DRays Bay Takes on Stuart Sternberg, Devil Rays Owner

This is an interview that needs no introduction and I'll let it speak for itself

-Jake
---

RJ Anderson: So Mr. Sternberg, how does it feel to be an owner of a professional baseball franchise?

Stuart Sternberg: Feels great, there is a lot of responsibility that comes with the title.

Jake: Not counting you, how many people are in the ownership that bought the majority ownership in the Rays? Also, could you explain the process of buying a baseball team?

Stuart Sternberg: 5 others, it is a pretty extensive process and all potential owners are vetted extensively.

RJ: Obviously the team has tried separating itself from the old regime, for good reason, were all of the changes part of the initial plan that began before the purchase, or were they brought up as the turnover of regimes began?

Stu: There was no particular time that the changes were contemplated. It was a very fluid process

Jake: Do you plan on moving to St. Petersburg anytime soon or do you prefer the situation that you have now with you making semi-frequent trips from NY-to-FL?

Stu: My plan for the foreseeable future is to remain a NY resident

RJ: What about Andrew Friedman and Matthew Silverman made them key components of the new front office?

Stu: Andrew and Matt are bright ,energetic , right thinking young men with a passion for business and baseball

Jake: I've always heard of a story in which either you or Maddon wrote a 42-page email encompassing "The Rays Way" and alot of people(who had the opportunity to read it) loved it and it bought them into the organization,  was it you that wrote it? If so, can I have a copy of it? Kidding kidding, could you explain some of the thoughts that were passed along in that email?

Stu: The organization put that together in order to try and show what we hoped to represent.

RJ: Growing up a Mets fan, I'm sure you remember the 'Amazing Mets' run, do you see any similarities between those Mets and these upcoming Rays?

Stu: Most expansion teams have a similar trajectory.

Jake: I know that we've touched on this before, but what are your thoughts on the almost vile(from a Rays fan's point-of-view), tongue-in-cheek articles that have been written by Joe Henderson, Gary Shelton and John Romano? Do you think that they're being hypocrites after they went without bashing the old regime for 7 out of the 8 years, but gave you and the NDRO less than a 15 month waiting period before turning against you?

Stu: I am not familiar with the medias stance the first 7 or 8 years so I am unable to comment on the comparison. By and large I feel they have done a great job reporting.

RJ: The Evan Longoria selection was unfairly categorized as 'cheap' the day of the draft, nearing a year later it appears the organization made a great selection, come June would cost play into the selection what so ever?

Stu: He wasn't cheap when we wrote the check. Money is not the key issue when drafting an amateur player

Jake: Many publications have termed the Rays Farm System as being "The Best in Baseball" with a great majority of our best prospects being in their Top 100 lists. How much credit do you guys take for putting the Farm System in that upper echelon?

Stu: A number of the people involved with getting the farm system where it is today are still here, I would like to think that we have been additive to the process.

RJ: I hate to keep hitting on money, but some feel the team made no effort to improve, obviously mistaking the fact that the young players will progress and replacing them with elder players would be quite foolish at this point, what do you think when you hear or read these comments from your own home media?

Stu: We believe that each and every player that makes our 25 man roster can  improve on last years performance. I would expect those players feel the same way.

Jake: When Andy, Gerry, Matt and you get together and pick the players that you're going to target in Free Agency or in trades, how do you go about it? Is there certain criteria that a player has to fit before you make the move?

Stu: We certainly fish in a different pond than the high revenue clubs. Having said that , it is important that the players can help us for a number of years. We are not in the market for one year and out.

RJ: Without imposing too much into the Rays 'secrets' did the team place a bid on Daisuke Matsuzaka?

Stu:I won't comment on another organizations players.

Jake: Out of the 3 big name japanese players that were posted, how many did the Rays post a bid on?

Stu: Ditto

Jake: In my opinion, the next big pitcher that will come out of Japan will be a player by the name of Yu Darvish. Have you ever heard of this 20 year old with amazing upside?

Stu: Ditto

RJ: Obviously a big part of the first week of your ownership was the re-signing of Rocco Baldelli to a (upfront at least) team friendly contract, is this going to be a main technique used over the years to retain players?

Stu: If a player wants to be here and the feeling is mutual then we would hope that could be accomplished

Jake: Million dollar question, is Scott Kazmir the next Rays player that you guys plan on trying to getting a contract extension with?

