Prospect List #4

Not suprisingly the third slot came down to Jake McGee and Wade Davis with Reid Brignac and Jeff Niemann trailing slightly behind in a dead heat for second runner-up. In the end the man with the electric heater won, here's your #3 Jake McGee.

Fastball that sits in the 90-93 range, can get it into the mid-90's, solid secondary pitches and a good feel for pitching. - Jay Bradley (RaysBB.com) Some have compared McGee to Erik Bedard, he was of course a draft pick by the old Rays regime, and the main concern for McGee is using his non-fastball pitches as some have cited his lack of diversity as hurdle for quicker promotions. The ultimate compliment to McGee's heater would be how well he's done in the lower levels with basically a single pitch.

I'm thinking today is Wade Davis' day to get off the waiting list...

Running List

  1. Evan Longoria
  2. David Price
  3. Jake McGee
  4. Tomorrow
  5. Friday

Wade Davis

Position: RHSP

Age:22.0

Projected 08 Level: AA/AAA

Stats:

Vero Beach (13 GS) - 78.1 IP 54 H 5 HR 88 K 21 BB 1.84 ERA

Montgomery (14 GS) - 80 IP 74 H 3 HR 81 K 30 BB 3.15 ERA

Another third of the Montgomery trio, Davis is more polished than McGee in terms of using his non-fastball pitches, although I'm not sure that any of his pitches can match the effectiveness of that McGee heater.

Reid Brignac

Position: SS

Age:21.8

Projected 08 Level: AAA

Stats:

Montgomery (527 AB) - .260/.328/.433/.761 17 HR 81 RBIs 55 BB 94 K

Although the Cajun God did struggle for most of the year, you wonder if perhaps some of it was Longoria withdrawal. Brignac maintains his hacky ways, but with a patient hitter like Longoria complementing his style you have to wonder if he grew too accustomed to the Batman / Robin approach.

Jeff Niemann

Position: RHSP

Age:24.7

Projected 08 Level: MLB

Stats:

Durham (25 GS) - 131 IP 144 H 13 HR 123 K 46 BB 3.98 ERA

"Big Red" had his most healthy season to date and finished strong down the stretch, giving hope that come April Niemann will be taking the mound for Tampa every fifth day.

Re: Prospect List #4
It has to be Wade. He is only a small notch below McGee, which is awesome for the future of this franchise.

Re: Prospect List #4
Just thought you would like to see what Kevin Goldstein's view is. From his chat at BP today:
_________________
Stewart D (Arlington, VA): In the past you seemed to like Jacob McGee better than Wade Davis, but this year you seem to be leaning more toward Davis as a slightly better prospect. Has McGee slipped, Davis developed faster or is it a coin flip?

Kevin Goldstein: Flip it. I had them #5 and #6 (with McGee first) in last year's rankings, and you could easily intertwine the two. I do SLIGHTLY favor Davis RIGHT NOW, but by the time the top 10 comes out, that may change.

Nice timing
Goldstein knows his stuff, I hope Jake can have a follow up interview with him this off-season.

Hmm...
I got to see McGee pitch twice this season, and he reminds me of a left handed Seth McClung. We'll see what happens in the off season.

IMO, Davis is just better. But, that's why I love this sight. I can shoot the sh*t and talk baseball without some freak saying the the Yanks or Sux are the greatest thing since Barbara Streisand.

Re: Hmm...
Barbara Streisand?

Sounds like a not-so-subtle way of saying something else.

'shudders'
I don't think we could handle another McClung.

Re: 'shudders'
Seth currently has a 3.72 ERA... he is really turning it around and helping the Brew Crew out... He very may well be Curt Schilling type player down the road who will really dominate later in his career. It's not like Seth is a 38... he is 26... I am calling it now. I say the guy is going to dominate...

He has a 4.66 ERA
And still has less than ten innings of work for Milwaukee. His walk rates have seemed to improve for the better in the Brewers organization, so we'll see. But I just don't see things turning out nearly "dominant" for McClung.

You know
Watching Joba I just so happened to click on this thread by accident. Coincidence? Absolutely.
