If Nobody Sees The Game, Do They Still Play It? (W/Hammel Edit)

Thanks to the exclusive Sunday Night contract deal pulled by ESPN / MLB we won't be seeing the Rays series finale against the Texas Rangers, but a few thoughts to pass along until I crank up the Gameday will watching /listening to the San Diego Chargers / Seattle Seahawks pre-season game on NBC.

  • Why in the world would you have a getaway day game at 8:35 EST when one of the teams have to travel to Boston and play the next night?
  • Something tells me you wouldn't want to tell your kids the story about Babe Ruth and his uh...other'bat'
  • Dewon Brazelton and Victor Zambrano on the same AAA team? Yep.

Update [2007-8-12 21:55:54 by Jacob Larsen]:I'm sorry, but after we take out an opposing team's starter(though, it was clearly his fault) and we're still being beat...it's evident that Hammel is no more than a (earmuffs, kids) Punk-bidge*(ok, I edited myself enough). I'm sick and tired of seeing our pitchers believing that their stuff is so deceiving that hitters are going to swing at pitches way out of the zone every time. Ok, it makes sense to do that against one hitter but after you walk a hitter and notice that you're not getting great ball/strike calls by the umps...CUT THAT OUT! Hammel, you have the great curveball, but it's not that friggin' great. I wish it was Red Foreman night at Arlington, seeing as I'd love to see someone put a foot up your ass

Right on...
I do not understand the schedule of having the team play in Dallas at 835 and game over by 11, shower up leave the park by midnight and get to DFW International by 1230 to 1 am and then you got a 4 hour flight to Logan and then its already 5 am.

Sure its the life of a ballplayer, and I do believe I read a quirk in the CBA there can be no Sunday day games in Texas.  Is there some legitimate reason besides heat consideration why can't there be afternoon games in Texas?  Doesn't Houston play afternoon games on Sundays or getaway days?

Did the Rays already send tomorrow night's starter to Boston already to get a good night's sleep at least?

Re: Right on...
Preseason NFL?  Yuck!

It is unbearably hot in Arlington this time of year.  The high tomorrow will be a muggy 102 degrees with a heat index of 110.  The roof was closed today in Houston.

Re: Right on...
Who the heck said you can't play day games in Texas and not Houston?  They play day games in Miami in the freaking heat and there are days they open the roof in Phoenix and its 110+?

I know the MLBPA has something special for Texas and playing specifically at Arlington, but on getaway days, its kinda BS for a visiting team to go on and play the following night.  But its fair for everyone, so who am I to complain?!

Re: Right on...
Are you sure they play afternoon games in Phoenix with the roof open and 110+?  They didn't open the roof today, neither did Houston.

Re: Right on...
Not today, but I believe they played a getaway game with the Rays ironically where the roof was open during the day an it was a getaway afternoon game.

Re: Right on...
I was looking at the CBA and there are no "rules" for or if a team is mandated to close a roof if there is a retractable roof for a temperature situation.  I think its up to the club if they want to play with the roof open or not.

Re: Right on...
Just seems odd assuming the only point to having a roof in Phoenix is to keep the heat out.

Re: Right on...
Just peeking ahead, Shields is the scheduled starter.  I would think that he was told to check out of the hotel and made his own way from Dallas to Boston and to check into the hotel up there.  He should be given the chance to have a good night's rest.

Am I the only person who is laughing?
How is there a discussion on whether or not it's right to have a retractable roof stadium to have an open or closed roof in hot-weather games and not about the day's game?

Yes.
Because the game time was mentioned in the original post?

But by all means, discuss the game.
