Rays sign Delmon Young, claim David DeJesus?

USA TODAY Sports

The Rays just dropped bombs.

Twitter is afire with rumros the the Rays have laid a claim on David DeJesus on waivers, and just signed our old friend Delmon Young. We'll update as news breaks.

For more on Delmon Young, and his fit with this current Rays roster, read here.

UPDATE: 12:55 PM

Delmon Young has signed a minor league deal, for the time being. According to Ken Rosenthal, he will report to Double-A Montgomery, as was his preference.

With Luke Scott's injured back, and ignoring Sam Fuld's small sample size, Delmon Young would have the 7th highest wOBA (.337) and wRC+ (113) against left handed pitching on this Rays roster.

Meanwhile, David DeJesus's value would come against right handed pitching. He owns a .346 wOBA and 117 wRC+ vRHP this season, but he comes at a price. He is still owed ~$1M to finish the season, and his contract holds a $1.5M buy out for next season, should the Rays not be interested in his $6.5M contract for next season.

UPDATE: 1:10 PM

As Michael Weber shared on twitter, this might be the reason Delmon wants to stay out of Durham:

Jokes and anger management issues aside, as DBullsFan mentioned below, Montgomery is Delmon's hometown.

UPDATE: 2:11 PM

Per Marc Topkin:

Young's agent, Joel Wolfe, said they had several teams interested but the Rays were definitely their first choice. "He was excited,'' Young said. "We had several offers but he told me to wait. There was no question in his mind he wanted to come here and he wanted to play for Joe.''
