7-2 Isn't Bad

Edwin Jackson and the defense didn't show up today; five errors by the Rays and four innings, seven hits, five earned runs, two walks, and no strikeouts is the final line for Edwin.

After that the Rays held the Reds hitless through the rest of the game, Dan Wheeler, Troy Percival, Chris Mason, and others also worked a scoreless inning each.

Brignac, Upton, and Hinske added runs for the Rays, but they fall short today 4-6.

Re: 7-2 Isn't Bad
Asked on game thread, but why 3 IP for Wheeler?

Re: 7-2 Isn't Bad
Is there really an urgency to get rid of Jackson or just utter frustration on the fans' part?

If by the All-Start break he's sporting a deceivingly good season (say 105 IP, 8-4, 4.40 despite the usual crap ratios), he'll be a valuable trading commodity ala Victor Zambrano. (They're not going to get another Kaz ofcourse). With the much improved defense, it think that's very possible.

What's the downside of keeping him?

Re: 7-2 Isn't Bad
That he becomes the constant weak point in an improved rotation and gives us less than half a chance to win every fifth day.

Re: 7-2 Isn't Bad
Yea, I guess the team wants to start winning as many games as possible. But then again, Niemann and Howell's chances of putting up a 5.50 ERA is in the same vicinity as Jackson's. ZIPS, for example, project Niemann for a 5.23 ERA.

The +/- between the available options for the 5th spot is only 2 wins at most. The benefits that will be reaped for a "good" Jakcson season are more plentiful. I admit I might just be thinking wishfully. :)

Re: 7-2 Isn't Bad
We really don't have a clear option for the fifth spot that looks the best.

Hammel - looks horrible
Howell - doesn't have the velocity
Jackson - not good
Niemann - not economic enough

Re: 7-2 Isn't Bad
Again, it is premature to make this judgment. As far as I know there is nothing in his minor league record to suggest it is true, there is no reason to assume it from his pitching style or intelligence and while true in 2007 was observed in too few innings to draw any conclusions.

If anything, given his reputed ability to adapt and the variety of his offerings, as well as his history of pitching deep into games, the more logical inference would be that he will improve with more experience.

Re: 7-2 Isn't Bad
At least you can count on two/three solid innings though Tyler, and with improved defense those numbers will likely drop.

On the bright side; we have three guys who nobody is overly concerned with to start the rotation, that's a first.

My question is...
Which Reds hitters got fined in Kangaroo Court for drawing walks????
