Rays Trade Dukes for Glenn Gibson

Making a new post for the conversation here.

Gibson is only 20 years and was a UCF signee (Collette finally gets to see him) in his career he's thrown 64 innings with 15 walks and 65 strikeouts. He's a LaMar draft product from last year, so this is has LaMar written all over it (like LaMaritis), thanks Chuck!

Gibson's career statistics through his first three years are impressive. The southpaw has a 17-3 career mark with a 0.64 ERA in 132 innings of work. He has yielded just 40 hits and has totaled 247 strikeouts and just 38 walks during his career. Gibson has tossed three no-hitters and three one-hitters during his prep career. He was named all-state and all-county as a junior and was the Suffolk Pitcher of the Year in 2005.

Stats

Statement from Rays VP Andrew Friedman on the trade:

"We have been committed to providing Elijah the support needed to get his personal and professional life back on track," said Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman. "He has made progress, and a logical next step is a change of cities and a fresh start for him and his family."
Press Release

I'm going to continue posting rumors in the post directly below rather than move this down quite yet.

Yeah
He's four levels away, so even if he skips one, you are looking at 2011.

Looks like Baseball America has Gibson as the Nats seventh best prospect last year:

Re: Rays Trade Dukes for Glenn Gibson
From BBA:  The Future: Because he's so advanced, Gibson will push for a rotation spot in low Class A as a 19-year-old. He has a chance to be a No. 3 starter if he develops physically.

Well, if that happens, I'll be on the look out for him to give you guys a report. You'll have to wait until August though.

Re: Rays Trade Dukes for Glenn Gibson
It might be a little much to expect Gibson to be a #3 starter.  In the two starts of his that I saw this year, he mainly relied on his fastball and curveball and didn't appear to have a decent third pitch, though he was dominant for Vermont in the first half of the season.  He very much reminds me of Sean Marshall.

Excellent trade
Gibson is better than anything I could have possibly expected to come our way from Washington. Wonderful move on the Rays' part, they actually got good value for Dukes.

by Patrick L. Kennedy on Dec 3, 2007 5:21 PM EST   0 recs

Re: Rays Trade Dukes for Glenn Gibson
Gibson is a tall-projectable lanky arm that has some room to fill in. He pitches now at 86-88, but scouts feel he can add a few ticks as he matures.

As far as ETA, my'd guess would beat at the earliest 2010. He just finished short season ball, so he'll have to work his way up the ladder.

He has pitchability, so it is more building up stamina and his size to complete the package from here. This is a great haul for Dukes. Nice job Rays.

Re: Rays Trade Dukes for Glenn Gibson
I agree Patrick this is way more that I expected. I was sort of surprised that Josh Wilson was put on waivers, I think this means that we are going to get two guys back in a trade for one of our guys. We still have plenty of time to have a spot open for the rule 5 unless it has to be way ahead of time, what is the rule on that?

Re: Rays Trade Dukes for Glenn Gibson
wilson was put on waivers probably to specifically open a spot for the Rule 5 pick. we got a 1 for 1 for Dukes, and i am happy with what we got in return. at this point, since Gibson is not going to be on our 40-man, it looks like we have two open spots for Rule 5 picks if we need them.

Re: Rays Trade Dukes for Glenn Gibson
By the way, according to the Prospect Handbook (BA) Gibson was drafted out of high school (Moriches, NY). It said he turned down an offer from UCF.

Also, his minor league career record is 4-3, and here's his link at the baseball cube.

Those worrying about RF
This organization has some of the best foresight around, I'm not concerned at all.

by R.J. Anderson on Dec 3, 2007 5:38 PM EST   0 recs

Re: Those worrying about RF
What does that mean? Like when we had the foresight to let Hamilton go? I don't understand what "good foresight" means.

by Kevin Gengler on Dec 3, 2007 5:48 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Re: Those worrying about RF
Well, the Cubs sold off Hamilton to the Reds. We just left him unprotected. I wonder if playing in The Great American Smallpark had anything to do with Hamilton's year.

If Hamilton is such a beloved part of the Reds, why are they attempting to trade him off to make room for Jay Bruce? Is it because he's still proven to be injury-prone? How about that he's only good in small sample sizes?

by Jacob Larsen on Dec 3, 2007 5:58 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Re: Those worrying about RF
How about that Jay Bruce is the #1 prospect in baseball?

by nyyfaninlaaland on Dec 7, 2007 3:26 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

Yay!
The classic argument used to defraud the organization. Quick how many 25 year olds hitting .250 in A ball who's never played above AA with knee injuries would you want on the 40 man roster?

I'm hoping none.

The FO always has another move in mind when they've dealt.

