Rays down on the farm August 13: Bowling Green can't preserve no-no

Kevin Brandt couldn't have been much better Monday - Jim Donten

The Hot Rods were five outs away from a no-hitter, but they ended up losing

Charlotte prevented the off-day sweep with a tight win.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (76-47)

Durham was off.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (23-27)

In the resumption of the suspended game, Montgomery couldn't hold a tight lead and fell 3-2 to Tennessee. Before rain disrupted the game Sunday, Enny Romero allowed a run in two innings. With Jim Patterson in relief to resume the game, Curt Casali was able to score a pair of runs to give the Biscuits the lead, but Patterson would run into trouble in the sixth. A Javier Baez solo home run tied the game, and in the seventh, Patterson recorded two outs before allowing a single and RBI double to cough up the lead. Patterson allowed the two runs on five hits and a walk in 4.2 innings with three strikeouts. Casali had two hits and reached base three times.

Montgomery fell way behind early and couldn't recover in a game two 9-4 loss. Marquis Fleming got hammered in the first inning, allowing a six run frame that included a pair of Smokies home runs. He threw a 1-2-3 inning in the second, but Tennessee once again used extra base hits in the third to add on more runs. Fleming allowed three runs on three doubles before being removed for Austin Hubbard with one out. Seven of the nine runs were earned, and three Biscuits pitchers combined to strike out no batters. All four Montgomery runs came in the fourth inning. Todd Glaesmann was hit with the bases loaded, and Robby Price delivered a single after that. The other two runs scored on a throwing error and groundout. Mikie Mahtook had two hits, and Casali reached base two more times.

Class-A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (26-20)

Charlotte erased two deficits and went on to beat Bradenton 5-4 in 10 innings. Down 2-0 in the fifth, Jake Hager tied the game with a two out double, but Matt Ramsey couldn't secure the shutdown inning and allowed a run in the sixth. In the seventh, Drew Vettleson had a two run double himself, but Ramsey couldn't hold their new lead in the eighth inning. In the bottom of the 10th, a day after flying out into an unfortunate game ending triple play, Jeff Malm hit a walkoff single that scored Kes Carter. Felipe Rivero struck out five in five innings, but he allowed two runs on six hits and three walks. Richie Shaffer and Alejandro Segovia had two hit games.

Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (29-22)

Bowling Green was five outs away from a no-hitter, but they ended up losing 3-2 to Lake County. Kevin Brandt was making his low-A debut and couldn't have been much better, walking just one and striking out three in six no-hit innings. The Hot Rods scored a run each in the fourth and sixth innings to get out to a 2-0 lead, but they were unable to deliver any insurance runs. Andrew Hanse struck out four in two innings of work, but he was the Hot Rods pitcher that lost the no-hit bid. Marcus Jensen was called on to preserve the 2-0 lead, but he was only able to record one out while allowing three runs on four hits. Jeremy Lucas plated two runs on a walkoff double to give the Captains the win. Andrew Toles had two hits.

Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (26-27)

Hudson Valley is at their All-Star break.

Rookie Princeton Rays (14-36)

Princeton was postponed.

Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (18-26)

A relentless GCL Red Sox offense sunk the GCL Rays in their resumed game 8-4 loss. In the bottom of the second, Nick Ciuffo's RBI groundout gave the Rays the lead, and a Jose Paez inside the park home run an inning later broke a 1-1 tie, but it was all downhill from there. The Red Sox scored in every inning from the third inning on, and the Rays were unable to get back in the game. Christopher Crisostomo allowed most of the damage, giving up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits and two walks with one strikeout in four innings. He pitched in relief of Wilking Rodriguez, making his third rehab appearance. Rodriguez walked a batter in a scoreless inning. Cristian Toribio had three hits, and he was one of two Rays with two extra base hits, the other being Alexander Simon.

In the originally scheduled game, two late runs weren't enough in the Rays' 3-2 loss. After Wilking Rodriguez made another rehab appearance, Freddy Alvarez allowed runs on a wild pitch and groundout in the second inning. A throwing error in the sixth allowed the Red Sox to extend their lead to three, but the Rays answered back in the bottom half of the inning with a bases loaded walk and run-scoring groundout. With the tying run at third base and two outs, Thomas Milone popped up to end the inning. In his rehab appearance, Rodriguez struck out one and allowed two hits in a scoreless inning. Alvarez struck out six and allowed two runs in four innings. Taylor Motter made a rehab appearance too, collecting three hits including two doubles.
