Class-A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (9-6)
Charlotte couldn't get out of a big, early hole in a 7-4 loss to Palm Beach. The hole was courtesy of Parker Markel whose rough season continued getting worse. He allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks with no strikeouts in three innings of work. The Cardinals would lead 7-0 until the eighth inning when the Stone Crabs would pile up all four of their runs. Drew Vettleson and Ben Kline each had RBI singles, and Curt Casali doubled home a pair of runs. Apparently in the ninth, Willie Argo doubled before Kes Carter allegedly sacrificed him to third base. If this is truly what happened, I may give up on baseball forever. Maybe he was bunting for a hit, but I'm not sure how much more that makes sense. Hopefully an eyewitness account can confirm that there was no sacrifice bunt down three in the ninth inning. Vettleson, Argo and Ryan Brett all had two hits.
Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (10-6)
A three run 10th inning broke a 1-1 tie in Bowling Green's 4-1 win over Dayton. An error and poor play on a sac bunt helped the Hot Rods load the bases with no outs, and after Tommy Coyle failed to get a run home, the Dragons returned the favor with a wild pitch to put Bowling Green ahead. Tyler Goeddel drove in two more with a single to extend the lead to three. Reinaldo Lopez had a decent start, allowing a run in six innings on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts, and Marcus Jensen and Jose Molina combined for four scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Justin O'Conner had three hits and walked once. Leonardo Reginatto also had three hits and stole a base.
Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (11-8)
Hudson Valley's bats were silent again in a 6-0 loss to Staten Island. The Renegades were able to collect nine hits including two doubles, but they only had one hit with a runner in scoring position that obviously did not score a run. Ariel Soriano and Omar Narvaez each had two hits. Starter Ben Griset stumbled through only 3.2 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts. In 2013, Oscar Hernandez deciding to add base stealing to his repertoire. His sixth steal puts him in a tie for fourth in the New York Penn League after only stealing three bases in eight attempts his first three professional seasons.
Rookie Princeton Rays (4-9)
A three run first inning sunk Princeton in a 5-1 game one loss to Burlington. Although the third run that inning was unearned, Nolan Gannon certainly struggled early, walking the leadoff batter and allowing consecutive doubles to open the game with a 2-0 Royals lead. Gannon settled in though and would only allow one more batter to reach base via hit the final four innings of his outing. He finished with the three runs allowed on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts in five innings. David Garcia's solo home run in the sixth inning accounted for Princeton's only run, and he had two of the team's three hits for the game.
Five runs was the magic number for Burlington again in a game two 5-4 loss for Princeton. Once again in the first inning, back to back doubles allowed the Royals to score a pair of runs in the first inning, but the Rays immediately answered in the top of the second with two runs of their own on an error and run-scoring groundout. After starter Geisel De La Cruz was removed with just one inning of work, Burlington kept the pressure on by scoring a run against both Clayton Crum and Josh Kimborowicz. A two run seventh inning for the Rays that included a two out RBI single by Hunter Lockwood would tie the game, but Darren Fischer allowed a walkoff home run for the Royals to complete the sweep. Chad Nacapoy was the only Ray to reach base more than once.
Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (4-6)
The GCL Rays' game was suspended and will be resumed today.
Star of the day- Goeddel had a solid game for Bowling Green that included two stolen bases.
Goat of the day- Starts like this are part of the reason Markel was not on my mid-season top 30.
