To that end, Bannister introduced Greinke to FIP, or Fielding Independent Pitching, the statistic Greinke named Tuesday as his favorite. It is a formula that measures how well a pitcher performed, regardless of his fielders. According to fangraphs.com, Greinke had the best FIP in the majors.

"That’s pretty much how I pitch, to try to keep my FIP as low as possible," Greinke said.

The Braves, like most clubs, have baselines for their catchers, and according to the NL crosschecker, that includes at minimum a major league average arm.

"An average catcher in MLB doesn't even have an average arm; it's a plus for 95 percent of them," he said. "I tend to believe an amateur catcher's arm should be a true present plus, or very close to it . . . If the arm action isn't too long and the arm strength is there, player development has something to work with, especially if the bat is good."

Other Super Twos include Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum, Rays pitcher Matt Garza, Cubs pitcher Tom Gorzelanny, Royals third baseman Alex Gordon, Orioles pitcher Matt Albers, Pirates pitcher Jeff Karstens, Astros outfielder Hunter Pence, Rangers pitcher Dustin Nippert and newly acquired Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez.

Those players can file for arbitration in mid-January and those who don't settle go to hearings the following month, with three-arbitrator panels selecting the salary proposed by either the player or club.
