Myers injured his wrist on the final play of Friday night's 3-2 loss as he and Desmond Jennings collided on an A.J. Pierzynski double in RCF. Jennings slid underneath Myers who toppled over and landed on his wrist. Although he was able to get up and throw the ball in, Myers noticed there was some discomfort and pain as he walked into the clubhouse.
HIs wrist has been in a plastic brace since Friday night. Myers flew back to Tampa and will undergo some tests to evaluate how serious of a sprain he suffered. If there's a silver lining to the injury, it's that Myers could benefit from some time off. The 2013 AL Rookie of the Year has been going through a sophomore slump these first two months of the season with a .227 AVG., 5 HR, 25 RBI and 52 SO.
As a corresponding move, the Rays recalled 1B/OF Jerry Sands from the Durham Bulls (AAA). Sands, a right-handed batter, can bring some much needed power to a struggling offense. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Sands has slugged nine homers and driven in 36 runs in 54 games at the AAA level this season.
Sands is batting cleanup this afternoon for the Rays as they look to avoid a second consecutive three-game sweep.
