RAYS (2-1) at Cincinnati (2-2)
1:05; Ed Smith Stadium, Sarasota
Rays Radio/1250 AM

Pitching Matchup

RH Edwin Jackson, RH Brian Stokes, RH Carlos Hines, LH Wayne Franklin, RH Tim Corcoran, RH Shinji Mori

LH Phil Dumatrait

The Bottom Line

This game will be interesting for me, as I get my first look in person of Jackson, and Mori. So it will be interesting to see how Jackson fares, and Mori too. Also, depending on if the Rays go with some strange defensive alignment like they did yesterday, it will be interesting to see how new faces fare in new places. Plus, it's a good opportunity for me to head down to Ed Smith Stadium and see another spring park, as well as eat one of baseball's best concession items, the Big Red Smokey.

Question of the Day

Will Jackson, in his first game in a Devil Rays uniform, make progress toward his goal of the fifth starter's job? Or will he be the same Edwin Jackson who bombed in Los Angeles. He needs to get off to a good start today to even have a shot at that job, as many people are in the running for it. Today will go a long way in determining Jackson's role on the Rays to start the season.

Rays Lineup

Sorry, I'm going down to Sarasota to see the game, no lineup today

Upcoming Games

Monday-vs. Red Sox in St. Pete (Waechter, Harper, Miadich, Harville, Colome, Orvella)
Tuesday-vs. Phillies in St. Pete (Fossum)
Wednesday-at Phillies in Clearwater (Kazmir)

Well, I couldn't do the first three game previews, but I will start with today's game against Cincinnati in Sarasota. After beginning the spring season 2-0 with a couple of wins against Toronto, a six run inning led to the force of gravity kicking in and bringing the Rays back to earth in a loss yesterday. Today, they hit the road and go south over the Skyway to take on the Reds at Ed Smith Stadium. I will be going to the game, snapping photos all the way along (and devouring a mouthwatering Big Red Smokey in the process), but I will present to you my Game Preview first. The spring game previews will be shorter than the regular season ones, but will still have a decent amount of content sufficient for spring games. I don't know if I'll be able to do every last one like I did with the regular season ones, but I'll give it a shot.

Breakdown

The Rays send Edwin Jackson to the mound to make his Tampa Bay debut, at least for two innings or so. It will be interesting to see what kind of stuff he has and how he fares, and like I mention below, it will be important for him to do well in his quest for the fifth starter's job. Following him are two Biscuits alumni, Carlos Hines and Brian Stokes, largely there just to get a feel for the competition, non-roster invitee Wayne Franklin follows them, the only lefthander on the Rays side scheduled, and Tim Corcoran and Shinji Mori round out the Rays' probables. You can bet on each pitcher going 1-3 innings, and performance, of course, can affect the timetable. Taking the mound for the Reds in lefty Phil Dumatrait.
