For two straight outings, Guerrieri has thrown three innings. He's recorded 28 outs for the GCL Rays so far. 10 of them are strikeouts, and 17 of them are groundouts.
How many innings does he have to be able to throw before he gets bumped up to Charlotte for some tougher action? Last year, they threw Jesse Hahn out there to go three innings and shower for a month, so if they feel like he's ready to get high-A batters out, maybe it won't be long.
Triple-A Durham Bulls (56-48)
Durham was suspended.
Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (19-15)
At one point, Montgomery scored six straight runs in their 6-4 win over Chattanooga. Jeff Malm's second inning single tied the game at one, and the Biscuits took the lead with a three run fourth. Kes Carter executed a squeeze bunt to make it a 2-1 game, and Ryan Brett drove in two runs later in the inning. In the fifth, Alejandro Segovia started a two run inning with a solo home run. Despite not starting the game, Segovia had two hits and reached base three times. Ryan Brett had three hits.
Grayson Garvin came up an out shy of reaching five innings pitched for the second straight start. He settled in after allowing a first inning run and at one point retired nine in a row. He threw a lot of pitches though (94), and he exited having allowed that run on four hits and two walks in 4.2 innings with four strikeouts. Santiago Garrido and Andrew Bellatti combined to allow three runs in relief, but the offense had built up enough of a lead to hang on.
Class-A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (13-20)
Charlotte had to go against a brief big leaguer, and they came out on top in their 2-1 win over Dunedin. Sean Nolin is working his way back to the upper minors, and the Stone Crabs were able to scrape together a couple runs against him. Down 1-0 in the fifth, Marty Gantt and Granden Goetzman drew walks, and with two outs, Leonardo Reginatto drove them both home to take the lead. Patrick Leonard had two hits.
Reinaldo Lopez was pretty sharp, and the Blue Jays could only manage a run in the fourth against him. Dwight Smith Jr. led off the inning with a double, and a single brought him home. He allowed nine hits in 7.2 innings with three strikeouts and a walk, but he was able to limit the damage to just one run.
Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (14-18)
Two first inning runs held up in Bowling Green's 2-1 win over Cedar Rapids. Thanks to two throwing errors, Juniel Querecuto and Ty Young were able to score with two outs, and that would be all the offense the Hot Rods needed. They would have more chances to score, like when they loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but no one could come through. Querecuto and Elias Torres each reached base three times.
Chris Kirsch really didn't pitch well, but he limited the damage to just one Kernel run. Despite walking five, he somehow managed to only allow that run in 5.1 innings, along with three hits and five strikeouts. The bullpen did pitch well, and Brad Schreiber and Stone Speer combined to throw 3.2 scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (29-11)
Hudson Valley piled up eight runs in the second and third innings on their way to a 9-3 win over Lowell. The Spinners took a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Renegades opened the top of the second with four straight singles to take the lead. Casey Gillaspie topped off the five run inning with a two out, two run single. They added three in the third, and the rout was on. Five Renegades had multi-hit games, including Braxton Lee and Clayton Henning. They both reached base four times.
After allowing that first inning run, starter Chris Pike settled in for an okay outing. Lowell got eight hits off Pike, but they were only able to string enough together to score a single run in the first and third innings. He finished with the two runs allowed in five innings with five strikeouts and no walks. Ryan Pennell allowed a run in relief, but Lowell never really threatened to make it a game again.
Rookie Princeton Rays (17-16)
Princeton's game was going great until they allowed five runs in the ninth in their 5-4 loss to Johnson City. The inning started with an error by Hec Montes, and before the first out was recorded, two hits scored two runs. After a wild pitch that scored another run and a walk, Ruben Paredes was replaced by Steve Ascher, and he didn't fare any better. He loaded the bases and allowed a single that scored the tying and go-ahead runs, and the Rays went 1-2-3 in the ninth to end the game.
That ninth inning wasted the best start of Trevor Lubking's young pro career. At one point, he retired 11 straight on his way to six scoreless innings, striking out seven with no walks and only allowing two hits. He now has 31 strikeouts to one walk in 26.1 innings. Three Rays provided a bulk of the offense; Hec Montes and Manny Sanchez each hit solo home runs, and Patrick Grady had three hits.
Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (19-11)
Taylor Guerrieri made another successful rehab appearance in the GCL Rays' 5-4 win over the GCL Red Sox. He threw three scoreless innings, only allowing two hits with two strikeouts and no walks. All of his other outs came on the ground. With Cameron Varga promoted, it was up to Junior Feliz to be Guerrieri's piggyback partner, and he allowed three runs (two earned) in three innings.
The Rays picked up 15 hits, and they built up a 4-0 lead before the Red Sox scored. Cade Gotta doubled home a pair of runs in the third, and his second double of the game two innings later drove in the first of two runs. Six Rays had two or more hits, led by Isias Alcantar with three. David Rodriguez had two hits, and he's batting .324/.425/.382 in his last 10 games.
Star of the day- Gillaspie has an OPS over 1.000 in his last 10 games.
Goat of the day- Paredes and Ascher didn't help the Princeton cause yesterday afternoon.
