Murton Very Available
Per the Chicago Sun-Times, Matt Murton is officially not a part of the Cubs' plans. Today Lou Piniella named Mike Fontenot as the final player on the five man bench, ruling out the possibility of Murton making the roster and going on to say that the Cubs will try to get him a spot on a major league team.

The Rays, being in the market for an outfielder, would be doing themselves a big favor by acquiring Murton. He flat out hits and gets on base, with a career line of .296/.365/.455, developing power and good speed on the bases. Matt was originally drafted in 2003 in the first round by the Red Sox, and saw himself dealt to the Cubs during the four-team blockbuster in 2003 which sent Nomar Garciaparra to the Cubs and Orlando Cabrera to the Red Sox, among others.
Granted, the Rays were specifically looking for a switch-hitting center fielder, but I can't imagine that they could land one nearly as valuable as Murton.

And you may think they're poorly run, but they did go from last to first last year and are the favorites in their division. Sometimes spending money isn't wrong.

Re: Murton Very Available
Sorry to burst your bubble
But you guys obviously have never seen Murton play. Yes, he carries a decent AVG and has shown patience but the "power is developing" thing is laughable, he has average to below average speed and is a horrible base runner and to top it off, he is incredibly poor in the OF. If he plays RF, start the merry-go-round. He's MLB average in LF.
Point is, he's just an average MLB OF'er. The Cubs don't have plans for him because he's just not that good. Nothing more, nothing less. But is sure is funny how the grass is always greener. In this case, Murton and his red hair and not such.

Re: Murton Very Available
Murton will be a steal , but do our Rays have any win-now player the Cubs would desire? Or do the Rays need a player with splits (OPS wise) subpar to gomes, who can't play CF AT ALL and has about the same abilities as Gomes on corner D (subpar). I'd say this is a choice between giving Gomes 500+ ab's to prove himself or not.

Laughable
Now that comment is absurd. Murton is MLB-average or worse. Clearly he isn't above-average in anything he does on the baseball field. Cubs fans like him because he doesn't complain but quite frankly, he's not very good.

Re: Murton Very Available
I'm sure the Rays have enough to get him. The question is how much are we willing to sacrifice.

Re: Absolutely
I see Johnson as a 2B temporarily masquerading as a utility guy until Zobrist gets healthy. He has virtually no experience at the other positions. And his offensive numbers in Durham were ugly. Might be his only shot so he'll take it - I just don't think he can be counted on aside from 2B in the crunch.

Re: Murton Very Available
Is there any significance to the fact that all his offensive numbers have declined each year he has been in the majors?

Wow
Put the stats down and watch him play OF. He's just plain brutal. Terrible arm, terrible angles to the ball...all in all...a terrible OF. But since games are apparently played by using some ridiculous formula created by UZR, why even take the field?

That surprises me that the Cubs don't think Murton has the defensive tools to fill in at CF but Johnson does. I would have thought that Murton would have been the better CFer.

Re: Murton Very Available
I will grant that his OBP is significantly higher than Jonny's, and that is a very important consideration. But unlike Gomes, the bulk of his OBP is reliant on BA as he walks a decent % of the time, but not particularly often. Gomes on the other hand owes much of his OBP to his willingness to take a walk and he has significantly more power than Murton, an important consideration for a corner player. Should Murton come on board, Gomes's playing time would be cut back somewhat, and while Murton has been a part-time player so far, I think he might be wasted in that role-or that Gomes would be.
Essentially the question is how much better is Murton than Gomes.
Re: Murton Very Available
Also, although he doesn't walk quite as much as Gomes, (about 1.4% less) he doesn't strike out nearly as much as Jonny. .37 K/BB for Gomes while Murton's sitting at .71. Those are career numbers.
He's not really that comparable to Gomes because he's not a slugging type, but in the interest of our current outfield situation (Hinske starting in right makes me cringe a little) I think it's best to grab another talented outfielder for depth purposes, especially when it's someone who can start full-time like Murton.
Like Friedman has touched on, it's good to assemble as many quality players as possible regardless of need. This does happen to be an area of need, and I don't think we'd have to give up that much to get him.
Crazy
Whatever the "Fielding Bible" is, it just lost 100% of its credibility as anything other than frivolity by listing Murton in the top 50 of MLB LF'ers. Put the books down and watch baseball. He's horrible in the OF.