Stu: Scott is a very valuable part of this organization.

RJ: The team added Akinori Iwamura over the off-season, part of the improvements made to the infield defense that were promised, with that in mind, how does the new turf plan to play into the velocity of ground balls? Basically will it slow them down substantially?

Stu: Until it gets played on we wont know for certain. Our sense is that it will play truer to grass than the old turf.

Jake: Could you explain what you guys seen in Akinori Iwamura to make him a huge target in Free Agency?

Stu: Aki seems to have the right stuff and fills a need for us.

RJ: Another ballpark feature would be the new video boards and the cownose rays tank, what were the thoughts behind these additions?

Stu: To bring some more fun and interest into the ballpark.

Jake:  ESPN, on numerous occasions and sometimes at no end, make Tropicana to be a dark, dank jail-cell like building. Do you guys plan on doing anything with the exterior of Tropicana that will make it "not so gray"?

Stu: We are infinitely more focused on the interior and the entire organization. That said some minor improvements were made to the exterior last year and we expect more this season and next.

RJ: There has been talk of lowering the left field wall so Carl Crawford can produce some 'Torii Hunter' like web gems, is the thinking also slanted towards the right handed hitting lineup? Also will the wall indeed be lowered or has a final decision been reached yet?

Stu: Down it goes as we speak.

Jake: Right now, the Devil Rays are in the envious position of having 3 cornerstone outfielders. How do you feel about the Rays having 3 Outfielders that have yet to hit their "peak years"(27-31) locked up for the next 4-6 years?

Stu: The more positions that we can feel somewhat secure about, the better.

RJ: A lot of people seem to worry over the Orlando series as a way for the organization to try and move, though to the logical ones it's just an attempt at expanding the market, and considering the lease it's not as if the Rays can bolt, nor would they choose to anytime soon, do you care to address the former whom seem to think you want to move away from the St. Pete area?

Stu: We need to and will ,extend our fan base

Jake: Could you explain how you became familiar with our little blog? I felt a bit starstruck when you told me this, so could you care to re-tell this story?

Stu: Goes back a few years, the internet can be a marvelous tool. I was directed to the site and found it to be thoughtful,  informative and insightful. I also spend quite a bit of time on the fan board at our teams site on MLB.com .

Jake:Any hints on anything to do with the possible color-scheme changes or ideas for jerseys? My idea is having all of our jerseys, home and away, being sleeveless which would make our players more aero-dynamic and enables the fans to see just "how big" a player is. Note that's just my thoughts, but I think I'd be willing to let you guys use it. Hahahaha

Stu: We are working on that currently, though sleeveless might be out.

RJ: Do you have anything to address our readers, your team's fans about?

Stu: Thank you for leading our faithful following. Your support will be rewarded by our performance on the field. Count on it.

You sure do like to 'name drop' don't you?  Great interview.  I think Stu's last line needs to be permanently posted somewhere on the main page.

Re: DRays Bay Takes on Stuart Sternberg,
That was an awesome interview!! We shouldn't be suprised though that others are finding out about the likes of draysbay.com and others like raysbaseball.com as it just shows folks everywhere are getting excited about this team and need a place to talk with others who share the same passion.  I know back in the dark days, it seemed like I was the only Rays fan around in St. Pete who was upset that even local bars/restaurants would be playing other games when the local team was on TV.  That situation is now thankfully changing and mark my words, when the Rays turn it around (hopefully this year), downtown St. Pete will never be the same and neither will Tampa Bay.  Move over Bucs, here come the Rays!  Anyway, this is an exciting time to be a Rays fan and I can't wait to tune in to 1250 whnz (http://www.whnz.com/main.html) at 1pm EST tomorrow to listen to the game.  Go Rays!!

Re: DRays Bay Takes on Stuart Sternberg,
This is the home run interview.  I want to say great job and thanks to all for this.  Job well done.

I concur this needs to be permalinked so readers and other fans can refer to this.  Its important that this interview be archived.

Re: DRays Bay Takes on Stuart Sternberg,
Thanks Joe, I'm sure we'll probably make an interview section with the amount we've pulled in this off-season.

14 or so hours until baseball folks!

