Rays Trade Ridgway; Get Two
Hopefully this explains our recent obsession with Aybar, we've been waiting on this for a few days...The Rays have traded Jeff Ridgway to the Atlanta Braves for infielders Willy Aybar and Chase Fontaine.
Aybar, 25 when the season begins, didn't play last year due to visa and substance issues, he had wrist surgery in August, but if you'll remember came over to the Braves for Wilson Betemit two years ago. He's a sell low type, but his bat suggests he can become our utility infielder, although he needs to get a look at shortstop in the spring since he's played a total of one game there in the minors.

Fontaine is 22 and a shortstop, if he hits he should be able to stick at six slot, if not he might have to move elsewhere, although that could also come to be if one Mr. Reid Brignac works out. On the positive side he's got power and plate presence. Plus look at him, just look at him:

Ridgway, 27, didn't appear to have too much of a future with the Rays although he was expected to enter camp and compete for a LOOGY spot. If nothing else this just cements the idea of adding another lefty reliever.

Fairwell R-Way
1 Out, 7 ER
Apparently, players with ERAs more than their weight equal something these days.

Re: Rays Trade Ridgway; Get Two
Fontaine wasn't used as a SS this season - it looks like the Braves came to view him as a utility guy - curse of death in the low minors. And clearly they must be concerned about Aybar. Maybe some Josh Hamilton payback is on the way - meaning Aybar might be another feel good story.
Seems like a good deal for you guys. Either the Braves have gotten pretty dumb pretty fast, or there's more here than meets the eye.

Ridgway might work out for Atlanta, who knows, I just hope we still bring in another lefty reliever so we don't have to worry about what could've been.

Re: Rays Trade Ridgway; Get Two
The Braves gave up two young infield prospects who may never make it, but have a chance to be at least solid bench players and maybe more. How did the Rays squeeze two players from the Braves for Ridgway?
And it seems to me that Aybar does have a little pop. Certainly not for a third baseman but for a middle infielder, a 400+ slugging is not bad, and he has had seasons with double figure home runs and 20+ doubles. And Fontaine seems to walk quite a lot.
Giving up Ridgway does limit the pool from which the Rays can find a loogy in 2007, but other than that, I see no loss at all. Hardly a major deal, but symptomatic of the smarts that Friedman always seems to show.

**
Aybar, 23, set a then-record for Dominicans when he signed for $1.4 million in 2000. He batted .326 in a September callup last year, but didn't hit well enough to keep the third-base job after Mueller got hurt. Aybar has hit .250/.356/.414 with three homers and 22 RBIs in 43 games this season. The older brother of prime Angels shortstop prospect Erick Aybar, Willy is an offensive-minded player who doesn't profile perfectly at any position. He has a line-drive bat, strong arm and sound hands, but he lacks the range for second base and the home run power for third. Likely to fill Betemit's former utility role in Atlanta, Aybar won't be eligible for arbitration until after the 2008 season at the earliest. He has hit .280/.394/.430 with four homers and 32 RBIs in 69 big league games.

Re: Rays Trade Ridgway; Get Two
*
Fontaine went undrafted in 2004 after he slumped as a high school senior. He turned down the Rangers as an 18th-round draft-and-follow this spring, a move that paid off when the Braves selected him in the second round.
Fontaine is a solid all-around player whose bat stands out the most. He hits to all fields with a short, compact swing and he'll develop more power once he adds some loft to his stroke. While he has a plus arm, he's a below-average runner with stiff hands, so his future might be at second or third base rather than shortstop.

Looks like he profiles best at 2B

Re: Rays Trade Ridgway; Get Two
Drafted in the second round out of Daytona Beach CC in 2006, Chase Fontaine (sounds like a name from a 1950s musical) is a line drive hitter with very good strike zone judgment. He doesn't have much power at this point, although some scouts believe he will develop more as he progresses. He hit well in the Sally League (OPS +9 percent), but was much less effective after a late promotion to the Carolina League. Note the deterioration in his BB/K/AB ratio at the higher level. I was pretty optimistic about Fontaine last year and gave him a B-, but that looks too high right now. He needs to show more pop, but still has a chance to be an Adam Kennedy type. Grade C+.

Re: Rays Trade Ridgway; Get Two
Second, Fontaine projects as a second baseman. It has often been noted that 2B is the weakest position in the Rays' system, so even if Fontaine is not star quality, he does add depth to a weakness. Again, seems like good thinking to me, and as R.J. says, it is remarkable that the Rays received the "throw-in".
Can anyone think of a trade in the last 2 years when the Rays did not get the "extra" player so that the deal was at least equal in numbers or more often tilted towards TB?

Re: Rays Trade Ridgway; Get Two
That's the amazing thing, even in that Reds deal it was a two for two swap, same with the Twins it was an even deal all along.

Re: Rays Trade Ridgway; Get Two
Also included in the deal for the Rays is the left-handed hitting Fontaine, who was a second round pick of the Braves in 2006 out of Daytona Beach Community College. After walking on to Texas and not getting any playing time, he headed to Daytona and raked his way into the second round. A shortstop back then, he signed for $500,00 to walk away from a Florida commitment.
In 590 career minor league at-bats, the 22-year old has hit .280 with an outstanding on base percentage of .390. He has 103 walks in 177 games, and has done most of his damage in the South Atlantic League. Now that he's moved across the diamond to second, his range and arm now profile as average to a tick above. He hasn't displayed much power, only swatting 36 extra base hits as a professional. No doubt a useful piece, Fontaine will look to sure up a weaker spot in the Rays farm system.

Re: Rays Trade Ridgway; Get Two
Also Aybar may have some good motivating friends already on our team in either Guzman, Navarro, EJax or Ruggiano etc. If not then I would attach Carlos Pena to be his Big Brother mentor. Could Aybar be this years leading candidate for our Diamond in the Ruff?
