Hickey said as of now all of the starters -- Wade Davis, Jeff Niemann, Alex Cobb, Matt Moore -- will be treated as true starters during the start of the spring. "It'll work itself out," Hickey said, alluding to a possible trade. Failing that Hickey said he would not be surprised if Davis ends up in the bullpen."

Others have had enough of waiting on Upton. "He's always just showing flashes of what he's capable of," said an American League scout. "The lack of adjustments and the same damn swing every time and knowing how much better he can be just drives you crazy."

Kevin Goldstein talked with front office and scout types asking them if they would rather have Yoenis Cespedes or different currently major leaguers such as Colby Rasmus, Drew Stubbs, and B.J. Upton. The vote when it came to Upton was 5 to 3 in favor of the untested Cuban.

Marc Topkin, Tampa Bay Times First Canzler, now DanJo? It's like the Rays don't want to leave us any Quad-A first basemen to get ridiculously, emotionally attached to. Farewell, DanJo. The Legend of the Great Pumpkin shall never die.

White Sox sign Dan Johnson

This is way more depressing than the Canzler trade. Hopefully he gets a shot with the White Sox.

Justin Ruggiano to Elect Free Agency

+

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 30, 2012 at 3:59pm CST] Outfielder Justin Ruggiano will decline his outright assignment and become a free agent, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports on Twitter. The Rays had designated him for assignment last week. "It was a tough decision but in the end I had to do what was best for my career," Ruggiano said, according to Topkin. Ruggiano appeared in 46 games for the Rays last year, playing all three outfield positions. The 29-year-old posted a .248/.273/.400 line in 111 plate appearances. Ruggiano, who also played for the Rays in 2007-08, is not yet arbitration eligible.