Re: DRays Bay Takes on Stuart Sternberg,
Boy, you guys really took him to the mat in that one. More softballs than I've seen in 20 years of slow pitch. Keep it positive guys!

RJ, I'm sorry to harp on this point, but the development of young players is not a given. If it were Waechter and McClung would be rotation stalwarts, Orvella would be your key setup guy or closer, Upton would be leading off at short, Switzer would be the lefty stopper, Stokes and E-Jax would be established parts of the puzzle, and Brendan Harris would be somebody's 2B. It just doesn't always go that way. But they're still young so it's not over yet.

For added evidence try the following link:

http://www.rotoworld.com/Content/features/column.aspx?sport=MLB&columnid=2&articleid=27501

It's a reprint of Rotoworld.com's top 100 prospects from 2002. Matt Pouliot mostly just distills the rankings of other scouting sites, so is never far from the consensus. By my count less than 20 are filling important roles for their organization in 2002 just 5 years later. Of course, some are stars, and some are successful with other orgs. The Rays were #16 Josh Hamilton, #32 Brazelton, & #48 CC (does this sound a bit prophetic "The Rays believe he's their leadoff hitter of the future. However, before that can happen, he has a lot to learn about getting on base."). 50-50's not bad, and who knows what's in Hamilton's future. Brandon Phillips, Carlos Pena, and H S Choi were in the top 30. A cautionary tale perhaps. But he loved you this year - 12 in his top 200 he says. Hey, maybe I'm a little cranky tonight, don't take it wrong, but I am a realist.

On a lighter note, if you're a fan of baseball and can stand a little tongue in cheek satiric humor about the game, albeit in a Yankee blog package, check out Pete Abraham's running blog commentary of today's Yanks' spring training opener in your town. Plenty of barbs aimed at Yanks' fans overworked angst and all the silly controversies. Below, and I hope you can enjoy.

http://yankees.lohudblogs.com/

You guys at DRaysBay should try this - maybe get in some potshots at the Yanks or Bosox at one of your spring games.

As anathema as paying any attention whatsoever to anything Yanks related might be to you guys, this stuff was pretty funny. The posts are moving forward through the game so you want to scroll or page back to one titled "3-0 Yanks". In case you don't bother, a sample:

The fourth inning ended when A-Rod was out at second trying to stretch a single into a double.

"I knew it was a mistake to hit you fourth," Torre yelled. "Now take out the garbage."

See, we have a sense of humor about ourselves. And avoid the comments - some of the most inane Yankee fan screeching you'll ever see. It's like "Jim Rome does the Yankees". But Pete's pretty good.

Hey good luck tomorrow - it's time for some baseball!!!

Re: DRays Bay Takes on Stuart Sternberg,
I have a little interview of my own I'd like to do:

So what questions would you have asked?

Can you list any other majority owners in professional sports that have granted an interview in a fan blog?

Jim Leyland says that "if he has a choice between an experienced guy with middling stuff and a young, high-talent pitcher, his instinct is always to take the talent."  Do you think that this is the right path (player development) for the DevilRays to follow or should we go follow the Yankee and Red Sox  method and go after high dollar players that would have the same output as one of our prospects?

I don't necessarily want answers to any of these questions but my point is that while I can't speak for anyone else that frequents this site, I personally do not want to follow the same path as the Yankees or Red Sox and it is unreasonable to compare two such teams with an epic history to that of a 10 year old franchise.

It just seems that every time a DevilRay tries to take a step in the right direction (or even suggest such a step) there is always a Yankee or Red Sox fan waiting to try to knock them back down.

As for being a realist, not one post on this or any other of the DevilRays sites that I visit on a daily basis have even mentioned making the playoffs this year.  Our own owner even stated that the main goal for the team was to win 50 games at home this season, not make it to .500, not finish in 4th place, and not even improve on our horrific road record from last season.

Our player development has given us the best young outfield in baseball and the most optimism this franchise has had since "The Hit Show" days.  Greg Vaughn was our Carl Pavano, Vinnie Castilla in a way was our A-Rod (give the guy a break!) and our Jose Canseco ended up being your Jose Canseco.  So much for player development there.

Re: DRays Bay Takes on Stuart Sternberg,
I think you might misunderstand me Sean, I'm really not trying to knock your team down - I wouldn't mind you taking the Wild Card as soon as possible - that's not a rip, I am a fan of my team first.

