Rays down on the farm August 6: Thompson can't complete game

Monday's start is the highlight of Jake Thompson's inconsistent season - Jim Donten

The former second round pick was one out away from a CGSHO

A bit of a quieter day yesterday with two affiliates off. Oscar Hernandez, Ariel Soriano, Darryl George and Kevin Brandt will be headed to next week's New York-Penn league All-Star Game.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (73-44)

Durham couldn't get on the board until the ninth inning, and by then it was too late in their 4-2 loss to Rochester. It's the second straight game their offense has slumped, and they combined for just three runs in the series finale against Gwinnett and series opener against the Red Wings. Starter Matt Buschmann only allowed one run in 5.2 innings, but he wasn't sharp, giving up five hits and walking four, although he did strike out nine. In the ninth, Rochester conceded the first run on a bases loaded groundout by Jason Bourgeois, and Leslie Anderson's RBI single after that kept the pressure on. An error allowed them to load the bases with one out, Chris Gimenez and Jesus Flores both made outs to end the game. Vince Belnome reached base three times, and Tim Beckham did so twice.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (21-23)

Montgomery's bullpen once again made things interesting late in their 2-1 win over Chattanooga. The story of the game though was definitely starter Jake Thompson. One out away from his first career complete game, a double that brought the tying run to the plate chased him from the game. After Braulio Lara allowed the inherited run to score, Juan Sandoval came on for the cheap save. Thompson was charged with the run on five hits and no walks with five strikeouts. The Biscuits scored their first run of the game in the second inning, but it was Cameron Seitzer's fourth inning home run against Zach Lee that proved to be the deciding run.

Class-A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (24-17)

Charlotte fell behind 1-0 in the first inning, but they proceeded to score eight unanswered runs on their way to an 8-1 win over Brevard County. Sean Bierman allowed the run in the first, but he worked his way out of a bases loaded jam and cruised the rest of the way, finishing with just the one run allowed on four hits and no walks in six innings with four strikeouts. Luke Bailey's two run single in the second gave the Stone Crabs the lead for good, but it was a five run fourth that really put the game away. Bailey drove in another run that inning, and Jake Hager had a two run single to finish it off. Kes Carter's double was the only one of Charlotte's 12 hits that went for extra bases, and they also walked six times. Willie Argo reached base three times and was one of four Stone Crabs to have a two hit game.

Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (27-17)

Bowling Green came up short in a marathon 8-7 loss in 15 innings. In his second inning of work, Austin Pruitt allowed a leadoff single. The runner then made it to third base thanks to a steal and throwing error, and he came home to score on a sac fly. Prior to Pruitt's entrance, Ryan Garton worked the longest of any Hot Rods pitcher on the night, throwing four scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Starter Blake Snell lasted just 3.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks with six strikeouts. Bowling Green took a 7-4 lead in the bottom of the eighth with a three run inning, but Marcus Jensen allowed consecutive two out home runs to let the Silver Hawks back in the game. Earlier on, Joey Rickard's fourth inning two run home run gave Bowling Green a 4-3 lead. Rickard was one of four Hot Rods to reach base three times. In long games, there's always That Guy, and Monday's was Justin O'Conner. O'Conner went 0/7 with four strikeouts.

Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (25-23)

Hudson Valley was off.

Rookie Princeton Rays (11-32)

Princeton was off.

Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (17-22)

The GCL Rays lineup was shut down in a 2-0 loss to the GCL Twins. The Rays only picked up five hits, two of which came off the bat of Riley Unroe. They didn't draw any walks, and they combined for 10 strikeouts. Grayson Garvin made his sixth rehab appearance with the Rays, and it was his third straight scoreless outing. He struck out three in three innings, only allowing three hits and walking none. Jose Castillo allowed a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, finishing with the two runs allowed in three innings. Jose Mujica threw two scoreless innings.
