Making the first of several roster moves, the Rays have called up OF Fernando Perez from Triple-A and optioned reliever Juan Salas to Double-A.
Perez is a plus defender with good speed (and brains!) this season in Durham he has a 13.5 LD% and 60.9 GB%. His BABIP was over .400, so I'm not sure his numbers will carry over quite as well especially considering his 30 K% and 10.2 BB%. As much as I like Perez' story I can't see him being overly effective in the majors as anything but a pinch runner/defensive sub.
John Jaso will also be called up before Tuesday's game. He has an excellent BB/K ratio this season: 72 walks to 47 strikeouts. Between Montgomery and Durham Jaso has a 17.2 LD% and a .285 BABIP. He seems like a far safer player in terms of expecting offensive production than Perez. The question marks about his defensve have faded over this season.
Per Lancaster Percival and Salas will rejoin the team on Tuesday, wrapping up the first wave of expansion.
