An interesting note on competitive balance round B pick Brent Honeywell:
So this dude for Princeton throws a screwball. Awesome.
— Josh Norris (@jnorris427) July 9, 2014
Hunter Lockwood is an interesting player. His power was legitimate as an amateur, it was legitimate last year when he led the Appalachian League in extra base hits, and it is now with eight home runs and 13 extra base hits in 24 games. In 102 plate appearances, he has 27 strikeouts and four walks, so there's still something to work on. He turns 22 after the season, so he's right around the average age for the New York Penn League.
Triple-A Durham Bulls (50-44)
Durham was postponed.
Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (10-10)
Montgomery was off.
Class-A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (5-15)
A relentless Jupiter offense sunk Charlotte in their 8-4 loss to the Hammerheads. Jupiter didn't have a single big inning, but they gradually built up their lead by scoring in the first six innings and seven total. Starter Jordan Harrison is probably fortunate he didn't allow more, and he finished with four runs allowed on six hits and four walks in 3.2 innings with five strikeouts. Marcus Jensen allowed three runs (two earned).
While the Hammerheads scored methodically, the Stone Crabs got all four of their runs in one inning. Jonathan Quinonez and Luke Bailey had RBI hits, and Yunel Escobar reached on an error that scored the third run. Escobar scored their final run of the game. Escobar went 0/3 with a strikeout and played five innings at shortstop before being replaced by Leonardo Reginatto. Quinonez and Bailey each had two hits.
Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (7-12)
Bowling Green erased an early 3-0 lead in their 4-3 win over West Michigan. Kean Wong led off the ninth in the single, and Johnny Field followed that up with a walkoff two run homer. The Hot Rods scored their first two runs in the fourth inning on an Oscar Hernandez groundout and two out Ty Young single. Young and Field had three hits, and Wong had two. Fields' home run was the only extra base hit out of 10 for Bowling Green.
Bruedlin Suero allowed two runs in the first, and after two 1-2-3 innings, he lost his control in the fourth. He allowed a two out single and then walked three consecutive batters to make it a 3-0 game. He finished with three runs (two earned) allowed on four hits and three walks in four innings with five strikeouts. Willie Gabay provided great long relief with four strikeouts in three scoreless innings, and Brad Schreiber finished the game with two more scoreless innings.
Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (19-7)
Hunter Lockwood's two home runs powered Hudson Valley in their first game out of the division, an 11-3 Renegades win over Mahoning Valley. It was a first inning single by Lockwood though that got Hudson Valley a 2-0 lead. In the fourth inning, he hit his first home run of the game, a three run shot that capped off a big five run inning. After another two run inning in the sixth, Lockwood's two run homer in the seventh made it an eight run game. Lockwood nearly outhit the entire Scrappers roster with five hits to their six. Jace Conrad had four hits, and Casey Gillaspie had three.
Aside from allowing a solo home run in the second inning, Oscar Armenta had one of the best starts of his season. After allowing that home run, he would only allow one more batter to reach, and he was erased on a double play. Armenta finished with the run allowed on three hits in six innings with four strikeouts and no walks. Gerardo Reyes struck out four in two innings, but he was also charged with two runs.
Rookie Princeton Rays (11-8)
Nic Wilson's two solo home run and three pitchers led Princeton to a 3-0 win over Burlington. Wilson's first home run came in the fourth inning after Hec Montes reached on an error, and his second was in his next at-bat two innings later. He wasn't involved in any of the run scoring, but Riley Unroe reached base five times with three singles and two walks.
Brent Honeywell made his second career start, and it was just as good as the first. He went three innings this time, struck out three, walked one and only allowed one hit. Damion Carroll followed that up with a pair of strikeouts in two innings, and Roel Ramirez struck out one in four innings to finish the game.
Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (11-5)
The GCL Rays were postponed.
Star of the day- Lockwood and Wilson both hitting two home runs is impressive.
Goat of the day- Harrison's second start with Charlotte wasn't as good as his first.
