Wow, That Deal Would've Sucked

Per Roger Mooney:

It's been reported the Cubs are willing to move Rich Hill, Eric Patterson and a prospect for Crawford, the Rays' All-Star left fielder.

Oh I'm sure they would've been willing all right, that would've been an absolutely awful deal for the Rays. We of course assumed that Marmol and Cedeno were involved and I wouldn't even do that after strongly considering things, but man, a 27 year old starter without ace material, a poor fielding infielder with bust in his blood, and a prospect? Ew.

Well that deal is not going down. Looks like CC will be staying, which makes me happy. I like Carl and unless a deal that came that wowed them they shouldn't do it in my opinion.

Re: With that said...
I would love for that to happen. Let's leave aside the likelihood they are not willing to pay that salary, even for one year. And likewise, set aside skepticism about whether Bonds would consider signing with the Rays. Do you think the Rays would sign a player whose character is questioned by so many after the bad press they have had with Dukes and even Young?

Don't misunderstand. I am a big supporter of Bonds and think the criticisms of him are sanctimonious nonsense. But I wonder if the Rays would want the problem of handling the adverse publicity even if balanced by some approval of opening the purse strings.

Re: Probably not
Another thought. Suppose Bonds is out of the question. If nothing else changes, how about signing Floyd as a DH platoon partner with Gomes? I had been thinking this before and then read some interesting comments today from Sheehan at BP that renewed the thought.

I also like the idea of considering former starters (Clement, Colon, Armas) as possible bullpen arms.

My hope
Would be Chris Snelling taking that part of the platoon, but that's highly doubtful.

That being said, I wouldn't mind Floyd as our DH, assuming he could stay healthy and wouldn't cost that much.

Re: Wow, That Deal Would've Sucked
That deal is different entirely.  The last thing the Rays need is Eric Patterson.  That's an easy no.

Re: Wow, That Deal Would've Sucked
THIS JUST IN!

The Rays were willing to accept a deal that would send Crawford to Chicago in exchange for Geovany Soto, Ronny Cedeno, Carlos Marmol, Rich Hill, and Alfonso Soriano with the Cubs picking up 90% of Soriano's salary. No word yet as if the Cubs will accept this deal.

Ridiculous.

Re: Wow, That Deal Would've Sucked
From Callis' chat at ESPN yesterday:

Cody(Mt. Vernon, IA): Rumors on a Cubs website have the Cubs trading Rich Hill, Ronny Cedeno, and Erick Patterson for Carl Crawford. As much as I would love to have Crawford on the Cubs that can't possibly be enough for a young player signed to a relatively modest deal can it?

Jim Callis: (2:00 PM ET ) There is some rumbling that the Cubs are trying to put together a package of young players to get Crawford. Rich Hill is a young, established big league starter--just what the Rays need. I still like Ronny Cedeno and think he's the Cubs' best long-term shortstop option--but the Rays are high on Reid Brignac, who's about a year away. Eric Patterson is more of utility guy for me. So while I could easily see Hill being part of this deal, I think the Cubs would have to ante up more to get Crawford.

Josh (Tampa): No way the Rays even talk to the Cubs without Marmol being in the discussion. Do you agree?

Jim Callis: (2:14 PM ET ) Disagree . . . I think starting pitchers are more on their mind. I could see them asking for Rich Hill, Sean Marshall or Sean Gallagher, Billy Petrick and maybe a fourth player.
