Jose Cruz Jr. has started his mid season funk a little earlier this year. I happen to disagree with Baseball Musings here where he backs Cruz's bat despite Jose's defense coming under fire. Yes, he went deep yesterday. However, his .216 batting average and his defense resembling Alex Sanchez makes this trade a winner for the Rays. Fossum is one the Rays best pitchers this year.
I was against the Cruz signing from day one as his career was simply in the decline. This year his back problems may be to cause for his even earlier decline. Look at his past 3 years, he always either tanks it in the second half or is not in good enough shape to handle it when the game takes a toll on the body.