Re: Rays Trade Dukes for Glenn Gibson
I took a good look at Gibson's numbers, and he is more of a project than others. That's ok, there's no immediate need here.

I guess RF comes down to Gomes, Rocco, Ruggiano and possibly Barton (Rule 5). We'll see which direction they go.

Re: Rays Trade Dukes for Glenn Gibson
I am beginning to think Friedman is a genius. I expected to get some non-descript minor league filler for him, not because he isn't talented but because of his history and the obvious assumption the Rays could not keep him.

There is no way to know that Gibson is anything at all, but a 19 year old, 6'4" lefty who has been good in rookie ball! That is a gift.

by bobr on Dec 3, 2007 5:45 PM EST   0 recs

Re: Rays Trade Dukes for Glenn Gibson
I suppose it's a win in that the Rays got anything at all for Dukes.  It's surprising his Rays career didn't end with an unconditional release (or jail time or..).

Here's hoping he gets his life in order, like Hamilton, I suppose.

Re: Or
why exactly are people wanting Broussard? a 31 year old strike out machine, with minimal power, and average glove, and a .260 average is not something i want to trade Jackson for, a guy who showed me real promise the second half of the season last year with a 4.40 era and some real dominance at times.

by davidsmarch on Dec 3, 2007 5:56 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Re: Or
Hahahahaha, he showed real dominance in the second half of the season with a 4.40 ERA. Yeah, that's dominance when he's walking as many batters as he's striking out and his best game is when he's nailed in the head by an errant throw.

He's OUT OF OPTIONS, which means if he sucks badly again...we have basically release him to the rest of baseball.

He wasn't as bad as his first half showed
And he did have some really good games in the second half, the question is was that the law of averages working out, or can he put together a season full of good starts?

Also he was out of options last year and sucked, we didn't cut him loose, at this point it's irrelevant.

Re: Rays Trade Dukes for Glenn Gibson
I have to think that the Rays have a deal in place and are just waiting on some minor details or final approval from the league. It's not taking them long this year to make things happen, we might get spoiled if this keeps up.

Taking the Devil out of Rays
It was one thing to change the name thinking it would change the franchise image....another thing entirely to get rid of the bat thrower and Mr. Anger Management.

Re: Rays Trade Dukes for Glenn Gibson

I find it interesting though that they traded a major league ready (physically, if not mentally) outfielder with a pretty big up-side for a 20 year old project who might see some major league time in 2011. Obviously Duke's value was quite low because of all the off the field stuff. But death threats aside, I thought he could have been packaged with Edwin Jackson or a minor league arm for a good catcher or right fielder. Maybe we were lucky another team gave up anybody for Dukes. But yeah, this could have Josh Hamilton scenario written all over it.

Delmon and Dukes could haunt us
Or they could vindicate us for ridding ourselves of them. Certainly it's going to be something worth watching over the next half-decade plus.

by R.J. Anderson on Dec 3, 2007 6:31 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

He has immediate value
Trade market for Dukes:  presumably one team

Trade market for young, strike-throwing lefties:  twenty-nine teams.

Even if Gibson does not make the majors until 2011, he immediately has value to the franchise.  Each year he performs well, his value goes up and can be cashed in at any time.

Since it seems like most people genuinely hated Dukes being around. Of course people on the Times' site are complaining we have too much pitching and not enough outfielders.

Re: Rays Trade Dukes for Glenn Gibson
Evaluating the reasonableness of a trade only makes sense at the time it is made, taking into account what is known (or should be known) at the time and other circumstances that might force the hand of GMs. Whether it is a good trade is another issue. That can only be assessed at the end of the players' careers. But a disastrous deal may still be the right one to make at the time, may still be an excellent deal in fact.

In the Dukes' case, the Rays had to trade him, and had to do it now. They had postponed the decision as long as possible in an effort to build his value. But there was no way he could be brought into spring training, and every other team knew that. And that circumstance was not the Rays' fault. They did not cause his problems or make no efforts to address them.

Given that circumstance, had he simply been released or dealt for a non-prospect, I don't think we could criticize. Why would any team cede anything of value knowing he would be available for nothing soon? But Washington did give up a prospect, however deep in the system. Maybe they thought another team might grab him for nothing or the Rays would find a suitor. Whatever the reason, the Rays squeezed as much value out of him as they possibly could, and more than had they dealt him a month ago or probably if they had held out until February.

In 15 years, we may wonder at the fates that led us to give up a HOF player for one who never got past A ball. But today, it is a terrific return to the Rays.

I really wonder what the Nats are going to do. All this talent doesn't have room to play in one outfield. I wonder if they plan on sending Dukes down, but I can't imagine he'd need any more baseball seasoning.
