Rays Release Witasick, Claim Snelling

The Rays made a move today! Releasing Jay Witasick and claiming Chris Snelling off waivers from the Oakland Athletics. Snelling is a power lefty who walks, he's only 25, but often injured. In 89 major league games Snelling has hit .240/.357/.380 with six homeruns. In 493 minor league games his numbers are considerably more impressive; .311/.385/.472 and 46 homeruns. You hate to speculate about a move like this since at this point it seems minor, but Snelling -- if he sticks -- could be in close consideration for a bench job next spring, he doesn't have much defensive value but I'd say he's better than Jonny Gomes. Bottom line the guy has a line of injury problems however if he's healthy he can destroy the baseball.

One last stat, Snelling's career P/PA is 4.01, Carlos Pena's is 3.95, Kevin Youkilis' is 4.48 just to give you an idea on his plate approach.
