Rays Down On The Farm: August 17

USA TODAY Sports

A recap of the minor league action.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (78-49)

Durham took advantage of several defensive miscues by Gwinnett to win 5-4. Only one of Durham's runs was earned thanks to four errors by the Gwinnett defenders. Matt Buschmann went 6.1 solid innings, allowing four runs, two of which were earned. Three relievers pitched the final 2.2 innings to seal the victory. The Bulls only collected four hits but they managed to walk ten times.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (60-64)

The slumping Biscuits collected four times as many hits as the Generals (eight to two), but in the end they lost 2-1. Enny Romero's stuff was electric as ever as he struck out nine batters in 6.0 innings while only allowing one hit. However, he allowed a run thanks to five walks. Braulio Lara allowed the other run in relief. Shawn O'Malley had two hits while Curt Casali and Mayo Acosta both went 1-4 with a double.

Advanced Class-A Charlotte Stone Crabs (57-60)

The Charlotte Stone Crabs lost to the Palm Beach Cardinals 3-2 on Friday night. After Charlotte scored in the first and the fourth inning, Palm Beach scored two runs off of Jacob Partridge in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, back to back hits gave the Cardinals the lead. The Stone Crabs failed to capitalize on their opportunities, leaving nine runners on base.

Class-A Bowling Green Hot Rods (70-52)

A terrific start by Jordan Harrison and some timely hitting late gave the Hot Rods a 4-0 victory. Harrison went 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and two walks while fanning three. Justin O'Conner hit a solo home run while Marty Gannt hit a two run double in the ninth, one of two on the night for him.

Short Season Class-A Hudson Valley Renegades (27-29)

Just when it looked like the Renegades would find a way to win, a two run bottom of the tenth inning for Lowell handed Hudson Valley a 7-6 defeat. In a back and forth game that was tied 5-5 after nine innings, Hudson Valley pieced together a run in the top of the tenth inning. However, Cory Jordan couldn't close out the game, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk. Aaron Griffin was the starter; he went 5.0 innings and allowed one run. Anthony Tzamtis allowed four runs in 1.2 innings. Johnny Field and Julian Morillo both had three hits.

Rookie Princeton Rays (16-38)

A tough season for Princeton only reached new lows in a double header loss on Friday. In the first game, Princeton lost to Bluefield 6-3. Josh Kimborowicz allowed four runs in relief to give Bluefield the advantage. Jesus Araiza reached base three times for the Rays.

In the second game, Princeton once again lost, this time by the score of 13-8. Nolan Gannon's brutal season only worsened Friday as he could only record one out in a disastrous first inning in which he allowed six runs, all earned. He allowed two hits, walked two batters, and hit two batters. Stepan Halivek pitched the rest of the game, but he allowed seven runs of his own. Four different Rays collected multiple hits in a rare strong offensive outing.

Rookie GCL Rays (22-27)

Solid outings from Jose Castillo and Jose Mujica propelled the Rays to a 6-2 victory. Castillo pitched the first three frames, surrendering one run on five hits. Jose Mujica picked up the win for his three scoreless innings in which he allowed a hit and a walk while striking out two. Riley Unroe went 2-3 with a double while Ryan Henley added two doubles of his own.

Star of the Day: Jordan Harrison was one of the few good performers on the day.

Goat of the Day: Nolan Gannon had a lot of promise coming out of the 2012 draft, but his season has been a complete mess.