I think developing for the future is a good thing, and the right strategy for the Rays given the good set of prospects and young players you have. I've never suggested you go buy expensive free agents. I see the optimism, I think it's justified, and I hope your patience pays off.

I have suggested, repeatedly, that you should have, and could have, made bullpen improvements that could have helped breed confidence in the fan base that the NDRO was in fact different, and might have helped a team that set a record for losing games in which they had a lead to win a few more as a bonus and meet that home wins goal. Too late for that now. The payroll's been cut $13 mil since last Opening Day - that alone could have bought 3 likely better relievers than what you're running out there. There is no long term in major league pens. There's not 1 major league team heading into '07 with 3 guys that have pitched 30 relief innings for their team in each of the 3 preceding seasons.

And the money is there - the Rays took in over $60 million from the MLB central fund plus revenue sharing for this year, money that contractually must be earmarked in the revenue sharing case ($32 million) for improvements to competitiveness on the field. That doesn't mean new scoreboards or turf.

That's the kind of question I would have asked Sternberg - and I also would have complimented him on trying to build a winning organization. I would have asked where and when he thought the Rays would have to supplement the roster with some key outside talent. I would have asked him what he thought a reasonable payroll threshold would be in 2010 when the core developing players would be in or entering arbitration and some key holdovers were in or nearing free agency. I would have asked if he thought local revenue streams could be grown sufficient to keep pace with the demands of a competitive payroll level in the face of probably falling revenue sharing payments. These are business questions, and this is his business. I wouldn't have asked this:

"I know that we've touched on this before, but what are your thoughts on the almost vile(from a Rays fan's point-of-view), tongue-in-cheek articles that have been written by Joe Henderson, Gary Shelton and John Romano? Do you think that they're being hypocrites after they went without bashing the old regime for 7 out of the 8 years, but gave you and the NDRO less than a 15 month waiting period before turning against you?"

Or this:

"I hate to keep hitting on money, but some feel the team made no effort to improve, obviously mistaking the fact that the young players will progress and replacing them with elder players would be quite foolish at this point, what do you think when you hear or read these comments from your own home media?"

This latter because as I said elsewhere in the site - which I do enjoy and appreciate the enthusiasm and usually reasoned arguments I see - not all young players do progress. That's where the realism part came in, cause a number of your prospects and young Rays won't develop into good core players. I don't see fans here expecting a big season this year.

Re your Leyland quote above, ask if he'd rather have a talented experienced player or a talented inexperienced player - that's the true comparison. The Yanks don't "go after high dollar players that would have the same output as one of our prospects", they pay proven players of higher output. Our players produce, that's why we win. Prospects have no output, they're not in the majors. Their minors performance tends to be predictive of, but doesn't guarantee majors success. Young successful major league players (Scott Kazmir for example) become high dollar players if they continue to produce over time. What happened to the salaries of Mauer, Morneau, and Cuddyer this offseason. Zoom!!! Minny's now pushing a $75 mil payroll for '07. With continued or renewed success, that's what will happen with Kazmir, Cantu, Gomes, McClung, Wiggy in '08, and hopefully a number of others to follow. The question on everyones mind is will the organization pay to keep the right ones, and will the right ones want to stay. Hope so. I know how frustrating it's been for you so far - I was a Yankee fan in the late 80's and early 90's when we sucked and spent too much on retreads and rejects.

I've never compared the Rays to the Yanks or Sox - its not the right comparison. The A's Twins, even Braves are more appropriate. Lower revenue clubs have to constantly refresh with some lower cost kids to keep payroll down and can't afford big dollar mistakes. Frankly the Yankees are placing a lot of emphasis on prospect development now - look at our offseason, with trades of Johnson, Sheffield, Wright for mostly future assets. Wang, Cano, and Cabrera have made impacts in the last 2 seasons. We may have the best stock of pitching prospects of any org. Our team will be turning over in '09 to '11. A few more homegrowns and we can keep competing by filling gaps.

I've gone on way too much and I'm sorry, but I like to talk about the game and the business of it, especially here cause you folks aren't stupid. Sorry about the interview slam, RJ and Jake. It was a bit of a puff piece in my eyes, but hey, you don't want to be totally antagonistic to the guy. I understand. I met Joe Torre last year through a friend and I didn't ask him why he mishandles the Yanks bullpen.

Oh Joy and Rapture!
You're not a loudmouth, you're a Yankee fan, I wouldn't expect anything less then you. Why don't you tell me realistically why the Yankees have almost no home grown talent in their line up? Realistically why do the Yankees keep on spending millions of dollars and have NOTHING to show for it? Keep on being you, you little ray of sunshine.

Re: Oh Joy and Rapture!
Let's see, we've got a homegrown SS (Jeter), 2B (Cano), likely 1 of 1B platoon (Phillips), backup OF (Cabrera) with another (Williams) who's career appears at an end - don't get me started on that, C (Posada), SP (Wang), & Pettitte could count but he chose to leave as free agent for 3 years, closer (Rivera), set-up RP (Proctor, though we acquired him in trade when in minors, like Rays with Kaz, Zobrist). I wouldn't count the Japanese imports, you Aki, us Matsui and Igawa, but they've never played elsewhere in the US. Developing via homegrown players is a strategy for success, not the goal, which is winning.

And if "nothing to show" is 12 straight playoff appearances, 9 straight division chapionships, 4 Series championships plus 2 other AL Pennants in last 11 seasons, well what counts as something?

I appreciate your passion, but don't let it blind you.

Re: DRays Bay Takes on Stuart Sternberg,
Wow let's take a deep breath....breathe....now....you want to point out prospects fail? Well no ####. Not every prospect is going to fufil their potential, but look at the Rays...CC...Del....Rocc...Cantu...Gomes...Hall...Huff...Zambrano...all products of our farm system. Josh Hamilton will perhaps make the Reds 25 man roster, Brazelton is a bust, and so on.

You really must think we're a bunch of incompetent folks to realize that never ever prospect is Jes...oh sorry, Derek freaking Jeter, we get it...believe us we've got it, nobody is sitting here saying 'Evan Longoria is the next Brooks Robinson' we're saying Longoria is probably a Zimmerman like path, he's going to go from college to the pros in under three years (Zimmy did it in one really) and will hit / play good defense. Those are realistic, next I've never seen us justify a talent level with their ranking number...'ZOMG DELMON IS AT 2 HE'S THE BESTEST EVER'...no, you point out all the high falures how about Aub Huff who was 98 on the 2000 list I believe, how'd that work out again?

Suprises and failures happen, the fact we have so many 'good' minor leaguers will translate into more of the former than latter, ask Minnesota, ask Oakland.

Next...Jim Rome? I hate the man, you wanna know Jim Rome's formula?

(Athlete not on show) = He sucks
(athlete on show) = Your the man

You act as if we're not satirical or sarcastic...yet...we are, or did you just miss the whole 'good bye letter' to Tomas and Meadows, as well as us interview Deadspin's editor who does nothing but satirical writing, no?

Re: DRays Bay Takes on Stuart Sternberg,
I probably watched about 100 or so games on it last year.  Be warned that you can't watch regular season DRays games live.  But if you missed a game you can always watch it shortly after it's over.

It's also great if you have Johan Santana on your fantasy team and want to catch him pitch.

Re: DRays Bay Takes on Stuart Sternberg,
Jake has told me about the archives and such, which sounded like money well spent just to re-watch last year's games like the Rocco NY game where he made a great throw and a great catch along with scoring the winning run.

Re: DRays Bay Takes on Stuart Sternberg,
I bought the minor league package to see the kids coming up and to see the guys rehabbing, it's pretty nice. The only reason why I don't buy the major league package is I get almost all the Rays games on TV. If not for me being in the area then I would buy the package in a second's notice.

Re: DRays Bay Takes on Stuart Sternberg, Devil Ray
Good Job lads. Now, for anyone who has been following this team a while. The old regime would talk and say thing they probably shouldn't say. This  group keeps their commentary and opinion fairly tucked in. Can you say poker face. They seem to be business type and once they taste some success they might be more forthcoming, but for now they are wound tight.

Now, the fact that he has been following the site is a complement to everyone here who makes this a community.

When Stu took over the team a few years back he mentioned he would be talking to a blogger of Rays. Never did I think at time he was referring
here. Wow, we had him at hello.
